00:00Saint-Martinien is a name that can evoke several Christian figures,

00:06but on July 2, the church mainly celebrates Saint Martinian of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus,

00:14a character as mysterious as he is fascinating.

00:18We are in the 3rd century, in Asia Minor, in the city of Ephesus.

00:24The Emperor of Esse, fiercely opposed to the Christians,

00:27triggers brutal persecution.

00:31In this context of fear and threatened faith,

00:35Seven young men decide to flee rather than deny Christ.

00:41Among them is Martignanus, or Martignan.

00:47They find refuge in a cave on the heights of the city,

00:51where they pray, fast and place their fate in God's hands.

00:56But the authorities discover them.

01:01Rather than execute them,

01:03the emperor ripens the entrance to the cave,

01:07condemning them to die of hunger.

01:10What he doesn't know is that these young people are not going to die,

01:15not right away, at least.

01:18According to tradition,

01:19God miraculously puts them into a supernatural sleep.

01:26This sleep will last more than two centuries.

01:30It was only in the eighth century,

01:32during the reign of the Christian Emperor Theodosius II,
