Zoran Mamdani has won the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor with 43.5% of the vote. Donald Trump launched a furious attack on Mamdani, calling him '100% communist' and a 'lunatic'. Mamdani's campaign focused on affordability issues in the city, including rent freezes, free buses, and universal childcare. If elected, he would become the first Indian-American and Muslim mayor of New York City.

00:00international arena, in fact specifically to the United States of America, Donald Trump
00:04launched a furious attack on Zohran Mandani after the Democratic Socialist won the NYC's
00:11mayoral primary. Now as former New York governor Andrew Cuomo conceded New York City's Democratic
00:17mayoral primary election, Mandani won 43.5% of the vote with 90% of ballots counted. Trump
00:25called Mandani 100% communist, lunatic and mocked him. Trump has also criticized other leaders who
00:31support Mandani including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in another post. He in fact mocked
00:38the Democratic Party's performance, claimed that and I quote, if Zohran Mandani becomes the future
00:44communist mayor of New York City then the country is really screwed. With that we are in fact being
00:52joined by our colleague Root Sharma on broadcast. Root a very good morning to you. You know very
00:58firstly Trump is jittery after the Democratic mayoral candidate Mandani's win at the NYC primary
01:04ballot. How do we expect Trump's attacks on Mandani to in fact affect the mayoral polls in New York
01:11City? Can it in fact backfire at this point? Well look you know I don't think President Trump would
01:18have been even a fan of the other candidate who was on the ballot which is Andrew Cuomo and him and
01:26Andrew Cuomo you know created a lot of bobs during COVID in 2020 when Andrew Cuomo was the governor
01:33of New York. So I think you know taking a taking these or making these attacks on Mandani is there's a
01:43reason for it. I don't think he wants to see another progressive mayor of New York City and now
01:51the reason I say that is because the current mayor of New York City Eric Adams was a Democrat. He
01:57recently became an independent and he's going to be in the election fighting this election against
02:03Mandani. Eric Adams a Democrat through and through you know had a fallout with President Biden last
02:11year. He criticized President Biden's immigration policies. He said you know the the housing of
02:18undocumented immigrants and inflow of undocumented immigrants caused a lot of stress on New York City
02:25and its residents and he was indicted you know in some corrupt cases. Suddenly Donald Trump wins the
02:35presidency. The cases against Eric Adams get dropped. He becomes independent and his you know platform has move
02:43more towards center if not completely towards center right. So I think President Donald Trump knowing the
02:50history of New York and that you know the fact that anybody who wins the primary from the Democratic Party goes on to
02:58win the general election is possibly looking at Mandani becoming the next mayor of New York City and the he's
03:06criticizing the platform on which Mandani has run which is left progressive you know somebody who's talked about
03:14how New York City should have grocery shops they should have price control the left progressive policies that
03:21President Donald Trump completely you know loads. So it is going to be an interesting mayoral race.
03:29It could backfire or in the sense that this guy overwhelmingly won the primary and you know New York is known to be
03:38a very very very very blue state and New York City is a very blue city.
03:42So it could it could. We do not know we live in a very you know especially in America we've been living in
03:49unrealistic times when it comes to making political predictions.
03:54But for sure I think this is this is the beginning of attacks and Eric Adams would like to see some of these attacks
04:01against Mandani from President Trump and you know his his surrogates so that it gives Eric Adams at least a chance
04:09in the general election in November.
04:12Zoran Mamdani has won the Democratic nomination for the mayor of New York City.
04:19His triumph over Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary represents more than just an electoral win
04:25but also reflects the space for progressive politics in a city known for its entrenched power structures.
04:33We made history.
04:34In the words of Nelson Mandela
04:41It always seems impossible until it is done.
04:50My friends
04:53We have done it.
04:5333 year old Mamdani was labeled as merely a Muslim socialist with radical ideas but he ran a relentlessly
05:14of the government campaign built around cost of living issues zeroing in on essentials such as housing, transport,
05:21childcare and groceries.
05:23and groceries.
05:24His campaign centered on the message that voters in the most expensive U.S. city want Democrats to focus
05:32on affordability.
05:33My name is Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani and I am running to make the city affordable.
05:39I'll freeze the rent for millions of tenants, make buses fast and free and deliver universal child care.
05:45And before you ask, I'll pay for it by taxing the rich.
05:47Mamdani has also been an outspoken critic of Israel's attack on Gaza.
05:53But beyond his messaging, Mamdani's political sway was rooted in fluency of language, clarity of purpose
06:01and the ability to speak convincingly to voters from many different backgrounds.
06:05I'm not sure what I'm going to do but what I'm going to do but what I'm going to do.
06:12For our communities and for every New Yorker, I will make our city affordable.
06:17The New Yorkers are offering food, clothes, clothes and buildings.
06:21I'm fighting for changing this all.
06:23Rent-free, free buses, universal child care and gross groceries.
06:28Mamdani's win appears, a result of him reaching out to young, working-class voters who felt
06:34alienated by the Democratic Party. But his political momentum will now be tested against Eric Adams.
06:43If elected, Zohran will become the first Indian American and the first Muslim mayor of New York.
06:51Pores suggest that given his lead, his win on the final ballot is likely.
06:58Mamdani faces an enormous responsibility, not only of New York City,
07:03but also of a broader progressive movement.
