00:00The Pelicans and the Wizards get together on this one.
00:04And, Grandy, hit me if I've got any of the particulars wrong.
00:07C.J. McCollum, Kelly Olenek, and a second-round pick in exchange for Jordan Poole,
00:15Sadiq Bae, and another second-round pick.
00:18Just one of them is this year, maybe one of them is next year, right?
00:21Sounds about right.
00:23Sadiq Bae did not play this year, torn ACL.
00:26Sadiq Bae changes teams every four months.
00:30He is involved in more deals.
00:32Wasn't he a warrior for like five minutes last offseason?
00:36On Twitter he was.
00:36Okay.
00:37He was a Twitter warrior.
00:38Yeah, before we knew that he was getting rerouted, he was in that Wiseman GP2 trade.
00:44So he was a warrior, and then he wasn't a warrior, but I actually think it was all one thing.
00:49But Twitter thought he was a warrior for about seven minutes.
00:52Yeah, Grandy, what's up?
00:53Yeah, that's correct.
00:54But the Pelicans is a future second-round pick to the Wizards.
00:58The Wizards are sending the 40th pick in this draft to New Orleans.
01:03So, yes.
01:03Okay.
01:04So this year versus next year.
01:06My favorite thing about this trade is the same thing that I would say about Kyle Shanahan.
01:12And here's where I'm going.
01:15I love it when the league tells you what they think about something versus what the rest of the world thinks about something.
01:28Because those things don't always match.
01:30And I think that that's interesting.
01:32I think that's interesting.
01:33The league just expressed to you, and yet another franchise expressed to you, and there are warrior fans out there who I think could benefit by hearing this, just expressed to you, yet again, what they think about Jordan Poole.
01:47And I get all of the background here, believe me.
01:52He will always, and I get it, he will always be a sympathetic figure in this city because of the way it went down.
01:59But I also think that far too many warrior fans still believe that Jordan Poole is not on the team because Draymond Green punched him, and therefore people couldn't get along and they had to get him out of town.
02:13I've never believed that that was the story.
02:15I believe that he's out of town because the likes of Steph Curry and others felt that they would be a better basketball team going forward, number one.
02:25And number two, the same thing that the Wizards told you today.
02:30We look, and what's the number?
02:32It's in the neighborhood of $30 million?
02:34This year it is, absolutely.
02:35The Wizards, just like the Warriors told you, with that $30 million salary slot, we would like to turn that into air as quickly as possible.
02:47Cap space, if you will.
02:49We would rather have that than have Jordan Poole.
02:53That's what the Warriors did, and that's what the Wizards just did.
02:57And the league is telling you what they think of Jordan Poole.
03:03And I don't think it matches with what a lot of Warrior fans still think of Jordan Poole and the romanticism of him because of the way things went down.
03:13Understandable.
03:13And, you know, if you're the Pelicans, you look at this trade and you think, okay, we would rather have Jordan Poole for two years and see if it works.
03:22And Sadiq Bae is also a young player, even though he's coming off a torn ACL, so you're New Orleans and you have an opportunity to offload C.J. McCollum, who only had one year left.
03:33And in exchange, you get a young player, Jordan Poole, who might be a good fit for you.
03:37So for New Orleans, for me anyway, it's a pretty low-risk move.
03:42It's only two years of Jordan Poole.
03:44And you get Sadiq Bae, and I think he only has one more year on his deal.
03:47And you offload C.J. McCollum, who was not somebody who was really factoring in what you were trying to do in New Orleans.
03:55The head-scratcher for me is Washington.
03:57It's already a wave of the white flag for this upcoming year.
04:01They're basically saying, we can't wait to get that juicy cap space after one more year.
04:07And Neemar McCollum, he's a player, but Washington's got pretty much nothing else.
04:11You already got rid of Kuzma, and now you bring in McCollum, and you get rid of Jordan Poole.
04:16You clear the decks, and you tank, and you get a bunch of space.
04:21Sure.
04:21I don't know what their other option was.
04:23It's not like they were in a position to do anything about it coming this year.
04:26That's fair.
04:27And I do think that looking at the league, that's one of the bigger problems is, you know,
04:31it's not even teams tanking once the year starts.
04:34Now we're tanking a year in advance.
04:37And Travis Schlenk is in the front office, and so he probably looks at this and says,
04:41what you're talking about, Mark, we don't have any other real options.
04:45So let's just strip this thing down to the studs and, you know, play a year with McCollum
04:51and see if we can't get a nice high lottery pick and then turn that thing around and maybe
04:55make a move.
04:55I am fascinating to me because of how many times, no joke here, in the last six months
05:00as the Warriors tried to become a playoff team, tried to become relevant again, tried
05:06to maneuver, tried to, quote, maximize the remainder of Steph Curry's career, how many
05:11times did we hear someone go, God, isn't it funny?
05:14The type of player they need is, you know, like a Jordan Poole type.
05:20Like, we heard that all the time.
05:23And look, if that's your opinion, that can be your opinion.
05:27I just, I find today fascinating for two reasons.
05:31One is the league is telling you that they feel very differently about this player than
05:37some fans do.
05:38And then the other thing that pops into my head is what you kind of brought up on the
05:42crossover.
05:42I don't know that I understand this CBA.
05:45Like, I get it.
05:46I can read.
05:47I understand.
05:48But I don't know if you're getting the desired consequences.
05:52The draft is not here yet.
05:53Free agency is not here yet.
05:55And we have seen no fewer than five, six big names switch teams.
06:01And I don't know that all of the trades, in fact, I'd argue the majority of the teams
06:08that are involved in those trades from one side or the other, their motivation is financial.
06:14And that's it.
06:15It's not like, Boston, I don't think is like, you know what we need to get over the top is
06:21is Anfernee Simons.
06:22That's not what Boston's thinking.
06:25Boston is thinking our best players hurt.
06:27Let's get some of this money out of here.
06:29This is too much.
06:31So, right, we signed Tatum, we signed Brown.
06:33Now some of the Tatum money is going to be lost.
06:35Yep, poor Zingas.
06:36Yeah, poor Zingas.
06:37We got to clear the books.
06:39Aprons.
06:40That's what Boston's thinking.
06:41And I think that that sucks.
06:43Yeah.
06:43They're the Boston Celtics.
06:45I want teams like the Celtics.
06:47I mean, Warriors, Lakers, if not all teams.
06:50I want them motivated by how are we really good at basketball next year.
06:55But that's not what these teams are doing.
06:56And also, how can we, like, keep our core guys?
07:00And I made this list about two or three months ago anticipating these days.
07:05Because I was writing down the teams that have three or more players making $30 million or more.
07:11And if you run down this list, you're finding these teams are the ones that have made these trades.
07:15Boston had four players in that category.
07:18Houston had three.
07:19They've made a deal.
07:20New Orleans had three.
07:21They made a deal.
07:22Phoenix had three, of course.
07:24They've made a deal.
07:25And on and on it goes.
07:26You've got Toronto, the Knicks, the 76ers, even Denver today talking about, well, I mean, it's not a good question.
07:33I mean, they're just words.
07:36But even that being spoke into significance and into existence that, you know, the Nuggets aren't totally closing the door on trading Nikola Jokic, the best player on the planet.
07:47And it's because they, too, have three guys making $30 or more million.
07:50Just to throw out there, because I'm sure there's probably people at work that just went, wait, what?
07:55What?
07:55Yeah.
07:56What did you do?
07:56The Denver Nuggets are talking about trading Jokic, their owner today, in front of a microphone, which was the mistake.
08:03You can think this.
08:04Just don't say it in a microphone.
08:05He basically was talking about the CBA.
08:08And to summarize it, he's essentially saying, look, if you spend this much on too many players and then one of them gets hurt,
08:17you're immediately then kicking into the unthinkable, which would be trading number 15.
08:23And he's talking about Jokic.
08:25This is it.
08:25His name is Josh Kroenke.
08:27Take a listen.
08:28For us as an organization, going into that second apron is not necessarily something that we're scared of.
08:34I think that there are rules around it that we needed to be very careful of with our injury history.
08:38The wrong person gets injured and very quickly you're into a scenario where that I never want to have to contemplate.
08:44And that's trading number 15.
08:44You know, we're very conscious of that pushing forward and, you know, providing the resources that we can when the moment arrives.
08:52But that second apron, is it a hard cap?
08:55I'm not 100% sure.
08:56But it's something that teams are obviously very aware of going forward.
09:00Okay.
09:00So, and again, he knows the rules.
09:03He's not saying, I'm not sure if it's a hard cap.
09:06I think he's basically, the question probably was something along the lines of, are you treating that second apron as a hard cap?
09:14So, look, this is boring to me.
09:20That's honestly what I want to tell the NBA.
09:23There's not a damn fan out there that can tell you what the apron is.
09:26Or how much it is.
09:27Or what are the penalties and all the rest of it.
09:29They don't know what the number is.
09:31They don't care.
09:32They don't understand the rules behind it.
09:34This is driving the league right now.
09:37And it's boring.
09:39And it's a mistake if that's what you were trying to do.
09:43I think.
09:43I agree.
09:44And it makes it so you have to explain to people, why did you just trade Drew Holiday?
09:48Well, it's because of the second apron.
09:50Like, I thought you liked Holiday.
09:52I thought he was a good player.
09:53Well, yeah, he's got to go because he makes too much and we can't afford to get into that second apron.
09:58What?
