Trump stirs controversy as he casts doubt over US commitment to NATO mutual defence guarantee

The US president was praised in a warm welcome by Dutch King Willem-Alexander and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in a dinner with other NATO leaders at the royal palace in The Hague.

00:00U.S. President Donald Trump arrived at the Royal Palace in The Hague where he will be staying for
00:07the NATO summit. He was warmly welcomed by the Netherlands King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima
00:12as they convened with other NATO leaders for a dinner. Speaking at the dinner, the Dutch monarch
00:18urged Trump to continue standing by Ukraine, reminding him of the grave threat Russia poses
00:23to NATO. Mr. President, it means so much to us to welcome you in our home tonight. We cherish
00:31the bonds of friendship that will always unite our nations. And Ukraine, which for years has
00:37been embroiled in a daily struggle, making great sacrifices to defend its freedoms and
00:43ours, is welcome too. The people of Ukraine, with whom we feel such close ties, deserve
00:50our continuing support." This year's summit is dubbed as one of the most significant
00:55in years. Leaders are expected to decide on a crucial proposal to increase defense spending
01:01from current targets of 2 percent of GDP to 5 percent. The proposal comes after months of
01:07Trump's pressure and threats of pulling the U.S. out of NATO if other members don't, quote,
01:12step up.
01:35But Trump continued to court controversy even aboard Air Force One on his way to the summit. The
01:40U.S. President renewed doubts over Washington's commitment to the alliance as he made cryptic
01:45remarks regarding NATO's mutual defense clause.
01:49Questioned by reporters on his commitment to NATO's Article 5, Trump said,
01:53There is numerous definitions, but I'm committed to being their friend.
