Sen. Bernie Sanders strongly opposes President Trump’s so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill,” calling it the most dangerous legislation in modern U.S. history. Sanders claims the bill is a billionaire-funded payoff that gives $975 billion in tax breaks to the top 1%, while slashing $1.1 trillion from healthcare programs like Medicaid and ACA—potentially leaving 16 million uninsured. With studies predicting 50,000 avoidable deaths per year, Sanders calls the bill a "death sentence" for working-class Americans and a devastating blow to rural hospitals already on the brink.

00:00Thanks very much for joining me.
00:02Let me be very clear.
00:05Trump's so-called big, beautiful bill, now on the floor of the Senate,
00:10is one of the most dangerous pieces of legislation
00:14ever brought forth in the modern history of our country.
00:18It is a gift to the billionaire class
00:21while causing massive pain for working families.
00:26Thanks very much for joining me.
00:28Let me be very clear.
00:32Trump's so-called big, beautiful bill, now on the floor of the Senate,
00:36is one of the most dangerous pieces of legislation
00:40ever brought forth in the modern history of our country.
00:45It is a gift to the billionaire class
00:47while causing massive pain for working families.
00:52Actually, I'm wrong.
00:53I shouldn't use the word gift because the billionaires paid for it.
00:58This bill is an absolute reflection of a corrupt campaign finance system.
01:04The billionaires invest hundreds of millions of dollars in candidates and in elections.
01:10And in this bill, this piece of legislation, their investment is paying off.
01:16So, what are they getting?
01:19Well, the top 1% is receiving $975 billion in tax breaks.
01:26Further, and this is really quite unbelievable,
01:29the wealthiest two-tenths of 1% receive a $211 billion estate tax break.
01:39$211 billion for the top two-tenths of 1%.
01:45In that provision, 99.8% of Americans get zero.
01:50Further, large corporations in this bill get a $918 billion tax break.
01:58That is what the 1% and the wealthy campaign contributors get.
02:04So, here's what you get, assuming you're not a billionaire.
02:09This bill throws over 16 million people off of the health insurance they have
02:15by slashing Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act by over $1.1 trillion.
02:22So, $1 trillion in tax breaks for the 1%, $1 trillion in cuts in Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
02:33Further, it forces millions of Medicaid recipients to pay a $35 copayment every time they visit a doctor.
02:41So, what is the impact of all this?
02:43What happens when you throw 16 million people off health care, you impose a $35 copayment?
02:50Well, what the Yale School of Public Health and the University of Pennsylvania estimate
02:56is that if this reconciliation bill is enacted, and it's unbelievable for me to say this,
03:03but this is what they are telling us, this is what they have studied.
03:06If this bill goes through and all these health care cuts take place,
03:10over 50,000 Americans will die unnecessarily each and every year.
03:1850,000 Americans. In other words, this bill is a horrific death sentence,
03:25a death sentence for low-income and working-class Americans.
03:31Further, if this legislation is enacted, rural hospitals all over the country that are already
03:37struggling would be forced to shut down.
03:39In other words, this legislation is the most significant attack on the health care needs of
03:53the American people in the modern history of our country.
03:56So, our health care system is broken, it's dysfunctional, and they make it even worse.
04:02And that's not all. This bill wipes out nutrition assistance for millions of hungry kids
04:09at a time when we have the highest rate of childhood poverty of nearly any major nation on Earth.
04:16This bill will also make it much harder for working-class kids to receive the higher education they need
04:22by cutting education by some $350 billion.
04:27At a time when the planet is struggling with climate change, heat waves now all over the world,
04:33this bill decimates investment in energy efficiency and sustainable energies like wind and solar.
04:39So, if you are concerned about how the United States keeps getting into never-ending wars,
04:47this bill makes a bad situation even worse by handing out another $150 billion to the Pentagon,
04:57a 15% increase in an already bloated Pentagon budget.
05:04Now, I want to applaud all of the Democrats, every single one of them,
05:08who strongly oppose this bill. And I want to congratulate two Republicans,
05:14Senators Paul and Senator Tillis, for voting with the Democrats in opposition to proceeding on this bill.
05:21But here is something really interesting and quite telling about where the Republican Party is today.
05:29When Senator Tillis of North Carolina indicated that he would vote against the bill,
05:35he was lambasted on social media by Trump and he was threatened with a primary.
05:43He actually did not do what Trump wanted him to do. Is there anything in this world that is worse than that?
05:52Today, Senator Tillis announced that he would not seek re-election.
05:57So, it is pretty clear to me, and I would hope to every American, that the Republican Party of today does not tolerate any independent thought.
06:10One might have believed that members of Congress were elected to represent their constituents,
06:17to do what they thought right for their constituents.
06:20But that's not what it is in the Republican Party right now.
06:26The sole function of Republican members of Congress is just to tell Donald Trump how brilliant he is,
06:33how infallible he is, how great he is, put up a, you know, a statue of him on Mount Rushmore.
06:40And if any Republican, like Senator Tillis, suggests otherwise, they will be politically destroyed.
06:49This is pathetic, and it has all of the hallmarks of the kind of authoritarian society that Trump wants to take us into.
06:59Dissent is simply not tolerated anymore within Republican ranks.
07:04I don't have to tell anybody that this is an extremely difficult moment in American history.
07:12Trump and the oligarchs have unlimited wealth.
07:16They have a great deal of power, and they want more.
07:19But there is something that we have.
07:23And we saw that just last week in the recent mayoral primary in New York City.
07:31So what you had is one candidate supported by all of the big money interests, all of the oligarchs.
07:40But you had the other candidate who was supported by ordinary people.
07:44And guess who won?
07:46The guy, Mr. Mamdani, who was supported by rank and file New Yorkers, won the election.
07:54So I think what we can learn from that is that if we stand together
07:59and not let Trump and his friends divide us up based on our religion or where we were born
08:05or our sexual orientation or the color of our skin, if we stand together, we can beat the oligarchs.
08:14And let me tell you, in this moment in history, that is exactly what we've got to do.
08:19Thanks very much.
