00:00There was a lot of concern leading up to this summit and that was that the U.S. wouldn't
00:07recognize NATO's joint defense pack. Have those fears now pretty much been squashed?
00:16Well, we heard President Trump, Leanne, referring to that joint defense in his comments that
00:24you've played just there. And that was the big concern leading into this NATO summit.
00:29It circles around Article 5. That is the joint defense pact of NATO, that an attack on one
00:36is an attack on all. Now, President Trump has made no secret of his skepticism of these
00:42multinational groupings such as NATO. It simply doesn't fit with his America first standing.
00:50So when he was asked on Air Force One on his journey into the Hague whether the U.S. would
00:57come to Europe's defense, he was pretty vague. He said there's a lot of ways you can interpret
01:04Article 5. And that really struck fear into the hearts of leaders and the defense ministers
01:11of the other NATO countries. So it was with a big sigh of relief that the countries heard
01:17the U.S. president recommit to Article 5. He's said things during his closing press conference.
01:25He said that he is viewing the alliance a little differently now.
