00:00Take over to Wall Street! Take over to Wall Street! Take over to Wall Street!
00:05Make sure you get the crowd in the background, Mark.
00:08Another shot of you and the Channing Masses. I'm so over this protest.
00:12Next time we'll do a piece on Brazilian runway models, I promise.
00:15Gonna hold you to that. Alright, let's roll this puppy.
00:19Roger that.
00:21Hey, Ringo! You're messing up sound! How about you take it somewhere else?
00:25Take over to Wall Street! Take over to Wall Street!
00:28Okay, live in three.
00:30Take over to Wall Street! Take over to Wall Street!
00:32I'm here at Boylan Plaza on day 36 of the takeover protest.
00:38Hundreds have gathered here and in other cities across the country to take a stand against what they say is greed and corruption.
00:50Oh my God!
00:51If you just tuned in, there's been some kind of explosion on the south-east side of the Boylan Plaza.
00:59We do not know what caused this or if there are injuries, but I can see what appear to be people on the ground not moving.
01:06This is unbelievable.
01:20Any idea how many people were killed?
01:22Initial reports say five dead, 28 injured.
01:25There's feds everywhere.
01:27Well, that's normal procedure in the event of a bomb.
01:31Nothing normal about this.
01:33Detective!
01:34Did the police know who's behind this?
01:35They think this was a terrorist attack.
01:37No comment, you'll have to deal with press relations.
01:39Oh, sorry.
01:49NYPD.
01:50NYPD's over there.
01:52FBI's taking jurisdiction to crime scene.
01:58Come on, cousin.
02:07FBI turned you guys away too, huh?
02:08Yeah, they wouldn't let us pass the crime scene tick.
02:10What's going on?
02:11Gates is talking to the feds, trying to get a handle on that.
02:14What do we know about the explosion who set it off?
02:16It probably wasn't a suicide bomber.
02:17I got a friend who was a medic.
02:19Said there were no explosive vests on any of their bodies.
02:21Everything else is just rumor at this point.
02:25Listen up, people.
02:26We're still piecing together what happened here.
02:28But what I can tell you,
02:30FBI and Homeland Security will be taking point on this investigation.
02:34NYPD will act in a support capacity.
02:37Our first assignment is to determine if any of the victims were targeted because of their involvement in the protest.
02:42Uniforms are bringing families to the precinct as we speak.
02:45So let's go hold some hands and do our jobs.
02:48Mr. Levine, I understand that one of the victims, Jesse Friedman, worked closely with you.
02:57It was more than that.
02:58He was a friend, a comrade in arms, you know?
03:01Jesse was a recruiter.
03:03When attendance dropped a few weeks back, even I thought it was time to pack up.
03:06But Jesse just threw my favorite quote back at me.
03:08The one about sinning by silence.
03:11To sin by silence when we should protest makes cowards of men.
03:16We know that this is difficult, but what was your husband's involvement with the takeover movement?
03:24Matt wasn't involved. Neither am I.
03:28So why are we at Boylan Plaza?
03:31It's our first time here. We wanted to take in as much as we could.
03:35Your tourists?
03:37We'd just been to the top of the Empire State Building.
03:40We had an extra few minutes, so we decided to see what the protest was all about.
03:48Matt and I just bought a house.
03:51We were going to start a family.
03:54We had all these plans.
03:57What am I going to do now?
04:07You good?
04:10Yeah.
04:11Yeah, just this case, you know, kind of gets to you.
04:14How'd it go with the rest of the family?
04:18Um, one victim was the first kid in his family to go to college, and the other was a mother of two, so...
04:26About like you'd expect.
04:29No one seems to have been targeted, though.
04:31So their deaths were at random.
04:33You know, most of our victims, they...
04:37They die for a reason.
04:38You know, there's a logic behind it.
04:40It's a twisted logic at times, but...
04:44It needs to make some kind of sense.
04:46Yeah, but in this case, these people were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
04:49And their future, and all their plans, everything is just gone in a flash.
04:59It makes you think about all those things in your own life that you don't want to put off anymore.
05:03What?
05:08Yo.
05:10Captain's gathering the troops.
05:12Now that it appears that this attack was not directed at any specific individual, we've got a new assignment from the FBI.
05:23We all know where the bomb went off.
05:26It was here, right next to this lamppost.
05:29The FBI just recovered this photo from a protester's cell phone.
05:34It's at the same location, taken 47 seconds before the explosion.
05:41That could only mean one thing.
05:43The bomb was placed here by someone within our 47-second time period.
05:47Our task is to interview all witnesses who were present at Boylan Plaza.
05:53We are looking for anyone who saw what went on by this lamppost before the blast.
05:58Sir, there are over 300 names on this list. How do you recommend that we proceed?
06:02We bring in more shifts.
06:04Someone on that list saw the bomb being planted within our 47-second window.
06:09We find that person, we find the bomber.
06:12The bomber.
06:29Thank you for your time.
06:33Well, that was unhelpful.
06:35Yeah, I'm starting to sense a pattern.
06:37You know, this next woman says that she was in the middle of the whole thing.
06:43We were right here.
06:44It's like the bomb went off right next to us.
06:46Who was we?
06:47Me and my sister Nadia.
06:48She's out there right now waiting.
06:49Should I go get her?
06:50Uh, no.
06:51Actually, it's better if we just talk one-on-one.
06:53Now, were the two of you participating in the protests?
06:56Do I look like I'm in the 99%?
06:58No.
06:59We just left this bridal boutique near the plaza.
07:00Nadia is getting married in June.
07:02And did you notice anyone standing near the light post?
07:05I don't think so.
07:06Okay.
07:07Well, I'm gonna need you to tell us everything that you remember from just before the bombing,
07:10starting with where you were.
07:11We were at the coffee truck just trying to figure out our next move.
07:15I'm a little shocked out, Nadia.
07:16I mean, you tried on 11 dresses.
07:18It made me look like a safe-off marshmallow.
07:20We have to keep looking.
07:21Can we look from home online?
07:23I'm not buying my wedding dress on the internet.
07:25It's just to give us ideas.
07:27We need to regroup.
07:28You aren't this close to Bridezilla territory.
07:31Oh, maybe I'll wear jeans to my wedding.
07:33Maybe we can hire that guy as a band.
07:35That's mine!
07:36Put that back!
07:37Could you imagine what I'm saying?
07:39Dammit!
07:40Watch where you're going!
07:41This is my...
07:42The force of it knocked us on our asses.
07:45Nadia almost got trampled.
07:46Wait, can you go back to the Middle Eastern man carrying the box?
07:49You said that he was sweaty and nervous?
07:52And was he headed toward the lamppost?
07:54Yeah.
07:55Do you remember his face well enough to help us with the sketch?
07:59West Side Wally.
08:00Back by popular demand.
08:02Come on, Kojak.
08:03You know I prefer West Side.
08:06West Side, then.
08:08Uh, did you ever see that man in the plaza?
08:11Nope.
08:12Guy's not familiar.
08:13Then again, lots of people, lots of faces.
08:15Plus, I was over here.
08:16That's my usual spot.
08:17Not by the coffee truck.
08:18I don't care for the smell.
08:19That put you 50 feet away from when the bomb went off.
08:22Did you have a clear view of this lamppost?
08:24Not really, man.
08:25And you know I always try to help Johnny Law.
08:27Did you notice anything out of the ordinary in the minute before the explosion anyone suspicious?
08:32Hey, go Wall Street! Hey, go Wall Street! Hey, go Wall Street!
08:36As a matter of fact, I did.
08:41Hey, go Wall Street! Hey, go Wall Street! Hey, go Wall Street! Hey, go Wall Street!
08:52We're good to go.
08:57stop let me understand this you you saw beethoven the composer who's been dead for 200 years
09:09in borland plaza this afternoon oh yeah and i bet that half-deaf bastard is behind all this
09:14west side are you on any medications of any kind i don't see how that's relevant
09:21what do you mean we have no leads what about the middle eastern man we interviewed him
09:25he cleared yeah that box he was carrying full of chinese takeout most dangerous thing in there
09:30was msg but the fact is is that we interviewed 94 people and we've got nothing to show for it
09:35this is not the news i was hoping for especially since the fbi sent this over it was emailed to
09:42two other takeover locations in new york an hour ago you were warned to stop the protests you didn't
09:47listen start listening now or today's bombing will be just the beginning he's gonna hit another
09:52protest the fbi is keeping this one under wraps but the clock is still ticking here and what
09:57you're telling me is that we're no closer to getting this guy than we were when the bomb went
10:01off sir somebody on this list saw exactly what happened within that 47 second window but the
10:07problem is is that they're mixed in with all of these people that saw absolutely nothing it's like
10:11trying to find waldo in a sea of waldos i take it you have a proposal to fix that
10:17if the fbi would let us view all video shot in the plaza maybe we can figure out who is closest
10:24to the bomb start prioritizing the interviews okay i'll go down there do my best and if that
10:31doesn't work we'll look to plan b in the meantime keep working on the list
10:35she doesn't seem very optimistic about getting that footage
10:40you know the witnesses that were closest to the bomb aren't on our list
10:45maybe dead men do tell tales
10:50i just saw a reporter in reception have security get him out of here i don't want him bothering the
10:56victim's families so nice to see a friendly face fbi has been up in mine all night all from the
11:03explosion we never had a chance you're looking for official cause of death it's multiple blunt force
11:09trauma actually we're wondering if there's anything on the bodies that might lead us to whoever did
11:12this possibly meet jesse friedman he was the recruiter for the takeover move he was also the
11:18guy closest to the blast and we found bits of this embedded all over his skin blue fabric lab id'd it
11:24as canvas they also found high concentrations of explosive residue on it the canvas was part of
11:30whatever contained the bomb looks that way so a duffel or suitcase this is a huge break that means
11:35we're looking for someone carrying a blue bag let's go update captain gates uh can you just give me
11:39a minute
11:39yeah sure
11:43hey honey how you doing yeah i just needed a minute you look exhausted how long you been here
11:57i'm not sure it's been so crazy i've been cataloging the victim's personal effects
12:03well that can't be easy
12:05it was fine then i saw how one of them had on this bracelet string with beads made by a little kid
12:12it was like that bracelet i made you for father's day when i was six
12:16do you remember remember i still have it
12:20come on let's get you home no i should say there's still work to do and it'll be here tomorrow
12:28dr parry said i had to get all this finished before she will tell you the same thing
12:32get you out of here
12:36all right let's roll this puppy
12:48that was our very own leanne west about to report live from boylan plaza yesterday
12:53moments later tragedy struck be aware some of the images we're about to show you may be disturbing to
12:59some viewers hundreds have gathered here and in other cities across the country to take a stand
13:05against what they say is greed and corruption
13:07so far no suspects have been named in the bombing
13:16thank you you're welcome
13:18so how's our how's our girl doing
13:22she's upstairs in bed asleep
13:25was there to keep her in there
13:27honey do you ever wonder why i never visited you at the precinct the first
13:33year you were working there
13:34well i always thought it was because of the harsh lighting
13:36well that was a consideration
13:39now i thought if i if i saw you
13:42acting
13:43like a cop i'd start thinking of you
13:45as a cop and i just
13:47that that brought on all manner of nightmares
13:51how did you get over it
13:53eventually you realize your children are going to make choices you don't like
13:57just a fact of life
13:59well if the bombing proves anything it's that bad things can happen no matter what you do
14:04nobody's tomorrow is guaranteed
14:06so
14:09how do you plan to act on this realization
14:13what do you mean
14:14oh you know what i mean
14:15richard how much longer you're going to drag your heels before you tell beckett how you feel and i mean while she is awake
14:22not lying on the ground with a bullet in her chest
14:24you don't understand
14:26it's complicated so you say
14:28only it's not
14:30it's not
14:32nobody's tomorrows are guaranteed
14:35right
14:36wouldn't it be better to tell her
14:39even if the timing is wrong
14:40than never to tell her at all
14:42and what if she isn't ready
14:47then she never will be
14:50then you move on
14:52hey
15:02hey thanks
15:04you got a sec
15:06yeah what's up
15:08um
15:09i've been thinking
15:11about the victims
15:13and
15:14all the opportunities
15:16they'll never have
15:18and i don't want that
15:23to happen
15:24i've been
15:27beckett
15:29we got something
15:32um
15:33it's okay
15:34you can wait until after the case
15:37did you get the video from the plaza
15:47not yet but what i have here is even better
15:49data from wireless carriers that shows us all the gps activated cell phones in boyland plaza
15:54this is the plaza yesterday at 432 right before the explosion
15:58each red dot represents the gps position of a specific phone
16:01how did you get this
16:03i called in a favor from a friend at homeland security
16:05that is a damn good friend
16:07so then if those red dots represent cell phones
16:09can we figure out who they belong to
16:11that's the whole idea
16:12this shows us who is closest to the bomb
16:15it gives us our witnesses
16:16well he can even show us where everyone was in real time
16:18advance it to 432
16:20the dots that disappeared that's the explosion
16:34wait a second you guys see that
16:35it was right before the bomb went off
16:38can you take it back 10 seconds
16:40that's on right there
16:46right before the explosion
16:48it goes to the blast site
16:49waits for a second
16:52and then rushes away
16:54play it again
16:55that's the bomber
17:02let's see if we can pull up his id
17:03his phone's registered on andrew haynes
17:08tell me where he is right now
17:10no gps signal
17:15his battery's either dead or his phone is off
17:18wait a minute haynes sounds familiar
17:20he showed up in the precinct 20 minutes ago for an interview
17:28the bomber's in the building
17:30unis gave him a full body
17:36no weapons no explosives
17:37still thinks he's here as a witness
17:39we told him the searcher's routine
17:41so this is andrew haynes
17:43what's his story
17:44he has it out for the takeover movement
17:46he's organized counter demonstrations
17:48disrupted their rallies
17:49he's even handed out flyers
17:50saying how they should be stopped by any means necessary
17:52he walks the walk too
17:53he was a suspect in the bombing of some greenpeace offices a few years back
17:56anything turn up at his place
17:57yeah a smoking gun
17:59uni's found receipts to an internet cafe where he goes
18:02now they trace those email threads back to that cafe
18:04and haynes login id
18:05he's our guy
18:06so why is he strolling in here just as cool as can be
18:09my guess
18:10he's proud of what he's done
18:11can't wait to tell someone about it
18:12well then let's give him the opportunity to do just that
18:15hi mr haynes i'm detective k beckett
18:20thank you so much for coming in
18:22it's about time you brought me in here man
18:24i had to rub elbows with those whiny little troublemakers
18:27i was gonna do something drastic
18:29oh yeah well i wouldn't blame you
18:31hey re-think her
18:33i don't respect that
18:34um you know my personal feelings aside
18:36i still have to investigate this incident
18:37yeah you know you gotta dot your eyes across your teeth
18:40i get that
18:41exactly so i just have to ask you a few questions
18:44about what you saw just before the bombing
18:47starting with where you were
18:49um i uh but it was
18:53this type right up here
18:55um so that's about a hundred feet from the blast site
19:00yeah
19:00and what were you doing there
19:02oh that's uh pretty much getting hassled
19:04hey nimrod here educate yourself
19:07here why don't you give this a read
19:09hey garanamo pants
19:10quit the pity party
19:12get a freaking job pull yourself up by a boot strip
19:15hello
19:15hey i'm talking to you
19:17kitten can you take
19:18what's your problem
19:20you don't like what i have to say
19:21i'm sorry
19:21huh
19:22can't face the truth
19:23i'm sorry just just so i'm clear
19:25so you were debating with the protesters until that bomb went off
19:28yeah i was trying to give them a reality check
19:30i mean you know they're all up in arms about the greedy corporation
19:32who do they think is creating the jobs
19:34you know they're a bunch of silver spoon hypocrites
19:36i mean half of them they don't
19:38they don't even know who they're protesting against
19:40right and stopping them would actually be a service to this country
19:42yeah it'd be item number one on any true patriots to do list
19:53and you are a true patriot
19:54you're damn right about that
19:55that's why you put that bomb in the closet
19:57to defend the country that you love
19:58what are you talking about
20:05come on andrew i don't want you to have to serve any more time than you have to
20:10we know that you weren't with those protesters you were down here
20:13dropping off the bomb and then running for cover
20:16based on what
20:17we traced your phone the gps places you right there
20:20you can't prove it was me i lost my phone yesterday
20:22really
20:22hmm
20:23okay then maybe you can explain this
20:26threatening emails that you sent from an internet cafe promising to continue those bombings
20:35until the protests stopped
20:39i'd like to talk to my lawyer
20:45white male anti-social loner extreme political abuse he's a perfect fit for the profile bsu worked up for us
20:51he'll continue questioning in downtown
20:54according to my people he's nowhere near confessing
20:56well have them re-interview the witnesses and find us someone that sell haynes put that backpack down
21:04you're welcome
21:06so we talked to 20 witnesses along haynes's gps path but none of them can positively i deal
21:10oh confusion no one's exactly sure what happened you guys have any luck
21:14four people remember seeing a guy in a black takeover hoodie but nobody remembers seeing his face
21:19a black hoodie doesn't get his home not with half the protesters wearing it
21:22somebody had to have seen this guy this is a protester haven't spoken to yet the street drummer
21:30after the cameraman rousted him that bridesmaid said he relocated by the coffee truck which would
21:36put him right in haynes's path which means he could have seen haynes's face yeah but we don't know
21:40his name and he's not on our witness list how are we gonna find this guy you know what he's a street
21:45performer he's probably gotten nuisance citations which means if he has we should be able to idea
21:52i make music why do you arrest me we're not arresting you malik we just need to ask you a few questions
21:58about what you saw in boylan plaza yesterday afternoon i know nothing about the bomb i am an
22:02innocent man and we believe you but we think that you might have seen something that'll help us catch
22:07the person who did this i don't want trouble malik your visa expired didn't it is that what's worrying
22:16you i cannot go back to my country and i won't make you i don't care about your immigration status we
22:21just need to know exactly what you saw just before that explosion
22:27i will tell you what i can
22:32okay when you're playing by the coffee truck a man walked by you wearing a black takeover sweatshirt
22:39do you remember saying yes i saw him
22:44wait are you saying that you saw the man wearing the takeover sweatshirt put down a blue backpack in
22:49front of the lamp post yes did you get a good look at his face damn it
22:57you're certain the man you saw leaving the backpack was hispanic and in his twenties yes
23:06i gave the wrong answer are you sure this wasn't the person no it's not him
23:11the fbi's got the wrong guy which means the real bomber is still out there
23:24if andrew haynes didn't plant the bomb then why did he email those threats why does his gps show him
23:30playing the scene we can't answer that yet but our witness gave a good description it was this man
23:34how do we know this guy's not making this up look the details of the bomb haven't been released to
23:40the press yet so how would our witness know about the blue backpack unless he actually saw it
23:46are you people who pursue this see where it leads but andrew haynes is still a fine suspect at least
23:51until you can give me something more than the word of a street musician
23:56identifying this man that is now our top priority according to our witness he was wearing a takeover
24:02sweatshirt so he might be part of the movement show the sketch around talk to other protesters if
24:07he was a regular in boylan plaza someone there must know who he is not you mr council
24:15i have a special task for you i hear that you're quite the speed reader and in the time that i've
24:21known you you've shown well on occasion an exceptional attention to detail that's the first time you've
24:28ever paid me a compliment what we've conducted over a hundred interviews so far someone needs to
24:35review them swiftly looking for information that can help us id our suspect and i believe you're my best
24:41man i think she's finally starting to like me no i'm not
24:50good morning morning any breaks in the case no i'm pouring over these witness statements looking for
25:08clues about our bomber but so far nothing well maybe these will bring you some luck
25:13these are emergency cheering up pancakes i mean these are usually reserved for after breakups or
25:21dancing with the stars eliminations what's the occasion well after the other day i thought we both
25:26needed some cheering up
25:31you shouldn't need cheering up you shouldn't have even been there you should have been with your friends or
25:36at the movies dad i'm 18. i know i know it's just
25:41you're gonna see plenty of reality in your lifetime i just would like you to keep the rose color in your
25:47glasses for as long as possible i'm trying not to focus on the ugly side of it dad
25:55i've gotten straight a's awards more trophies than i can count this job is the first thing that's made
26:03me feel like i'm doing something important valuable i mean isn't that why you do it
26:12you're a pretty smart kid you know that well they say genius skips a generation apparently so does funny
26:22eat your pancake
26:31becky
26:39what's going on um nothing i'm just thinking about my next move i may have it for you we got a line on
26:45this guy someone id the sketch yeah protester named jenny klein says she knows this guy as bobby
26:50there's no last name no but this bobby invited her over once she knows where he lives
27:02hey bobby remove the backpack and place it on the ground slowly then get on your knees
27:18just a bunch of gym clothes and some water bottles not like last time huh bob
27:26robert lopez that's your name right bobby
27:42actually i know quite a bit about you
27:45i know where you live i know you don't have a record i know you're not a member of any political party
27:50and as soon as my team finishes searching your place i'm going to know even more
27:55eventually i'll find out but why don't you just tell me
27:59why did you plant that bomb
28:04hey no luck with those witness statements you guys catch a break better yet we caught the suspect
28:17and i missed it where is he in the box with beckett would you like me to refresh your memory
28:22you were standing here by the lamp post you dropped the backpack and then you started running as it
28:31exploded and killed five people i didn't do what you're saying witnesses saw you drop your backpack bobby
28:37it wasn't mine well so you admit to having it no that's that's not what i meant you said that it
28:41wasn't yours because you got me all confused didn't you have it it's a simple question i don't know
28:47who put you up to this bobby who gave you that backpack i don't i don't know i don't remember
28:51you don't remember how do you not remember i was in shock the bomb went off everyone was running and
28:56screaming oh okay okay so you remember what happened after the bomb went off but not before it must have
29:01been one of those traumatic amnesia bobby don't lie to me i'm telling you it was all a big blank it was
29:07the trauma it was not the trauma you don't get to use that excuse i swear i don't remember the hell you
29:12don't remember do you want to know trauma i was shot in the chest and i remember every second of it
29:22and so do you
29:28all this time
29:33you remembered
29:42guys still not talking not yet i'm gonna let him sweat for a bit
29:49was castle here yeah earlier but he said he had to go so there was somewhere he needed to be
29:59oh richard really a bomb memorial come on honey isn't this kind of morbid that's how i'm feeling
30:07she isn't dead she might as well be i really thought we could have a future together you know i
30:13was i was willing to wait
30:18didn't find out it's all just a big joke
30:19she knew this whole time she remembered and she didn't say anything
30:28she was embarrassed because she doesn't feel the same way i'm such a fool
30:33well come on let's go home break out some of the good stuff okay well i'd love to i gotta be getting
30:48back back back that why on earth would you go back knowing how she feels knowing that she lied to you
30:55this isn't about her this is this is about them you know it's about doing something real
31:02there's something that matters i'm not willing to let that go
31:12richard love is not a switch you can't just turn it off you can't work
31:16side by side with her and not feel anything watch me
31:31hey hey where are you just clearing my head where are we on bobby uniforms are searching his place
31:38we're hoping to find something that'll break him fbi called with an update the device we're using
31:44boiling plaza was a pipe bomb here's the weird part it wasn't packed with nails ball bearings or
31:49anything else that is weird bombers usually add projectiles to maximize damage that's not the only
31:53way to maximize damage so what was it triggered by cell phone tripwire a remote probably rigged from
32:00a garage door opener but the range on those is only about 100 feet so whoever detonated it was in
32:05boiling plaza and i bet you will find that garage remote in bobby's apartment ah no such luck but we
32:10did find credit cards with lots of different names on them and we found some wallets and some cell
32:17phones too in fact one of those cell phones belonged to andrew haynes bobby's a pickpocket yeah i pretty
32:25much am that's why you attended the takeover protests all these people hanging out full of peace and
32:30brotherhood hey hey nimrod here educate yourself here like all you can steal buffet you got that
32:45right why didn't you just tell me the truth from the start and what admit to a cop that likes me for
32:50murder that i'm a thief and they just seem like the better plan yeah so you looked at andrew haynes's
32:57phone which is why i looked as if he planted the ball who's andrew haynes don't worry about that
33:01talk to me about the backpack how did you get it i lifted it it was just lying there between two
33:15dumpsters hey hey that's mine hey that's mine that's my back hey hey hey that's my back
33:26come back come back here hey hey you
33:33oh maybe you can hire that guy's band
33:45i swear i didn't know what bomb was in it i would never hurt anyone but you gotta believe me
33:56the man who said that you took his backpack
34:00is that him yeah that's that's the guy are you sure yeah yeah that's him that's jesse friedman
34:10he's one of the victims and he's a member of the movement doesn't make any sense why would he
34:16attack his old people
34:28okay thank you so uni searched jesse friedman's place and they found research on how to build the
34:52same device that was used in boyland plaza so jesse blew up his old protest why would he do
34:57that maybe to get sympathy for his movement publicity and since he placed the bomb between
35:02two dumpsters he didn't think that anyone get hurt then bobby stole the backpack if jesse was
35:07worried about someone getting hurt why would he sell off the bomb i don't think he did there was
35:11no remote found on or near the body which means someone else detonated probably somebody he knew
35:1630 seconds before the blast jesse got a call on his cell from a burner phone then two seconds before
35:21the bomb went off he tried to call that same phone back so maybe jesse had a partner and that's who
35:26triggered the bomb you said that remote had a range of about 100 feet right so whoever the
35:32partner was he must have been here somewhere close to the bomb blast hidden among the crowd
35:38we need to take another look at the sequence of events piece together the witness statements
35:42the answer is in the story so let's start the beginning
35:46leanne and her cameraman are setting up for their live broadcast make sure you get the crowd in the
35:56background mark another shot of you and the chanting masses i'm so over this protest yeah next time we'll do
36:02a piece on brazilian runway models i promise i'm gonna hold you to that all right let's roll this puppy
36:07at the same time bobby's prowling the plaza he sees andrew haynes haranguing the protesters put the pity
36:16party pull yourself up by the bootstrip hey nimrod here educate yourself here why don't you give this a
36:22brief hey geranimal pants he's easy pickings here educate so bobby relieves him of his phone
36:29educate yourself would you then bobby goes looking for his next business opportunity
36:36he spots the blue backpack unattended calling out to her
36:39so he grabs it blissfully unaware of what's inside
36:46hey hey that's mine but jesse sees him and he flips out that's mine
36:52give that back hey hey that's mine bobby ducks out of sight jesse panics the bomb is on the move
37:02what's he gonna do people are in danger he grabs a man in a black hoodie thinking it's a thief
37:08what's your problem you don't like what i have to say sorry can't face the truth but it's andrew haynes
37:13well by now bobby's decided taking the backpack wasn't such a good idea
37:18so he ditches it and keeps moving could you imagine the look on mom's face
37:25bam they bump into each other drawing the attention of the street drummer who's now by the coffee truck
37:38the subscriber you are trying to reach is not available
37:41he's too late
37:45that's a nice story bro but it still doesn't tell us who jesse's partner is
37:49well it's got to be whoever jesse was on the phone with in the minutes before the bomb went off
37:53how long was that first incoming call
37:54uh eight seconds
37:56so that was probably the all systems go call
37:58then after the backpack was stolen jesse tried to make an all systems not go call
38:02but he didn't get through in time
38:04do any of the witnesses remember who jesse was hanging out with
38:07not yet but we're still reconstructing his movements based on statements from his friends
38:11a beethoven t-shirt
38:13call and response
38:19i know who jesse's partner is
38:21bobby remembered hearing a beethoven ringtone coming from nearby just before he stole the backpack
38:30and west side walley said beethoven showed up conducting his fifth symphony
38:34we're good to go
38:36that was actually jesse friedman with his beethoven t-shirt and ringtone making his all systems go call
38:42we're good to go
38:42we know that he was talking to someone within 100 feet
38:45and that call lasted eight seconds
38:47long enough for a call and response
38:49a call and response to the one person who could broadcast the explosion live on television
38:54and bring the publicity that the movement needed
38:56we're good to go
38:57i'm here at boylan plaza on day 36 of the takeover protest
39:12bianne west was on the other end of that phone
39:15no i wasn't
39:18i wasn't on the phone with anyone i was talking to my cameraman
39:21i already told the fbi the whole story
39:23yeah except you left out a few details
39:25like the fact that you knew jesse friedman the two of you went to hudson university
39:29yeah so did a lot of people
39:31we're guessing the two of you reunited at the protest
39:34you went out for drinks and you hatched a plan
39:36you wanted media attention for the movement
39:38you wanted to get promoted to the anchor desk
39:40so you set up your cameras at the perfect vantage point
39:42you waited until you went live and you detonated that bomb
39:45what?
39:47that is insane
39:48this is ridiculous and i will not listen to another word of it
39:52we're done here
39:53do you recognize that?
39:55that's the burner cell that you used to call jesse
39:57found it in a storm drain about two blocks from boylan plaza
40:00you know what else we found in there?
40:05the remote you used to detonate the bomb
40:06small enough to hide in the palm of your hand
40:08it's got your fingerprints all over it, leanne
40:10how did you find that?
40:11by tracking your movements after the explosion
40:13using your phone's gps
40:14no one was supposed to get hurt
40:19it was just going to make a lot of noise
40:21and people would start respecting me as a reporter
40:23but everything just went wrong
40:25why didn't you come forward once you realized what you had done?
40:27i thought about it but what good would that do?
40:29i kept quiet for jesse
40:32i wanted to protect his memory
40:36well that's what your friend jesse would call sinning by silence
40:42it's not smart
40:44it's not brave
40:46it's just cowardly
40:48the fbi has taken leanne west into custody
40:57this woman whose blind ambition
41:01led to the death of five people
41:02will get what she deserves
41:04i um
41:06i want to thank
41:09each of you for what you did to make this happen
41:11you um
41:13all
41:14put in 110%
41:17made me proud
41:18so let's uh
