00:00Attorney General Pam Bondi announced a lawsuit against the state of Maine on Wednesday,

00:05claiming it failed to comply with President Trump's order to ban transgender athletes from girls and women's sports.

00:11We have exhausted every other remedy.

00:15The lawsuit follows threats from the Trump administration to cut off federal funding

00:20if Governor Janet Mills does not comply with the Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports executive order signed in February.

00:27Mills, a former attorney general in Maine, says Trump's order manipulated the federal Title IX anti-discrimination law.

00:35There are maybe two, at most two, transgender athletes competing in Maine schools right now.

00:41They decided to shut off funding for our school nutrition program.

00:45A Maine student athlete who joined Bondi in her announcement says the number of transgender athletes in the state is not the issue.

00:52It doesn't matter if it's one or a hundred, you're taking opportunities away from females.

00:58Other students in the state say the executive order is an attempt to hurt a group of people rather than protecting others.

01:05And it's not something that's okay to try in a race.

01:08Some local leaders say they will stand up for transgender athletes against the federal government's lawsuit.

01:13I don't think anyone should ever have to justify their existence.

01:16Meanwhile, State Representative Laura Libby says the state government is not reflecting the values of Maine people.

01:23So we're pleased to see the administration taking action to correct this.

01:29Maine's Attorney General Aaron Frey says he is confident they are complying with state and federal laws.
