Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall says she “hopes” concessions to the welfare Bill will win over Labour rebels, despite some still refusing to back it. She called the changes a sign of “strength in listening” and insisted protections for existing claimants were standard practice, aimed at easing widespread concerns ahead of Tuesday’s vote. 00:00I hope these changes will mean we get support for our bill, a bill that wants to ensure fairness in the welfare system for people who really need support and fairness for the taxpayer too.
00:14It's really important that we make changes in future so the welfare state is there for people who really, really need it.
00:21We support those who can't work and we make sure those who can work get the help they need.
00:26It's very common in the welfare system that there are protections for existing claimants. That's happened before.
00:36But what I think is important about the changes we've introduced is they will make sure existing people aren't affected.
00:42I know there has been real anxiety and concern even though 9 out of 10 people currently on PIP wouldn't be affected.
00:50There has been great anxiety. We've listened to that. We're protecting existing claimants.
00:55But we're making changes for the future so those who can work get support and those who can't are protected.
01:02Sometimes there's strength in listening.
01:06I really believe that to be the case, that you end up in the right position when you talk to all of those with knowledge and experience.
01:13And actually, if you want decisions to be the right ones and to last for generations to come, I believe that's how you make the right changes.
01:23There's more to do to talk to people over the coming days.
01:26But this plan is rooted in labour values.
01:29Work for those who can, security for those that can't.
01:32And I am very hopeful that we'll get this bill through the House.
01:35Work for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can, security for those who can
