Speaking to reporters, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) discussed Iran.
Transcript
00:00Mackie, how are you?
00:01Yeah, and I wanted to get your thoughts on what is taking place in Iran, between Iran and Israel.
00:07Do you support President Trump's actions? Do you support further involvement of the U.S. military?
00:12Well, number one, I think this is something on which the entire world can agree.
00:20And Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon or the ability to deliver a nuclear warhead, period.
00:32Now, to correctly assess where we are now, you have to distinguish between could and should.
00:40And if Israel were somehow allowed to use America's heaviest bombs, bunker busters, would that do the trick?
01:00None of us know the answer to that.
01:03The president does, and our intelligence services do.
01:06Would it lead to regime change?
01:12The president has a pretty good feel for that, and our intelligence services.
01:17The rest of us don't.
01:19If it did lead to regime change, would that lead to new leadership or chaos in Iran?
01:28The president probably has a good feel for that and his intelligence people, but we don't.
01:32So it's very hard to answer the should part of the question until you know the could part, the answer to the could part.
01:42So I think for a while we're all going to have to be patient until the could and the should becomes clearer.
01:52Senator, what kind of information would you support further U.S. military action, U.S. troops being involved?
01:57I think I just answered your question.
01:58Senator, what would you need to see in order to approve any military action?
02:03Because obviously Congress does have involvement in offensive action.
02:06Well, I can't answer that because I don't know what I don't know.
02:09That's why you have to distinguish here between the could and the should.
02:15Everyone who's offering an opinion about the should, and they're entitled to it, does not have any more information than the rest of us have on the could.
02:26And you can't answer the should until you answer the could.
02:30American foreign policy is always a balance between values and interests.
02:41The value here is obvious to everyone.
02:45Iran cannot have a bomb.
02:48It's just unthinkable, and I support the president unconditionally on that.
02:53But the interest part, you have to weigh costs and benefits to determine whether you can achieve your values.
03:03And we don't, I mean, I don't want to overstate this.
03:06Everybody's entitled to their opinion.
03:09But you cannot go to the should part until you understand the could.
03:13And I don't know how much of that President Trump will be willing to share with us.
03:20He's sharing more and more, but he's got to be careful for security reasons.
03:23Do you want Congress to have a say in any potential action?
03:27Do you think Congress should have a role to make a decision?
03:30I would love to see Congress have a role, but we certainly don't have time in the midst of what we all see going on for Congress to sit and cogitate for six or eight months.
03:45Have you spoken to the president since all of this conflict started to emerge?
03:49Have you spoken to Iran?
03:50Since the, since, since Iran.
03:52The strikes, yeah.
03:54Or since Israel jumped on Iran?
03:56No, I have not.
03:57There's a lot to.
03:58But I.
