00:00Power outages can be mostly out of your control, but being prepared for them can help you navigate the unexpected.
00:06Star City News spoke with Jeff Houston of the Emergency Management Agency about what you should do.
00:10We should always have preparedness kits. I mean, that's leftover from the winter days.
00:16So you switch it over to the warm weather, you know, up your water a little bit, your snacks, things like that.
00:23Make sure those things are in your car. Make sure you have them in a bag inside your house so in case you do lose power.
00:28Portable generators are a great piece of equipment you can have for when the power goes out.
00:32It can help keep your fridge running or your phone charged and even power a fan to keep you cool.
00:35If you have a fridge outside or a freezer outside, you can usually power those up off of one of the portable generators and things like that.
00:45The other thing to do is make sure if you do have an outside fridge, freezer, and you have stuff inside there, don't open the doors.
00:52Jeff also issued a warning about potential downed power lines.
00:55Stay away from it, all right?
00:58Even if it's a downed cable or whatever, don't take the chance, especially if it's running out.
01:05You've got it downed line.
01:07The best thing to do is probably call the sheriff's department or your local police department.
01:11As always, best practice is to stay informed about potential storms and know what to get before they come in.
01:15When you do have a power outage, if possible, report it to your electrical company.
