In his first major address since leaving office, Joe Biden took sharp aim at Donald Trump's Social Security policies, accusing the administration of trying to "wreck it so they could rob it." Speaking at the ACRD conference in Chicago, Biden warned of potential delays in benefits, criticized GOP tax priorities, and called for unity amid deep national divisions. He highlighted past Democratic leadership and earned ACRD’s Beacon of Hope Award. The Trump administration hit back on X, denying cuts and accusing Biden of misleading Americans. The 2024 political firestorm has begun.

00:00Fewer than 100 days, this new administration has made so much, done so much damage and so much destruction.
00:27It's kind of breathtaking it could happen that soon.
00:30They've taken a hat to the Social Security Administration, pushing an additional 7,000 employees, 7,000, out the door in that time, including the most seasoned career officials.
00:45Now they're getting ready to push thousands more out the door.
00:50Already we can see the effects.
00:51For example, thousands of people use the Social Security website every single day to check on their benefits and submit their claims.
00:59But now, the Technology Division of the Social Security Administration has been cut in half.
01:07And so the website's crashing.
01:10People can't sign on to their accounts.
01:12Folks, what do you think it does to that woman's living alone, a 74-year-old check-in, just not able to even find out whether she can't even find out what that disability claim is she has?
01:27She can't file a new disability claim.
01:29Folks, imagine the panic that causes if you're a retiree living alone with only Social Security to depend upon.
01:48So now people are overwhelming the phone lines.
01:54They're showing up at the local Social Security office, tearful and frantic, and told,
02:00Do you have an appointment?
02:02In that tone, by the way.
02:03I can give you a personal example if I'm not going to, though.
02:07To cap it all off, serious people are now generally concerned for the first time in history, for the first and only time in history, that Social Security benefits may be delayed or interrupted.
02:22Folks, let's put this in perspective.
02:24In the 90 years since Franklin Roosevelt created the Social Security system, people have always gotten their Social Security checks.
02:34They've gotten them during wartime, during recessions, during a pandemic.
02:41No matter what, they got them.
02:44But now, for the first time ever, that might change.
02:50It would be calamity for millions of families.
02:54Millions of people.
02:57But the current Secretary of Commerce doesn't seem to get it.
03:01Or based on his comments, he doesn't seem to even care.
03:05Many of you saw what he said the other day.
03:07And by the way, he's a billionaire.
03:08God love him, as my mother would say.
03:12Paying 8.5% in taxes.
03:14But anyway.
03:16Billionaires, not only what he's paying.
03:19But when he talked about the possibility that Social Security checks
03:22is not going out this month, he shrugged it off.
03:27Here's what he said.
03:29He said his 94-year-old mother-in-law wouldn't complain.
03:36Wouldn't bother her.
03:37She's probably a lovely woman.
03:39No kidding.
03:40Her son-in-law is a billionaire.
03:42What about that 94-year-old mother, living all by herself,
03:50doesn't have a billionaire in the family?
03:53Are all the retirees who depend on that monthly check to feed themselves?
03:58All those people with disabilities have no other source.
04:02What about all those people?
04:09That's who you fight for.
04:11So they should desperately need you.
04:15Folks, it's not just the Secretary of Commerce.
04:18We heard how others, empowered and emboldened by this administration,
04:23talk about Social Security.
