At least 120 children have been kidnapped by jihadist insurgents in northern Mozambique in recent days, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday, warning of a rise in abductions in the country's troubled Cabo Delgado province.

00:00At least 120 children in northern Mozambique have been kidnapped by jihadist insurgent group Al-Shabaab,
00:07international NGO Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday.
00:11The children are reportedly being used to transport stolen goods, perform forced labor,
00:16and in some cases serve as child soldiers or be forced into marriage.
00:21Mozambique has been battling the Islamist insurgency in Cabo Delgado province since 2017.
00:27In 2020, the insurgents carried out a wave of attacks, during which they beheaded dozens of people, including children.
00:36Government forces have struggled to contain the violence, relying on support from troops sent by Rwanda, South Africa, and other regional partners.
00:45The violence has displaced more than 600,000 people and spilled into neighboring provinces, according to the United Nations.
00:53Human Rights Watch says there's been a resurgence of attacks and child kidnappings in recent months
00:59and called on Mozambique's government to do more to find the children and prevent further abductions.
