00:00Looks like 3-3-3-S found the safest and surest way to win this game.
00:04This is a hard choice for 4-5-6.
00:05Protect that baby and my mommy!
00:08Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're taking a deep dive into the final episode of Squid Game.
00:13It goes without saying, but there will be tons of spoilers ahead for the Season 3 finale.
00:17Season 3 of Squid Game picked up right where we left off,
00:30after Gi-hun's failed rebellion and Jung-bae's ruthless execution at the hands of In-ho,
00:35better known as the frontman.
00:36After Season 2, everyone was speculating whether or not Gi-hun figured out that In-ho was the frontman,
00:51and we eventually learned that the answer to that question is a resounding no.
00:55Near the end of the 4th episode, 222,
01:07the frontman tries to make Gi-hun a deal for the good of Jun-hee's baby,
01:10taking off his mask and revealing the truth.
01:13Enraged, Gi-hun nearly kills In-ho like he murdered Tae-ho during Hide-and-seek,
01:17but he can't do it.
01:18He also falters when In-ho tries to goad him into killing the other finalists,
01:22imagining Kang Sae-byeok, who you'll remember was the third finalist in Season 1,
01:27telling him not to stoop to In-ho's level.
01:38From this point on, it's a battle between Gi-hun and the others over Jun-hee's baby,
01:43who is made the new Player 2-22 in her mother's place after Jun-hee's sacrifice during Jump Rope.
01:52My father told me that he was the most cold-blooded of all the participants.
02:07The final episode sees our survivors jostling to be the last left alive,
02:11conspiring on how to best kill Gi-hun and 2-22 so that they can take the money for themselves.
02:16Predictably, their alliance falls apart,
02:28while Myung-ji switches sides to protect the baby when it becomes clear that Gi-hun won't give her up.
02:33In the end, Myung-ji and Gi-hun both fall from the podium.
02:36With Myung-ji perishing when the jackets tear, Gi-hun is unable to save him.
02:41In the background, it's become clearer and clearer that the frontman's philosophy about people being trash
03:00for constantly choosing to take part in the games falls apart when faced with the innocent baby,
03:05who, unlike everybody else, didn't choose to be there.
03:08But, as we already said, Gi-hun couldn't bring himself to kill the others in their sleep before the final game,
03:26even though they were all doomed anyway.
03:28The final tragedy is that Gi-hun also takes his own life,
03:40after turning to the camera and assuring the audience of his own humanity,
03:44leaving 2-22 the winner with billions of won, but nobody in the world.
03:49Nobody except the frontman, that is.
03:51Meanwhile, Hwang Joon-ho has finally reached the island,
04:02while Kang No-ul has returned after saving the life of Gyeong-suk,
04:05the father of the seriously ill girl she met in Season 2 while working in the theme park.
04:10Gyeong-suk is rescued by the boat after they finally figure out that Captain Pak is on the game's payroll
04:14and can't be trusted,
04:15while No-ul goes toe-to-toe with the officer to erase all traces of Gyeong-suk
04:20so that the game's organizers can't harm him.
04:28She also very nearly takes her own life,
04:32but at the last moment,
04:33hears 2-22 crying in the arena and manages to escape.
04:37Now, the frontman has laid explosives,
04:39and they're primed to detonate within 30 minutes.
04:45In-ho makes it inside the facility,
04:53but isn't able to get answers or closure from In-ho because he's taken 2-22.
05:07Joon-ho doesn't want to risk hurting the baby,
05:10so In-ho gets away.
05:11The VIPs are also nowhere to be seen.
05:14The entire island explodes while Giyun lies dead on the floor,
05:18and we get a 6-month time skip.
05:20Woo-suk is released from prison,
05:22joining Joon-ho,
05:23who says that all the cash Giyun was keeping in his motel has mysteriously disappeared.
05:33No-ul visits Gyeong-suk at the theme park and meets his daughter again,
05:37who's thankfully on the road to recovery.
05:39And then she gets the call she's been waiting for.
05:42Her daughter,
05:43whom she had to leave behind when her husband was executed
05:46and she had to flee North Korea,
05:48might be alive and living in China.
05:52At the same time as No-ul is departing,
05:57we get the resolution of another old plot point.
06:00Kang Se-byuk's mother arrives,
06:01finally reunited with Cheol.
06:03The brother Se-byuk was so desperate to protect
06:06after also escaping North Korea.
06:12But what happened to the frontman?
06:14As he explains to Giyun earlier,
06:17there's no point killing him
06:18because even with him gone,
06:19the gamers will only continue.
06:21They started long before he won them, after all.
06:24We find out that he's alive
06:33and has traveled all the way to Los Angeles,
06:36where he locates Giyun's estranged daughter Gah-young.
06:38She insists that she doesn't want to speak to her father anymore,
06:52only for In-ho to reveal that Giyun has died
06:54and he's bringing her his personal effects.
06:58He gives her Giyun's bloody tracksuit,
07:01somewhat bizarrely,
07:02but also a bank card with what's left of Giyun's fortune on it.
07:05So we can safely assume that the frontman knew
07:08where Giyun was living this entire time
07:10and took the money to deliver it to Gah-young.
07:12And finally, what about 2-22?
07:14Though the baby remains nameless,
07:16after the time skip,
07:18Joon-ho returns home to find 2-22
07:20safely swaddled in his apartment,
07:22along with another bank card,
07:24this one containing her winnings from the games.
07:26It seems that Joon-ho is now going to be her guardian,
07:29since both Myung-ji and Joon-hee have died.
07:31But back in LA,
07:32there's one final scene that raises more questions than answers.
07:36While driving in his SUV,
07:38the frontman stops,
07:39rolls down the window,
07:40and observes a man playing Dachy with a mysterious woman.
07:49That woman turns around
07:51and reveals that she's none other than Cate Blanchett
07:53in a cameo role.
07:54She and In-ho lock eyes,
08:02and he forlornly looks away while she keeps playing.
08:05It's unspoken that she knows what she's doing,
08:07but equally,
08:08he seems to be disillusioned with the games
08:10and Giyun's choice to die
08:12rather than hurt the baby and take the money.
08:14Because of Giyun,
08:15every single person who chose to be in those games
08:18died with nothing,
08:19and the only person who didn't choose it,
08:21the only person who isn't trashed by the frontman's logic
08:24has won.
08:25And perhaps Giyun thought he didn't deserve to live anymore
08:28after what he did to Dae-ho,
08:29whose failure was born from fear rather than malice.
08:38Since some comments all the way back in Season 1, though,
08:41when we were first introduced to the VIPs,
08:43people have been dying to know
08:44whether the games really do exist in other countries.
08:47The games this edition have been amazing.
08:50Right.
08:50The contest in Korea was the best.
08:55Cate Blanchett's appearance proves that yes, they do,
08:58even in America,
08:59the richest country in the world.
09:01And considering the other VIPs got away,
09:04the frontman's claim that the games will continue regardless
09:06seems to be entirely true.
09:17They likely even have enough money
09:21to rebuild in South Korea
09:22on one of the many other empty islands Joon-ho searched.

09:39But with Gi-hun's last words,
09:44humans are,
09:45ringing in our ears,
09:46what do you think?
09:47Are humans inherently good
09:49and worth saving as Gi-hun believes?
09:50Or are they inherently selfish and cruel
09:53like the frontman thinks?
09:54It's this conflict
10:10that's central to Squid Game.
10:12And ultimately,
10:13you have to make your own decision
10:14about what humans are and aren't.
10:17He fails to stop the games,
10:18but was he wrong to try?
10:20Was he wrong to die
10:21for what he believed in
10:22and give 222 a better life?
10:24And will Netflix use its power
10:26over the Squid Game IP
10:27to make international spin-offs,
10:29since it's Netflix
10:30and not creator Hwang Dong-hyuk
10:31that controls the rights?
10:32What are you waiting for,
10:33456?
10:35Just to end it already.
10:38I get it.
10:40Some goodbyes take time.
10:42Only time will tell,
10:43but Squid Game The Challenge
10:45has been renewed for a season two
10:46despite all the controversy around it.
