00:00You're not going to see us complaining. We're having a good time.
00:02Welcome to Miz Mojo, and today we're looking at infamous celebrity fashion looks that definitely didn't deserve the criticism they received.
00:11When you see the dress, your jaw drops. All of the embroidery. I mean, it's so intricately, beautifully made.
00:20Sam Smith's latex look
00:22On first glance, this inflatable latex ensemble Sam Smith wore to the 2023 Brit Awards is a bit shocking.
00:29The exaggerated silhouette, produced by their shoulder pads and blow-up pants, looks like something out of a Picasso painting.
00:37Honestly, I felt so powerful. More powerful than I ever felt in anything, because it was the humor. The humor behind it.
00:44While some call this look attention-seeking and humiliating, it seems their critics are missing the point.
00:51Like their music, the purpose of Sam Smith choosing an outfit like this is to evoke a reaction in people.
00:59Music and out there, outrageous fashion go hand in hand. Just look at Lady Gaga.
01:09This outfit was designed to seek out people's attention and reactions, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
01:15And we did it in heels. It was fabulous. One day I'll be blown up again. She will rise again one day.
01:20This Australian costume designer is known for her creativity and ability to think outside the box.
01:34There was no reason to expect a typically straight-laced event like the Oscars would be able to reign her in.
01:40I remember getting phone calls from people back in Australia going, no, don't do it, don't do it.
01:44And I was like, it's too late. I haven't got anything else to wear.
01:47Nominated for Best Costume Design for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Gardiner arrived in a floor-length gown made out of 254 expired American Express gold cards.
01:59While some thought the dress tacky and inappropriate for the event, it was intended as a statement on wealth and the prestige and power associated with the elite credit card.
02:09History seems to be on Gardiner's side as a replica of her dress was recently sold for over $12,000 at auction.
02:17It's a show and a film about acceptance. And it's been embraced. It's brilliant. It's wonderful.
02:24Victoria and David Beckham in leather.
02:26This celebrity couple is made up of two individuals known for being stylish in their own right.
02:32But over the years, they've come out with some seriously iconic coordinating ensembles.
02:37I tried to think back to when I decided to wear a purple suit. I don't know when that happened.
02:43I think I just took Victoria's lead on it. But what were we thinking?
02:53But it was fun.
02:54Most infamous, perhaps for the wrong reasons, is the matching Gucci leather look they wore to a Versace event in 1999.
03:01Both David and Victoria have expressed some regret about this look. Victoria even going so far as to say it haunts her.
03:08We were wearing Gucci. It was a Versace dinner, which is inappropriate in itself.
03:15But, you know, we really considered those outfits. I mean, we really thought about it.
03:19And there was a naivety to it that was just so sweet.
03:23But it haunts you.
03:25Because everybody pulls it out of the bag, Andy.
03:27Right.
03:27Maybe it's because they're two of the most beautiful people on Earth, but they really don't look that bad.
03:33In fact, they look pretty cool. Like something out of a Matrix movie. Victoria, you're being too hard on yourself.
03:39And I still have these. I still have these outfits.
03:42How would you wear it today?
03:44I wouldn't.
03:46Pink's ultimate Y2K outfit.
03:48It was the year 2000, and Pink wanted everyone at the VMAs to know that the subdued styles of the 90s were officially out.
03:55Grrrr. Scary, isn't it? Close-ups.
03:59She rocked up in the lowest-rise jeans you've ever seen.
04:02A metallic halter crop top and a floor-length shiny gold Afghan coat.
04:06The outfit was completed by pink spiky hair that looks literally out of this world.
04:12Everybody's great. So it's like...
04:13I love your hair. It's awesome, dude.
04:16So Carson Daly comes up and outstakes as me.
04:18Don't interrupt, but, you know...
04:19It's alright. It's alright.
04:20Outrageous, yes, but also a perfect time capsule of the freedom and optimism felt at the beginning of the new millennium.
04:27There was only a short window of time in which an outfit like this could work, and Pink knew exactly when that time was.
04:34It's your first VMAs. You gotta be like, just... The drilling must be flowing.
04:38I'm just happy to be here.
04:40Celine Dion's backwards pantsuit.
04:43It's 1999. You made headlines all over the place in your backwards suit.
04:48If I could turn back side.
04:50Yes!
04:50Red carpets weren't as progressive in 1999 as they are today, and the Oscars especially so.
04:57When Celine Dion arrived in this stunning all-white John Galliano ensemble, she was practically the only woman wearing pants at the entire event.
05:05Who's... I think you are the chicest... You are one of the chicest women in the business. You know that.
05:12The attention-grabbing look was made even more interesting by her backwards tuxedo jacket, which gave the otherwise conservative outfit a sexy open-back detail.
05:22While it was criticized heavily at the time, Dion's choice to break tradition and wear pants to the Oscars paved the way for others to push gender boundaries on the red carpet.
05:31People thought I made a mistake because I was late and I put the jacket reverse. I'm not stupid.
05:39Right.
05:40It wasn't supposed to be worn like that and I'm keeping it.
05:44Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake's Canadian tuxedos.
05:47You know what? We have fun. We love what we're doing. So it doesn't even feel like work, seriously. You know, I love what I do, so that's what matters.
05:54You can't think of Britney and Justin without thinking of this iconic denim-on-denim-on-denim look.
06:00The couple arrived at the 2001 American Music Awards in head-to-toe denim, an idea that was originally suggested by Spears as a joke.
06:09I'm here to support. I'm here for support.
06:12She was surprised when her stylist went along with it, and the whole team had fun putting together this outside-the-box look.
06:18The casual fabric was balanced out with plenty of bling, making a truly red carpet-worthy outfit.
06:24Today, we look back on this moment in fashion history with fondness, and many have recreated this outfit for some truly unforgettable Halloween costumes.
06:33Oops, I did it again. I did it, you're on.
06:39Rihanna's iconic Swarovski gown.
06:42Over the years, the singer has come out with some truly stunning fashion looks, but this might be her most controversial.
06:48For the 2014 Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards, Rihanna wore a custom fishnet gown by Adam Selman, dripping in over 200,000 Swarovski crystals.
07:00Well, you know, Island Girls are sassy, and we love blingy, outrageous stuff, so this is definitely, if Cropover had a red carpet, this would be it.
07:13Rihanna opted to go braless to preserve the lines of the dress, making the already scandalous dress even more risqué.
07:20This is the main reason why she received significant criticism for this look, as some thought the singer went too far.
07:27Why, my t-shirt bother you?
07:31They're covered in Swarovski crystals, girl!
07:35Rihanna has stated she still stands by the look, and we can see why.
07:39She looked phenomenal. This dress will no doubt go down as one of her best looks of all time.
07:45There are rules!
07:46Our rules are meant to be broken.
07:50Nicole Kidman's chartreuse dress.
07:53Named for the green hue of a French herbal liquor, chartreuse is quite the contentious color.
07:58The debate over the merits of the chartreuse was brought to the Oscars' red carpet in 1997,
08:05when Nicole Kidman arrived in a floor-length Dior gown.
08:07I was in the UK, and so I would go to Paris on the weekends a lot, and that's how I built my relationship with John Galliano.
08:15And I didn't realize that it was sort of such a bold move.
08:19While others kept their opinion on the dress to themselves, Joan Rivers thought otherwise.
08:24She loudly proclaimed the color a terrible choice for Kidman, and compared it to vomit.
08:29And if we can get... Here we go. Absolutely. I have some Altoids here. Yes?
08:34Kidman maintained her composure anyways, and told Women's Wear Daily how much she loved her dress, despite its controversial color.
08:42Looking back, she genuinely did pull off a difficult color, and looked stunning that night.
08:47It was made for me, and made for my body. It was just fantastic. And I still have it. I own it.
08:55This dress from the 2001 Academy Awards has become one of the most memorable looks in red carpet history.
09:03This is not your swan song tonight. This is a rather unusual creation.
09:07Yeah. My friend made it.
09:09Designed by Ma-Jan Paoski, the dress featured a sheer bedazzled bodysuit and a tall recreation of a swan, with its head resting on the Icelandic artist's chest.
09:19This dress made headlines after the event, and the commentary was overwhelmingly negative.
09:25Bjork's creative look was almost universally reviled and endlessly mocked, simply because it went against the norm at the time.
09:32I'm just gonna air myself out. Bam!
09:37I guess we know what happened to the ugly duckling.
09:41Today, people seem to have changed their minds.
09:43The dress has been featured at both the MoMA and the Met, cementing its place in fashion history.
09:49Notions of performativity are included in a section on the ballet and the opera as vehicles of camp.
09:56We have Bjork's famous dress that she wore to the Academy Awards.

10:16Cher's Black Oscars Ensemble
10:17Feeling snubbed by the Academy after not receiving a nomination for her role in Mask, Cher wanted to make a big splash at the 1986 Oscars.
10:27They hated the way I dressed, and I had young boyfriends, and they just thought I wasn't serious, so I came out and said,
10:33as you can see, I got my handbook on how to dress like a serious actress.
10:37Bob Mackie came up with this show-stopping outfit that was incredibly Cher in all the best ways.
10:43From the light-catching beadwork to her completely bare midriff, and of course, the massive feathered headdress.
10:49This look is peak Cher.
10:51And my boyfriend, God bless him, Joshua Dawn, and Joshua was so nervous because I kept saying,
10:57Joshy, do you care what I'm wearing? Can anything be too much?
11:00He was like, no, no, I'm fine with it.
11:02And I walked out of my bedroom, he almost passed out.
11:04This outfit went against all the red carpet rules of the Oscars, which helped Cher achieve her attention-grabbing goal.
11:10Though others criticized this look, it apparently worked as Cher went on to win her Oscar for Moonstruck in 1988.
11:18Where are you taking me?
11:20To the bed.
11:23Oh, God.
11:24Okay, I don't care, I don't care.
11:25Take me, take me to the bed.
11:27Do you think these looks were judged too harshly, or were they total fashion fails?
11:32Let us know in the comments.
11:34Even as a child, I remember thinking, she could beat me, but she cannot beat my outfit.
