00:16In 2018, Depp filed a libel lawsuit against The Sun after the British tabloid magazine called him a, quote, wife beater.
00:24The actor lost the case as the court ruled in the 2020 trial that The Sun's characterization was substantially true.
00:31In 2019, Depp also sued Heard for defamation over an op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post in which she called herself, quote, a figure representing domestic abuse.
00:41Following the live televised 2022 trial, a jury ultimately found Heard liable on all three counts of defamation.
00:48Heard also won one of the three claims in her countersuit.
00:51In his new interview, Depp opened up about why he took Heard to court.
