Important Points of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA) Second Caliph of Islam He was the second Caliph after Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) and ruled for about 10 years with justice and strength.
Title – Al-Farooq Prophet Muhammad (SAW) gave him the title Al-Farooq, meaning “the one who distinguishes between right and wrong.”
Acceptance of Islam His acceptance of Islam strengthened Muslims. Before him, Muslims used to pray secretly, but after his conversion, they prayed openly.
Strong and Brave Leader He was known for his bravery, strictness for justice, and fear of Allah in all decisions.
Expansion of Islamic State During his caliphate, Islamic rule expanded rapidly to regions including Persia, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, and Jerusalem.
Excellent Administrator He established a proper administrative system, courts, police, salaries for soldiers, welfare for poor and needy, and the Islamic calendar (Hijri).
Simplicity and Humility Despite being a ruler of a vast empire, he lived a very simple and humble life, wearing patched clothes and eating simple food.
Justice for All He was so just that even non-Muslims respected him. His famous saying: “Even if a dog dies hungry near the river Euphrates, I will be responsible before Allah.”
Martyrdom He was martyred while leading Fajr prayer by Abu Lulu, a Persian slave. He is buried beside Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) in Masjid-e-Nabawi.
Knowledge and Wisdom He was among the most knowledgeable Sahaba. Many verses of the Quran were revealed agreeing with his opinions (e.g. regarding hijab, prisoners of Badr).
