The Mexican government's innovative cultural initiative “Mexico Canta y Encanta” has reached its national semi-finals, with more than 15,000 young contestants from Mexico and the United States competing to promote non-violent narratives through music. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, the contest challenges participants to create original songs that celebrate tradition, peace and gender equality, against the glorification of violence in genres such as corridos tumbados.

00:00As part of a comprehensive strategy of the Mexican government to combat violence through culture and to influence new narratives that exalt traditions, life and popular art, the Mexico Canta y Encanta contest advances to its next selection stage.
00:14Antonio Aranda brings us more details.
00:20Mexico Canta y Encanta is more than a musical contest for young talents.
00:25It is a part of the comprehensive strategy to generate a culture of peace in the country.
00:30At the close of the call for entries, more than 15,000 young people from Mexico and the United States participate with teams that do not advocate violence, said the Mexican Secretary of Culture.
00:42From culture, this generates other creative platforms for young people to detonate talents that have not been heard and also to bring narratives that allows these young creators to talk about other things without us having to induce what they can talk about.
01:00Whatever they want, without denigrating women, without advocating violence.
01:04The second phase of the competition is the first classification, after which the finalists will be accompanied by professionals from the international music industry.
01:18Three hundred sixty-five classifieds will be announced on July 4th, the morning, and then 48 will come from the hands of industry professionals who are those who are recorded.
01:33A number of composers will participate, the most important composers of our country, who were there at the conference and who will professionally accompany the classifieds so that the day they present themselves there will be a professional accompaniment.
01:46The Mexico Canta Contest also seeks to generate new talents that recover the national musical culture with messages different from the musical genre, so-called corridos tumbados, that glorify violence.
02:03What has generated that the corridos tumbados, that music, is in the first places in the world, is that, for example, the corridos tumbados have a mix with the urban, to which much younger generations have given a very interesting twist, mainly in the musical part.
02:21It will now be easy to promote new talents, but there is a positive attempt to renew the narratives, considers these journalists with 35 years of experience in regional Mexican music.
02:37The positive part is that a step has already been taken, because previously, we did not see this type of proposals.
02:49I think it is good that young people are invited to talk about positive things.
02:53There are important groups that have already joined this proposal.
02:57For example, one of the most popular among young people, and that is united to this proposal of Mexico Canta, is the group Firme.
03:04Added to the efforts to generate non-violence narratives, the sub-gender of corridos tumbados has its own wear and tear, the expert points out.
03:19I bet more on the wear and tear of the sub-gender than on it going out of fashion.
03:28I don't want you to tell me that it doesn't have a trajectory, because the interpreters of corridos tumbados are perfect strangers, who have descended from three or four years ago.
03:43Another important objective of Mexico Canta is to generate a cultural dialogue between the youth of Mexico and the United States.
