00:00I don't know what the USGA high horse on not playing the ball up is.
00:03I mean, I know they want to play golf as it is,
00:06but is it golf if the best players in the world are sculling sand wedges
00:09trying not to touch the ground because it's so saturated
00:13or fatting irons and hitting five irons 30 yards left
00:16when you know it's the only place you can't hit it?
00:18At some point, the conditions are causing that, and it's not in a good way.
00:22Like, I don't mind conditions causing bad shots,
00:25but when it's something out of your control,
00:28like water in the foodways, and, you know,
00:30another thing I was talking about,
00:32every time I play in those conditions,
00:34the ball always goes right off the face.
00:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:37But all these guys were hitting it left,
00:39and I don't know if they were reacting to trying not to hit it right or what,
00:43but every shot for the last hour and a half went left.
00:46You know, it's funny.
00:47I was talking to J.J. Spahn after his second shot at 12.
00:50This is, you know, we're still not in the J.J. Spahn mode at this point
00:54because Sam Burns just made a birdie at 10,
00:55and at this point, after he makes birdie at 10,
00:58it feels like Sam Burns is probably going to win this golf term.
01:00It just feels that way after making a big putt at the turn,
01:04and then the chaos happens at 11,
01:06and then all of a sudden, I'm doing the math.
01:09I'm like, J.J. Spahn has a chance to win this,
01:10and so is Victor.
01:11But at the time, J.J. hits this huge right ball
01:15after taking casual water relief.
01:18So it's not like he, I mean, he probably dropped,
01:20and it still got wet from dropping because he's still dropping in a wet spot.
01:23But J.J. walks past me, and he says,
01:25side hill wide, wet ball, pretty sweet, huh?
01:28I was like, yeah, but that was pretty tight.
01:29I mean, J.J. doesn't hit it.
01:31You know, if he pushes a shot, it's going to go like 10 to 15 yards right.
01:35It's not going to go SK right, you know?
01:36Right.
01:37It's not good.
01:38I mean, that's how far right it went,
01:39and then he gets that amazing break where he gets on top of that mound.
01:42But to your point, I saw everything, for the most part, go left except for that shot.
01:48Yeah.
01:49You saw, you know, Sam Fadden on 11, Scotty Skullet,
01:53and then Sam's wedge shot on 12 going.
01:56I mean, the only place you can't hit the ball on 12 is left of that hole,
01:59and he's got a sand wedge in his hand, just puts it in a terrible spot.
02:02Actually hit an unbelievable chip, but then missed the putt,
02:04and I think that's when he kind of got rattled at that point.
02:07Like, 11 happened, and now he thinks he's about to get one back on 12,
02:10and he makes six, and it's like, man, maybe I'm not going to win this tournament.
02:14I mean, what's going through your head as a competitor that's anybody other than J.J. Spahn, right?
02:20So J.J. Spahn makes, you know, that 40-footer at 12.
02:23He makes a, what is it, a 22-footer at 14.
02:26Then he makes a 65-footer at 18.
02:28I know those last four guys we're talking about with Spahn, Hovland, Adam Scott, Sam Burns,
02:34those are the four guys who we thought were going to win the golf tournament heading into the day.
02:38When you see all that kind of happening as a player, do you just tip your cap to the guy that just finds a way to get it done,
02:44or are you just like, man, that just seems crazy to me how somebody can make that many feet of putts
02:52in six holes on the back nine of a U.S. Open?
02:55Yeah, I think you tip your cap, and you kind of understand it's his time, right?
02:58Like, you know, those things happen to you or I when we're playing, and we, like, love it
03:03and don't think about how lucky we are, we just expect it, but as you're watching from the outside,
03:07it's like, dude, you never, you could have a small bucket back there and never make that putt on 18.
03:12So, it's your time, and, you know, I think, like I said, it's kind of making up for what happened early on in the round,
03:20and like a lot of people say, it all works out over time, and it worked out for J.J.
03:25You know, he made more feet of putts in the last six holes than some people make in a whole tournament.
03:30So, he definitely deserved it,
03:32and I think you tip your cap and realize that, you know, it's his time.
