New York and Philadelphia could surpass record highs set more than a century ago this week.
Transcript
00:00170 million Americans are sweating it out early this week with record
00:03challenging heat and this heat wave is complete with AccuWeather real field
00:07temperatures topping 100 degrees in dozens of states from the plains to the
00:11Northeast. And this extreme heat is being driven by a massive dome of high
00:15pressure along with storms firing up along its edge. Look for damaging wind
00:20gusts, flash flooding, and even the threat for a derecho to possibly hit
00:24parts of the Midwest and the Northeast throughout midweek. We'll have much more
00:27on that coming up just ahead but right now it's going to take a live look at
00:30Boston and Jeff this has been one of the areas that's been kind of shielded from
00:34the oppressive heat across the Northeast. Yeah it was real hot there yesterday it's
00:38going to be really hot tomorrow but in the short term that breeze from the east
00:41kind of variable in direction keeping you in the lower 80s right now but it's
00:46been a story of opposing extremes record highs and record lows broken today. We
00:51hit 101 in Newark, 99 in Philadelphia in both cases eking past records set just
00:57last year on June 23rd of last year. Same date. Now we also had record lows for
01:02the date. Billings got down to 41 this morning. Old record low was 43 from 1951
01:061960. Sheridan, Wyoming you got down to 35. The previous record low for the date
01:11was 38 degrees from the 1960s. Tide more recently in 1989. We blasted past that
01:17record on the cold side but certainly the heat is the bigger story in terms of human
01:21impact, danger. There's a lot of danger associated with heat and there are many
01:25areas with power outages. Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. Between these
01:29states here we have about 75,000 addresses. A little more than that closer to a
01:33hundred thousand addresses without power. Not a good time if you are reliant on air
01:38conditioning. There are pockets of the Northeast where the climate may be a
01:41little cooler and there are some who don't have air conditioning but if you're
01:44near I-95 and you really rely on that and you lose electricity there were some
01:48outages near Philadelphia today. Not a good time for that. 76 in Portland enjoy that but look at this Boston with a wind variable at the airport.
01:54We're back up to 87 matching New York City right now. 97 in DC. We were at 98 an hour ago in Burlington but now DC stands among the hottest on that particular map, still upper 90s in Philadelphia.
02:07Record challenging heat migrates east here. One of the dangers of this heat wave is that we'll have very warm overnight lows. The weather matrix, Jesse Farrell pointing out that for the first time in the record books, State College had 90 degrees for its noon observation.
02:23Noon observation in the month of June. We've done it in July at noon but that's early in the day to hit 90 in State College PA in the month of June.
02:32How about that? So Tuesday, more heat. Damien is going to be really sweltering.
02:37Areas like Richmond down into Elizabeth City. Accuade with a real field temperature is 110 to 115 tomorrow.
02:43And there are some more records tomorrow. DC should do it. Philly should tie. New York and Boston should break new record highs.
02:48Thank you for being here for this, we're because of October 22, 2020.
02:53Thank you again.
02:55The hope for this week is to take about 1 or 3 minutes to get a chance.
02:57Make sure you make sure you are ready to pull up your hand up to the next one.
