00:07The Amazon billionaire and former TV anchor tied the knot Friday in a lavish celebration.
00:12The guest list for the three-day $10 million extravaganza included Oprah, Bill Gates,
00:17Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Karlie Kloss, Ivanka Trump, Orlando Bloom,
00:23and Leonardo DiCaprio, just to name a few. The couple hosted A-list attendees in heavily
00:27booked hotels across the city, and a portion of Venice natives were not so welcoming.
00:32Blocked streets and boat reroutes prompted a group of them to make their feelings known.
00:36Banners reading, if you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax,
00:40and no space for Bezos were displayed in Venice ahead of the nuptials.
00:44Meanwhile, other protesters threatened to fill the canals with inflatables,
00:47dinghies, and boats to obstruct Bezos' water taxis. Greenpeace, Italy, and UK-based group
00:53Everyone Hates Elon joined in by unveiling the aforementioned tax-angled message
00:57on a 400-square-meter banner in the middle of St. Mark's Square on Monday.
01:01It was swiftly removed by police.
01:03Chief among the concerns are Venice's already overcrowded streets,
01:06worsened by the constant influx of tourists, and climate change contributing to a sinking city.
01:11The pop-up protests seem to have worked.
01:13The BBC reported on Tuesday that a local official confirmed that the wedding celebrations
01:17would be moved to an area further from the city center.
01:20It's worth noting the now-married couple reportedly quietly donated to Venetian charities in April
01:24and sourced 80% of their wedding provisions from local vendors.
