Sir Keir Starmer says the welfare system must be reformed without removing the “safety net” for vulnerable people. Speaking at the Welsh Labour conference, he said change is a “moral imperative” but must be done “the Labour way” - supporting those in need while helping others back into work. Report by Covellm. 00:00The world is changing around us. We've entered a new era. That's in defence, in trade, in industry,
00:09in technology. In fact, across the board. Change that has and will impact almost every aspect of
00:18our lives. I know how tough that is. And that's why this government is making different choices.
00:24Even when they are difficult, like welfare, we cannot take away the safety net that vulnerable
00:33people rely on. And we won't. But we also can't let it become a snare for those who can and want to
00:40work. And everyone agrees that our welfare system is broken. Failing people every day. A generation
00:47of young people written off for good. And the cost spiring out of control. Fixing it is a moral
00:53imperative. But we need to do it in a labour way conference. And we will. Protecting those
01:02who need it most. Investing millions in mental health support. Reforming our NHS so people
01:09aren't stuck on waiting lists for years on end. Building council homes for people to build
01:15their lives around. Programs and good jobs to get people back into work. And the stronger
01:21rights that workers deserve. More opportunities. More homes. Better support conference. That
01:27is the labour way.
01:28is the labour way.
