We look forward to the unmissable acts at this year's TRNSMT.

00:00Welcome to the first episode of Old City New Dreams. I'm Kyle McCormick. I'm here with
00:10Debra McConville in the clubhouse in Princes Square. This afternoon we're going to be talking
00:16all about Transmit. All things Transmit is a month away. Can you believe it's been a
00:19year since the last one already? No, I cannot. I was there, Liam Gallacher,
00:24on the Friday night. Liam Gallacher, who will obviously be heading to Murrayfield, sadly
00:28not Hampton Park for an Oasis reunion in August. It was a good festival last year and I'm
00:35looking forward to talking about it this year because it almost seems as if it's cleaned
00:38up, it's cooped up in us. I remember Headlaners came out back in November I think it was and
00:45here we are in the middle of summer about to talk about another brand new. Perfect, and
00:49that leads us nicely into the Friday. Who are you looking forward to in the Friday, Declan?
00:53I think obviously the big one that stands out for a lot of people is 50 Cent.
00:56I remember when he played the Hydro, I wasn't there, but it was a lot of chat after the
01:02gink and that this was almost like a resurgence of 50 Cent. He's obviously been about for a
01:07wee while, but immediately when this headliner came out, a lot of people got excited and pretty
01:15cool that he's going to be the main stage at Transmit on the Friday I think.
01:19The really disappointing thing is I can remember in 2005 when there was Hyperbottom coming to
01:24play the SECC. So that's how old I am. Now, there's a few kind of resurgent ones. The
01:30other one for me is Wetleg coming back. It's been three years since I think that first album
01:35came out.
01:36Wetleg of course, who played McCools just as they were starting out, just up the road there.
01:40So it'll be a pretty interesting day for them on the Friday. Their new album Moisturiser
01:44comes out on the Friday, so they'll be launching that new album and I'd imagine you'd hear a
01:49few new tunes from that one. The other one I'm looking forward to is Confidence Man. A few
01:52people were down at the BBC Big Weekend in Liverpool, that was two or three weeks ago, and said that
01:58their set was absolutely out of this world. So they're one that I'm really looking forward
02:01to at Transmit on the Friday. Is there anything else you're looking forward to on the Friday?
02:05No, much the same. Confidence Man. My cousin's a big fan of theirs, and obviously there's
02:10a Glasgow connection. We've got Twin Atlantic playing on the Friday, who by all sense and
02:15purposes I'm told are a really good live band, so I'll probably want to check out. But certainly
02:19I think 50 Cent being that main headliner on the Friday's going to really kick off a good
02:25weekend of live music in Glasgow Green.
02:27And then leading nicely into the Saturday, the big one there, Fontaines DC. Do you think
02:31that's will be the last time that we see them as maybe being the second headliner?
02:35Yeah, I think it will be. I mean, I certainly thought they were going to be one of the top
02:40kiddies at this festival. Just after they sold out the Hydro at the start of December, they're
02:46abandoning up. There's no question about that. You only need to look at the outdoor gigs that
02:51they're doing across Europe and in London and whatnot. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if
02:56we're having this conversation in two years' time in Fontaines DC are top of the bill at
03:01Transbett. But that's nothing against Biffey Clydell, who are rightfully at the top of the
03:07bill. I think this will be the first time they're back at the festival since they headlined
03:11it. It was the very first festival, is that right?
03:13I think it was one of the first ones, I think. 2017. But also, they're an interesting one.
03:18Just played a secret set at SWG3. Seems to be new music on the way. Could be a band of
03:25year for them. They seem to be a band as well. I remember you and I in a conversation when
03:30they played those, was it three nights they played at the Barrowlands and they were going
03:34back to their first three albums. So they're probably a band who, you know, it's very easy
03:39to forget. You know, I still think Biffey Clydell is a fairly kind of newish band. But, you
03:45know, there was a band that I got into before the Revolutions. But of course, you only need
03:50to go back, I think it's 2005 or 2006 when the first album comes out. So, you know, they've
03:54been about for a long time. After 20 years, what is this new music going to sound like? Do
03:59those nights at the Barrowlands? Are they reminiscing a wee bit in the past and maybe looking to
04:04take it in another direction? But certainly, if they're set at this transmit, as good as
04:09it was in 2017, I think people are in for a real treat, the Biffey Clydell.
04:13Excellent. And there's some other interesting bands in there. Underworld, isn't it? I think
04:18they're headlining the King Tut's tent as well. That should be absolutely
04:22monumentous. Well, I went to see Iggy Pop last week at the O2 Academy and, what I've
04:28said, the Scottish, you love Trainspotting. Everybody loves Trainspotting. And we're
04:32a bit cheeky about it in the sense that a lot of the scenes in Trainspotting were obviously
04:35filmed here in Glasgow, even though it is better than Edinburgh. But to hear, you know, the
04:44big Underworld tune at transmit, I think it's going to be a pretty special transmit moment.
04:48I certainly felt that when I went to see Iggy Pop doing Lust for Life and, you know,
04:54right away, standing at the O2 Academy, I'd kind of image a Ewan McGregor running the
04:59Princess Street in my head. So, when you hear about Underworld, it might evoke some memories
05:05of Trainspotting, I think, for people of a certain vintage. Excellent. And then on to
05:09the Sunday, there's actually quite a good Scottish contingent on the Sunday. Yeah, just
05:12actually to go back to the Saturdays, we've got the Healer as well, we're a band that,
05:15you know, obviously everybody knows it's Bono's son, is the lead singer, but they're a band
05:21who I think recently sold out to the O2 Academy. They're certainly getting a lot of interest.
05:25The Cooks, an old faithful who'll be a decent festival band. Jake Bunk, another one I don't
05:31think he's ever played Transmit. He's somebody who I've liked since I was, you know, 12, 13 years
05:36of age. I think he'll be a decent one. Another band I think to really mention is Wunderhorse.
05:41Wunderhorse, I don't know, what is the correct pronunciation? Let's go for Wunderhorse. I know
05:47obviously we've got Wunderbarb on the road there, but they, if people don't know, they
05:51supported Sam Fender recently. I think when Fender cancelled his concert here in Glasgow,
05:57they took a gig to the SWG3, which basically sold out immediately. They're abandoning up.
06:02They're abandoning up. And again, there's kind of low down on this card, but don't be surprised
06:07if they return in a couple of years to be one of the bigger names in the bill. And again,
06:12we've got a couple of other Glasgow bands, and Lucia and the Best Boys, and Bro Thiel
06:17as well, who have to look out for. They're just off the back of SWG3. I went to see them
06:22at Transnot last year and they were tremendous. So I think they're two worth looking out for
06:27as well, if you're into your Glasgow music. Excellent. And then if we move on to Sunday,
06:33Headliners are Snow Patrol. They released their first album in six years at the end of last
06:38year. It brought, by all accounts, a bit of a banger. Right, okay.
06:42They're not a band. I mean, you know, I must confess, me and you're talking here about bands
06:48that we like as well. Snow Patrol are not really my cup of tea, but I know for people
06:53who are fans of them, they'll go along, it'll be quite a nostalgic kind of gig, and you'll
06:58hear all the tunes that you might like from Snow Patrol. But the one that can interest me
07:04the most is Gracie Abrahams, you know, big gig at the Hydro. I'm unsure if she sold it out,
07:11but if she didn't sell it out, it was pretty close to a sell-out. She's a big name. And
07:16again, I know there's been a lot of kind of criticism towards Transnot in recent years
07:21about female representation at the festival, but there's a good, you know, couple of names
07:27in there for female and Glasgow acts on the Sunday. We were talking about that kind
07:30of on the way here. You've got Brooke Colm, Rhiann Downey, Nia Nisbet's there as well.
07:35Rhiann Downey obviously played last year as well. Was it last year that shows
07:39of the beautiful South the year before? Yeah, I think so. Yep. So I think that's,
07:43it's for sure it's gone in the right direction. Like I said, there's a good Scottish contingent.
07:46Kel Fulton down the bottom there as well. Kel Fulton, another name for the, I was going to say
07:49blast from the past, but he's, to be fair, he's kind of... He's reinvented himself as a solo
07:53at this time? He has. I think he played Strip Joint at the end,
07:58the start of this year, on his solo tour. I think, yeah. He's doing some really interesting
08:02stuff out in, out in Spain just now with songwriting, songwriting retreats I suppose
08:08you would call them, which are pretty interesting.
08:10You were my first ever gig at the O2 Academy, so... Really? What's the memories of that?
08:14Same genes, I mean, I think I was, I don't know, I just advanced that I've been there,
08:18I think I was only 12, and I think the age limit might have been 13,
08:21so then I went to the O2 Academy, I followed these, but... Yeah, I was up the stair,
08:25obviously, kind of now, if I'm good at the O2 Academy, I usually try and go down the stair,
08:31but aye, it's a pretty good gig, I mean, you know, they were a basic live band,
08:35and it was not a bad introduction to live music, put it that way.
08:38They're obviously one of the bands that was kind of synonymous with Tear in the Park as well.
08:42I remember going in 2013, I think it was, and they were the secret band,
08:48the Dry Burr Soul band, and absolutely tore the roof up.
08:51Do you think we'll get any surprises at Trans, but this year, obviously, last year,
08:54we had Travis turn out, I don't know where, on the Friday, and play a secret set.
08:58It's one of those ones where I wouldn't really know who the surprise would be,
09:01but I wouldn't have put it past them, thought it would be a surprise, I suppose.
09:05The contribution might be you, do you think?
09:07Who are you?
09:08I'm unsure.
09:09You know, probably Biffy Cloud on top of the will on a Saturday,
09:13you could be saying they might appear somewhere, but you don't know who's going to turn up,
09:18which is, you know, an exciting thing to think about.
09:22The beauty of Trans.
09:23It's going to be a good festival, and I think we'll be back again to talk all about it in the aftermath.
09:30Perfect. Well, thank you very much, Declan, and thank you everybody for tuning in to the first episode of Old City New Dreams.
09:39I thought we'd do a Bella Houston gig today as well.
09:43It's just waiting while we're here.
09:45Who's going at Bella Houston?
