00:00all right drs now we focus on nba free agency early on here in the week leading into fourth
00:06of july always a free agency summer around the association but as we shared when free agency
00:13began at 6 p.m eastern time on monday not many moves that really moved the needle all that much
00:20some significant contributions but even of the top five six or seven signings that we saw from a free
00:27agency perspective probably one starter in the fold no superstars no real all-stars but the top
00:35free agent in the market by basically consensus feel miles turner in indiana of course was going
00:42to garner a big payday for his role with the pacers leading them to a second consecutive eastern
00:48conference finals first nba finals appearance and of course a seventh game since the year 2000
00:54and we wondered drs would miles turner the longest tenured pacer who had spent the entirety of his
01:0110 seasons in the nba in indiana would the pacers fork up enough cash to keep him around the answer
01:09no as miles turner provides the first stunner of nba free agency he signs a four-year 107 million
01:19dollar deal to head to the milwaukee bucks yeah i don't think it changes anything for me with the
01:24bucks like oh now put them back into contention they'll be solid as long as yannis is there because
01:28he's an mvp candidate every single year we'll get to the damian lillard stuff but if we just focus here
01:33look it's a stretch big like if you lose brooke lopez if you watch him ever play basketball he's good
01:38at shooting the three-point shot can give you stuff down low and certainly be a big man same thing with
01:41miles turner he's just younger and better version of him right now because you look at last year
01:46you know you shoot 48 percent from the floor but how about this 39 and a half percent from three-point
01:51range that's what you need you need bigs that can sort of stretch the floor and give yannis that
01:55you know advantage to drive to the rim you don't want a big that's camped out under the basket and
01:59clogging the lane he provides a lot of really good defense a lot of three-point shooting and again
02:03younger than brooke lopez it is a good match i just don't think it moves the needle but as we talked
02:08about to open the show when yannis andacupo was saying we're not just going to sit here this year and say
02:13oh dame's down let's just take a pause year because i'd rather go try to chase a championship
02:17so at least they're being honest and saying we're going to make this team better is it championship
02:21where are the honest that's going to be up to you but here's where we're going to extend the payroll
02:25here by making a couple moves and getting a key piece for your future to see if you can act on that next
02:30year i think it makes the bucks better of course knowing the situation around damian lillard even
02:36entering yesterday with the ruptured achilles and probably missing the entirety of this next season
02:41how much better and is yannis pleased with the move that we'll discuss in just a second but drs before
02:48we focus on milwaukee and the other maneuver the bucks pulled off yesterday to clear the cap space
02:53necessary to pay turner 26.8 million dollars per year of course we focus on the ending of his time
03:02in indiana drafted 11th overall back in 2015 spent the entirety of his decade in the association
03:09with this pacers franchise the longest tenured pacer at that and donnie this was a guy that was
03:15basically rumored to be traded 15 times in his 10 years in indiana and after bringing the pacers to
03:22new heights in recent memory the conversation was as rick carlisle told us throughout that magical
03:28playoff run our number one offseason priority is bringing back miles turner but when tyrese
03:35taliburton gets injured early on in game seven set to miss all of 2025 26 would indiana's ownership
03:42be willing to pay into the luxury tax to bring back turner some disputing reports yesterday how much
03:49turner was offered per year 20 million dollars no closer to 25 million dollars per season it did
03:56not match that of milwaukee and ultimately turner heads to the bucks yeah it's interesting to see how
04:03we'd like to see how it actually played out ben with the statistics coming back because
04:07like they wanted to keep him they probably going to do everything they could to keep him but was an
04:11extra couple million dollars worth it to him just to leave and go to milwaukee because sometimes you're
04:15around the fellas and i'm not saying you're supposed to take less because that's never what anybody does
04:19like you take less sometimes you have so much money but this was a chance to cash in i guess he feels
04:23like the fit might be better milwaukee which is interesting because that was a team that was really
04:28well-rounded and put together and a lot of fun it's just a shame that halliburton got injured
04:32halliburton does get injured he's probably still a pacer right no doubt about it i think he's
04:37probably still a pacer and there would be little doubt in my mind that indiana would be booked as the
04:41favorite to win the eastern conference crown once again so how is milwaukee paying miles turner all of
04:48this money we'll tell you up next so miles turner rather shockingly is now a member of the
04:55milwaukee bucks four-year 107 million dollar deal that is 26.8 million dollars per season
05:02of annual average value quite a big payday for turner the indiana pacers by reports unable to match
05:09because they didn't really want to bet uh get into that luxury tax area but how did milwaukee drs when
05:16their season came to a close in only five games in the opening round for a second consecutive year
05:21against those pacers have the money to do this of course our conversation was would that fifth game
05:27in indianapolis be honest his final in a bucks uniform what would the bucks do with damian lillard
05:34tearing his achilles throughout that series and of course not a ton of future assets for the bucks
05:40not many draft picks not a ton of money to spend elsewhere in the roster so how can they afford
05:46turner well enter the bucks front office as they are now waiving damian lillard who is still owed
05:53113 million dollars over the final two years of his contract and they are now stretching that remaining
06:01value over the next five seasons so they will still owe dame about 22 and a half million dollars per year
06:09but instead of only two years to pay out 113 million dollars in that lump sum drs they will stretch
06:16it over five it is the longest stretch we have seen in nba history for the richest amount of value
06:23stretched out over a certain amount of time the bucks cut dame lillard to make way for miles turner
06:30yeah i guess it's like the new bobby bonita like hey every year celebrate the milwaukee bucks paying
06:35dame lillard who's playing on another basketball team and maybe even retired at that point extra money
06:40here it is interesting because you know a couple of nba execs saying this could be like a reckless move
06:44because understand this like yes they're sort of circumventing things but five years of 25 million
06:49dollars when that apron you know you're going to be up against and say how do we get below it well we
06:53can't because we can't even move this guy we automatically have an extra 25 million dollars and
06:58understand this as well like i like organizations that certainly enter into the season saying we're
07:03going to do everything we can to win but sometimes they get a little bit jaded and say is this a move
07:08that for right now you had to make because you feel like you can get over the hump because for me i don't
07:12think that's the case with the milwaukee bucks did they make their team better yes they did but at
07:16what cost right and also was it the fact that they didn't want to wait for dame and say janice would
07:20get upset and then we have to wait another year and then we'll tack on with another great basketball
07:24player because they probably couldn't afford it to go both ways you had to cut one to lose one to gain
07:29one and i don't know what the difference is going to be but let's just see over the next couple years
07:33if then the rest of the mba goes like see that move they made that really hurt or how about this
07:38the milwaukee bucks make a run to the nba finals and the rest league goes we're about to copycat
07:43this thing like the sixes with paul george get out of town we'll stretch this out over five or six
07:47years and we'll get another player here to help us out while you're playing for maybe somebody else
07:51drs we see this in the national football league even when you trade a player that has a ton of value
07:57in his contract or release them there are dead cap hits that you still need to pay out that contract
08:02we do not normally see this as it is a historic wave and stretch in nba history and we certainly
08:10have not seen it for the tune of 113 million dollars paid out over five years does it free up
08:17some financial flexibility perhaps in the salary cap for milwaukee season to season sure but you still
08:24have to pay dame a ton so if you think about it drs again just on average 22 and a half million
08:30dollars for dame over the next five years a four-year 107 million dollar deal for miles turner
08:37that's an average of 26.8 million dollars basically 50 million dollars for miles turner because damian
08:45lillard is no longer on the team with the bucks and i like miles turner is he worth 50 mil per year
08:53probably not again 10 years in indiana average a little bit more than 14 points per game throughout
08:59that time this past season getting the pacers to a seventh game of the nba finals 15.6 points per game
09:06six and a half boards but really this is what he presents for a championship team or even for a
09:12playoff contender he is a big man that can scratch the floor shoot the three 39.6 percent from deep
09:18a season ago and defend the rim pretty well as well two point uh two blocks per game last season drs
09:27that's what he provides for milwaukee so you added miles turner in the front court alongside yannis
09:34dame was not going to be there of course as he recovers from an achilles injury now no longer
09:39a part of the franchise does this make milwaukee in the up in the air uncertain eastern conference
09:45one of the four or five best priced teams to win that conference crown no it's 21 to one on
09:52milwaukee to win the east that is eighth best it is 65 to one for the bucks to win an nba championship
09:58again eighth best for a team out of the eastern conference it was 95 to one post draft last week
10:07before the acquisition of miles turner and the releasing of damian lillard so it has dropped by 30
10:13bucks but it's still a long price drs at 65 to one so the question might be is all of this worth it
10:20no it's not worth it like and i guess it's might be just worth it because you have a superstar and a
10:26global superstar in yannis you're in milwaukee it's not exactly a destination city where all superstars
10:31want to wind up being there so you want to keep that one superstar happy and in town as long as possible
10:36because you have to understand this too guys right the nba is a business and business is good for
10:42your home fan base when yannis is happy and playing well you'll sell out that arena you'll sell a ton
10:48of merchandise because there's two options here that you can have all right let's like get some
10:52clarity we're not going to win this thing let's move yannis let's restock everything the fan base
10:57won't be happy with that at that point here and who knows if even restocking it is going to work and
11:01the turn into your favor in four to five years yannis said if i'm going to stay here you better show me
11:07your commitment milwaukee is showing that commitment whether that means a championship and as we said
11:11we don't think it is but now yannis can't say well i went out anyway hey look what we just did for you
11:17you know we cut damian lillard basically to get another player in here because damian lillard wasn't
11:21going to be here they are showing signs of the commitment there to yannis and i think that's what
11:25he and the franchise care about the most but by reports yesterday drs from mea insider chris haynes
11:32yannis wasn't too pleased with the handling of damian lillard who you mentioned at the very start
11:37of the show who's the big winner in all of this is it milwaukee it's certainly not indiana is it
11:42miles turner for getting paid is it yannis it's dame who now makes 22 and a half million dollars
11:48this season to rehab his injured achilles and it was pretty clear he didn't love being in milwaukee
11:54his family did not live in milwaukee with him throughout the nba season he might have left milwaukee
12:00even before the move to acquire miles turner he gets paid a ton of money to rehab and once he
12:07clears waivers the rs can basically pick at this stage of his career where he wants to go whether
12:14that's this summer or he waits to see how 2025 26 shakes out and finds his next destination for the
12:21following nba season yeah by the way there has to be a stipulation also i'm pretty sure that he just
12:26can't go back to the bucks after like a year or at the end of the year if he looks hey you know
12:30am i i'm ready to go let me come back for a vet minimum exception here where you can stretch it
12:34out which the friso's telling me the producer's telling me yes we can which that wouldn't make
12:38any sense by the way that would be ultra devious he cannot okay that's what i thought yeah because
12:43otherwise then we'd have to put a cba would just come to a crashing halt where everybody would do this
12:47and bring players back at a cheap discount spread out over a longer period of terms here that can't
12:52happen so we'll see what happens but you're right like dame's gonna be able to rehab he'll be back in
12:56the nba do we think he's going to be back to dame time in the past probably not but everything is
13:02according to a contract if he can come back and help a team at 10 million dollars a year as opposed
13:05to 50 million dollars a year as he says you know what let me go ring chase or say hey why not man
13:10go for it dame 13 years in the nba for damian lillard he is 34 years old he turns 35 in just a few
13:19weeks on july 15th the previous two years in milwaukee still an all-star still averaged better
13:25than 24 points per game but i would say the dame and janice experiment inside the pfizer forum drs
13:32was a massive failure milwaukee did win the nba cup cool a title hang it from the rafters but they
13:39lost in the first round ironically enough each of the previous two seasons to the indiana pacers so
13:47we'll see where dame wants to go to play out the remainder perhaps of his nba career more nba moves
13:53from tuesday in free agency on this wednesday on the early line not nearly as significant as the
14:00miles turner damian lillard situation in milwaukee but we'll break them down for you and then a recap
14:07of the commissioner's job in the wnba all that next so miles turner signing with the milwaukee bucks
14:12the biggest move so far of nba free agency and certainly the most significant move that we saw
14:18on day number two tuesday a couple of other moves drs yakub purdle another big man four year 104 million
14:25dollar deal to remain in toronto purdle getting 104 million dollars good for yakub man duncan robinson in
14:34a sign in trade headed from miami back to detroit three year 48 million dollar deal i say back to
14:42detroit he played his college basketball at michigan how about your two newest pistons karis lavert
14:48duncan robinson both repping the maze and blue back now in the motor city tim hardaway jr
14:54leaves detroit he is headed to denver to add to this nugget side that has had a great 48 hour run
15:00that also led to a trade yesterday for yonas valentunas the veteran big man adding some of
15:06that depth as well trey man a three-year 24 million dollar deal and heartbreak for drs and his
15:13philadelphia 76ers where sean yabu sally of course one of the heroes of the french national team during
15:20the summer summer olympic games last summer leaves philadelphia signs a two-year 12 million dollar deal
15:27with the new york knicks yeah probably sign with the knicks because tibbs wasn't there like wait a
15:31second i'm a bench player in new york i'll probably get one minute for the entire season once tibbs
15:35goes like you know what that could be a good spot where i might actually be able to get into a ball
15:39game by the way of yakup hurdle like what's the exchange rate here like you know we do like hey if
15:42you sign in florida and texas versus new york like is that a good deal in toronto and is it canadian
15:48what what is it canadian dollars like what's the exchange there like what do they call it are they
15:54what the blooms what do they have here is is shams tweeting out right is that the american dollar
15:59yesterday on canada day was that the canadian dollar i think we need somebody to explain that
16:05by the way what is the canadian dollar though like what is that what it's called the canadian dollar
16:09yeah u.s dollar to canadian dollar is that what it's like cad it's one one u.s dollar right now drs
16:19is the equivalent in the current exchange rate of 1.37 canadian dollars so we get value in the dollar
16:27value when we go up north is that correct is that what i'm reading correctly that deal that deal in
16:31toronto yesterday when he inked the bottom line that's a that's a lot more than 104 million dollars
16:38i'll tell you that much did any of these moves impact the nba championship odds not really the
16:44oklahoma city thunder still that incredibly short favorite a plus 250 the new york knicks and the
16:49cleveland cavaliers now tied for the best price out of the eastern conference at eight to one the
16:55calves dropped to 10 to one after letting go of ty jerome on monday night the houston rockets now back
17:01in front of the denver nuggets for that second best price around the western conference a plus 850
17:07but i think denver has had a great start to this offseason and the acquisition of cam johnson freeing
17:14up a ton of cap space and letting go of michael porter jr bringing back a fan favorite and a
17:19utility guy in bruce brown and i do like the addition of a shooter and tim hardaway jr
17:24surrounding nicole yokich i think it's been a good free agency period drs for the nuts
17:29yeah it has and also you just want to make those minor changes to get some more extra energy in that
17:34lineup i think they've done that and also next year as long as you have your big guys healthy
17:37which we've talked about on the show you'll be just fine by the way doing some digging here ben while
17:41you were like astutely going over these contracts a dollar coin in canada is a loonie and a
17:47two dollar coin is a toonie and last time i heard toonie was what the town movie the town like
17:52ah she's a toonie you know what i mean loonie toon that whoa yeah that is that canadian nature
17:59i've heard of a loonie toonie there are cops that's the coins there yeah on a horseback i think i like
18:06the mountain you know what i mean by the way the mounties that only like in the in like the like
18:11british columbia like are they all like do they just roam the streets of toronto like you you know what i
18:15mean like on horseback is that just like a separate entity i think just like ottawa and
18:20winnipeg that is super cold newfoundland maybe calgary edmonton yeah we'll ask joe madden in that
18:25area yeah yeah we will okay what we joe madden nhl free agency what exactly is a mountie and where
18:32do they reside just one more bit around the nba before we get to the commissioner's cup
18:37in the w jaron jackson jr now going to have off-season surgery on a turf toe injury that
18:44happened somewhere off-site and away from the facility it's kind of a tough look after signing
18:50a five-year 240 million dollar max extension contract as free agency began on monday
18:59now we'll see that guy now what late february now the nba players man they got it made i'm telling you
19:03like don't disclose the injury sign the big contract miss time but still get a guaranteed contract
19:08contract all in the day's work man love to see it
