00:00According to the head of the largest hospital in the territory, an Israeli airstrike that
00:11struck a cafe near the port in Gaza City has resulted in the deaths of more than 40 people.
00:18Dr. Mohamed Abu Silmiya, the director of Al Shifa Hospital, said in an update on Monday
00:24night that at least 41 people had been killed and 75 injured in the strike. Videos geolocated show
00:32thick smoke rising from the scene, as well as widespread damage to the cafe and the surrounding
00:38area. They also showed bodies being removed on stretchers. Media informed by the Israel Defense
00:45Forces that the incident is under review. Prior to the strike, steps were taken to mitigate the
00:51risk of harming civilians using aerial surveillance. Students, journalists and remote workers all
00:58frequented the Al Baca Cafe because it provided access to the internet and a workspace close to
01:04the Mediterranean Sea. One of those killed was 17-year-old Sama Abu Namas, who was in the cafe
01:11to study. Schools have been suspended in Gaza for almost two years, but she was preparing for a
01:18possible return of secondary level exams, her family said. She was studying for her high school exam
01:24and was heading home after. We suddenly find out she's killed. Children are dying every day.
01:32What are we negotiating over? The blood of our children? Said the teenager's aunt. According to
01:38Silmiya, most of the casualties are women and children. Many of the victims were students seeking
01:45internet access at the cafe. Said Ahel, the cafe's general manager. The airstrike killed 11 employees
01:52and injured five other staff members. He stated that the venue was hosting a birthday party at the
01:59time of the impact. The establishment was founded 20 years ago, Ahel said, and, after a period of closure,
02:07reopened its doors earlier this year. We wanted to go back in business to provide for the residents of
02:13Gaza to vent and for those seeking education and don't have electricity and internet, he said.
02:20Silmiya also said the hospital was short of ICU beds and anesthetics to treat the casualties.
02:27The death toll increased Monday night, after some people died from their injuries. The hospital
02:33director continued, We are treating the injured on the hospital floor because there are no rooms or
02:39hospital beds available. Ismail Abu-Hatab, a freelance journalist, was among those killed,
02:46according to other journalists at the scene. The Hamas-controlled government media office said
02:51his death brought to 228 the number of journalists killed by Israeli military action in Gaza since October
02:592023.
