95_WHAT IS PERSONALITY AND HOW IS IT FORMED ?
Transcript
00:00What is personality and how is it formed? Who am I? What makes me me and you you?
00:05From the moment we're born, we begin a journey of self-discovery,
00:09collecting experiences, emotions and knowledge that shape the person we become.
00:13But what exactly is personality? Is it something we are born with?
00:18Or does the world around us mold us like clay, shaping our thoughts, desires and beliefs?
00:23In this journey of exploration, we will dive deep into the nature of personality,
00:27what it is, how it is formed, and whether it is truly ours.
00:32Or simply a reflection of the forces acting upon us, the illusion of the self,
00:36are we born with a personality? Imagine a newborn child, eyes wide open seeing the world for the
00:42first time, does this child already have a personality? Or is it a blank slate?
00:47Waiting to be written upon by life itself? Some philosophers and scientists argue that
00:52we are born as Tabula rasa, a blank slate, with no inherent traits, only the potential
00:57to develop. According to this view, our personality is not something we are born with,
01:02but something that emerges as we grow, shaped by our experiences, culture and interactions with the
01:08world. But is that entirely true? Modern psychology suggests that we do not start as empty vessels,
01:14even as newborns, we have differences in temperament, some babies are naturally calm,
01:20while others cry often and react strongly to new stimuli. This suggests that personality is not entirely
01:26formed by the world and is also influenced by something deeper, something we carry within
01:31us from the very beginning. Could it be that personality is a delicate balance between what
01:36we are born with and what life imposes upon us? The building blocks of personality nature versus
01:42nurture scientists have long debated what shapes our personality more our genes nature or our environment
01:48nurture. The truth, as it often is, seems to lie somewhere in between. One genetic influence are we
01:55predisposed to be who we are. It is uneniable that some aspects of our personality are written in our
02:01DNA. Studies of identical twins who share the same genetic material but grow up in different environments
02:07show remarkable similarities in their behaviors, preferences and even fears. For example, two identical
02:14twins separated at birth might grow up to prefer the same types of music, have similar careers or even laugh
02:20at the same kind of jokes. This suggests that certain personality traits such as introversion,
02:26extroversion and even risk-taking tendencies are hardwired into us from birth.
02:31But if genetics define everything, why do siblings raised in the same household often have completely
02:37different personalities? Why does one child grow up to be adventurous while another prefers solitude?
02:43This is where the power of nurture comes into environmental influence. The world as a
02:47sculptor imagine a garden where seeds are planted. Each seed carries its own potential, but the soil,
02:54the amount of sunlight and the care given to each plant determine how we will grow. Our environment
03:00works in the same way, the way we are raised, the people we meet and the challenges we face all
03:05shade our personality. A child raised in a loving and supportive home may develop confidence and optimism,
03:12while a child exposed to constant criticism may grow up struggling with self-doubt. Culture too,
03:17plays a powerful role, in some societies, be outspoken and individualistic is encouraged.
03:24While in others, modesty and harmony with the group are valued more, the same person born in two
03:30different cultures may develop into two completely different personalities. Does this mean we are simply
03:36products of our surroundings or is there something deeper that makes us who we are? The role of
03:41experience the stories that shape us every experience we have leaves a mark on us. Some experiences are
03:47like raindrops barely noticed, while others are like storms reshaping the landscape of our minds forever.
03:54When childhood the foundation of personality the first years of our lives are the most crucial.
04:00As children were like sponges, absorbing everything love, fear, praise, rejection. These early moments
04:06create the foundation of our personality. A child who grows up feeling safe and supported may develop
04:12a personality that is open and trusting. Meanwhile, a child who experiences neglect or trauma may become
04:19guarded, cautious or rebellious. 2. Adolescence
04:22The time of transformation Adolescence is a period of self-discovery. We begin to question who we are,
04:29where we belong, and what we stand for, during this time. Friendship's social influences and personal
04:35struggles shape our identity. This is when many people develop passions, interests and beliefs that
04:41will stay with them for life. Some find meaning in art, others in science or philosophy, some become
04:47leaders. While others prefer to remain observers, but even beyond childhood and adolescence, our personality
04:54is not fixed, it continues to evolve throughout our lives. 3. Adulthood and beyond
04:59Can we change? Is personality something that stays the same forever, or can we change who we are?
05:05Neuros-defectant studies suggest that while some core traits remain stable, our personality is flexible.
05:12A once shy and introverted person can, through life experiences, become more outgoing. A carefree
05:18individual can become more serious after facing hardships. This means that we are never truly
05:23trapped by who we are. With effort, awareness and time, we can shape ourselves into the people we wish
05:29to become. The illusion of a fixed self are we one person or many? If personality can change,
05:35then what does that say about the idea of a fixed self? Think about it, are you the same person you were
05:4110 years ago? Will you be the same person 10 years from now? Some philosophers argue that we are not
05:47one person but a collection of selves that change over time. The child you once were is gone. The
05:52person you will be in old age does not yet exist. So, who is the real you? Is personality just an
05:59illusion, a story we tell ourselves to create the feeling of identity? The final mystery, can we ever
06:04truly know ourselves? We spend our lives searching for meaning, trying to understand ourselves and those
06:10around us. But can we ever fully grasp who we are? Or is personality something fluid, ever-changing,
06:17impossible to define completely? Perhaps the answer is this personality is not a thing we have but the
06:23journey we take. It is the sum of our choices, experiences and transformations. Is both inherited
06:30and shaped, fixed yet flexible, a paradox that makes us uniquely human? And maybe, just maybe,
06:36the greatest adventure of all is not discovering the universe but discovering ourselves. So,
06:41what do you think? Are we born with a personality? Or do we create it? And most importantly,
06:47can we ever truly know who we are?
