At a press briefing, President Trump was asked about possible trade deals.
Transcript
00:00Mr. President, you have a deadline coming up on trade in two weeks.
00:05Which countries, if any, are close to agreements with the administration?
00:11Well, that's an interesting question.
00:13We've made a deal with China.
00:14We've made a deal with probably four or five different countries.
00:18With the UK, it was a great deal for both.
00:22And we're in the process of making some others.
00:24But ultimately, in fact, Scott is here.
00:27Howard Lutnick, these two guys have been doing an incredible job.
00:29And the people that work with them have been doing an incredible job.
00:33But, you know, we have 200 countries.
00:35You could say 200 countries plus.
00:36We can't do that.
00:38So at a certain point over the next week and a half or so, or maybe before,
00:42we're going to send out a letter.
00:43We've talked to many of the countries.
00:45And we're just going to tell them what they have to pay to do business in the United States.
00:49And it's going to go very quickly.
00:51But some of the bigger countries, India, I think we're going to reach a deal
00:56where we have the right to go in and trade.
00:58Right now, it's restricted.
00:59You can't walk in there.
01:00You can't even think about it.
01:01We're looking to get a full trade barrier dropping, which is unthinkable.
01:08And I'm not sure that that's going to happen.
01:10But as of this moment, we've agreed to that.
01:12Go into Indian trade.
01:13We're going to be trading in China.
01:14That's going to come a little bit down the road, but we're going to be trading in China.
01:17We have a lot of great things going.
01:19And we're getting along with countries.
01:21But some will be disappointed because they're going to have to pay tariffs.
01:24And we've taken in already hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs.
01:29No inflation.
01:31The only problem we have is we have a Fed guy that doesn't understand what's happening.
01:34And it would be great if it lowered the rate because we'd be able to borrow a lot cheaper.
01:38Why don't we keep it on this subject?
01:45This is such a big subject.
01:47You know what?
01:48Trade is so big.
01:49But this, I don't know, in a certain way, this might be bigger than trade.
01:52I think this is bigger than trade.
