00:00I imagine to be one of the most challenging things for you is you're playing Isla, a character who kind of comes and goes in her mental state.
00:05Are you day by day trying to think to yourself, okay, how is Isla today?
00:09And how would you find where she is, kind of from scene to scene?
00:12God, do you know what? I feel like it was kind of the most complicated aspect of playing her was this, you know,
00:20sometimes she is very present and other times she's very, very lucid.
00:23And within that she goes on such a journey, you know.
00:26So it's kind of mapping that out and make sure there was enough ebbs and flows and then it felt believable.
00:32And so I always just try and play the truth of the moment and was very lucky that I was led by Danny, who, you know,
00:39because sometimes when you're playing that, you can kind of feel like you're maybe playing the same beat over and over again, you know,
00:46but hopefully that's not the case.
00:49I love that this was all shot on location in the northeast of England.
00:52Yes.
00:52You obviously spent a lot of time there as a result.
00:54Share some memories with me of what it's like being and living in the northeast for a while.
00:58It was heaven.
00:59There was a lot of, a lot of the crew were doing wild water swimming.
01:02I went to an incredible restaurant called Pine, which had the most insane food.
01:07But just generally, like, it was a very magical experience.
01:11The film, to me, feels very numinous.
01:13Like, we were, you know, you're in these incredible landscapes.
01:16You've got full moons.
01:17You've got, you know, you've got the set of the Bone Temple, which was fully built on a site in North Yorkshire with a flowing river.
01:27And you had the kind of, um, the bone wind chimes that Kelsen, there was like a music going through.
01:33So it was, it was really magical.
01:34And if I may sneak in one, cheeky one, uh, you are going on tour next year with Prima Fasca, which is so fantastic.
01:39You never see someone who's gone to Broadway in the West End and take on a UK tour.
01:43Why is that important for you to do?
01:45And are you looking forward to seeing all the little parts of the UK along the way?
01:47I can't wait.
01:48I mean, it's also like, when does this opportunity come up?
01:52You know, I can't wait to go to the regional theatres and support them in that way.
01:57Um, I feel like I have more to give.
01:59Tessa, you know, it's, it's the most, it's been the most enriching experience of my life.
02:04Um, and we're getting the team back.
02:06A lot of the team who were on the, on the London run are coming back.
02:10Um, I've just got more to give.
02:12I feel like we all do as a, as a team.
02:14Um, and to take it to Liverpool is like, yeah.
02:17It's exciting.
02:18There's someone from a small town who wants you to go around the country.
02:20Thank you for taking it to these other parts of the UK as well.
02:22Oh, I can't wait.
02:23Thank you very much.
02:32Hey, uh, congratulations on your performance in this film.
02:35You are the common thread, which leads us through this incredible story.
02:37However, along the way, you are working with three titans, that being Aaron, Jodie, and Ray.
02:42Yeah.
02:42Please tell us what you picked up from each of those experiences with those three actors.
02:46Um, I liked watching them get ready before scene, and it was great seeing all the differences
02:55in actors.
02:55Um, you know, for some scenes, Aaron would jump up, uh, get physical.
03:01But, uh, Rafe, you know, he was already in it, you know, uh, very method, uh, he's really
03:07talented.
03:08And, and Jodie, you know, she would just sit down and like, get ready.
03:12But, yeah, they're, they're all amazing.
03:14Yeah.
03:14It sounds like the three of those have their methods.
03:16Yeah.
03:17Do you have yours?
03:19Are you still trying to find yours?
03:20Yeah.
03:21I think I'm a mix of all of them.
03:22Nice.
03:23You know, if it's a very physical scene, I'll jump up, do some, uh, running, high knees.
03:27Um, but, you know, for other things, like emotional scenes, very calm scenes, I'll just,
03:35I'll just be in the, in the moment.
03:37Yeah.
03:38It's so, it sounds so nice to have the Jodie accent on the screen.
03:40Yeah.
03:41Um, I guess take us back to when you were within your local area and you get the call
03:46saying, oh, Daddy Boyle wants you.
03:48Yeah.
03:49I mean, it's, it's very, it's always going to be exciting that, cause I really wanted,
03:53I really wanted this part from the moment I've seen, uh, 20 years.
03:56Uh, and yeah, you know, I was just, I was jumping up and down, my dog came in, was spinning.
04:03Um, yeah, my family were going crazy.
04:06It was just a really exciting moment.
04:11But I mean, a year ago, we were shooting this film, uh, and I remember it, like, still
04:18at that time being very surreal.
04:20And this moment felt very, very far away, but, um, here we are and I'm very happy.
04:25Well, this time last year, you were working with that man, two people to your, uh, your
04:30right, Danny Boyle.
04:31Yeah.
04:32How did you find him as a director?
04:33Lovely.
04:34Absolutely lovely.
04:35I mean, he, he's, uh, to be honest, he's nothing like I've worked with before.
04:38He's very eccentric.
04:39Um, but I mean, there's a reason why he's, uh, such a successful filmmaker.
04:44And it's because he's absolutely brilliant.
04:46So.
04:47Um, your character within this Eric is, uh, we can't really talk too much about him and
04:51I've given too much away, I guess.
04:52But what can you tell us about the character that you play?
04:54Um, well, I guess in a sense he represents the audience cause he's, uh, he's from the outside world.
05:02While the UK has been in quarantine for 28 years.
05:05Um, and, uh, he finds himself in this position where he's almost certain he will die.
05:12Um, and, um, he's trying to cope with that, I guess.
05:16I was watching interviews today and I, uh, I did hear that you utter a word within this film,
05:21which is the first for the 28 franchise.
05:23That being Eric says the word zombie.
05:25Right.
05:26Yeah.
05:27Which is the first time it's ever been said.
05:28Did you know that that was going to have an impact?
05:30Uh, no, I didn't actually.
05:32That's, that's hilarious.
05:33No, I, I, I mean, I remember like it was, uh, they're infected, you know, they're infected.
05:38That's what we always talked about.
05:39And then all of a sudden that just comes out and I'm like, wait, that's better not though.
05:44Was it addressed at the time?
05:45Like, wait, did you just say zombies?
05:47I can't remember.
05:48Yeah.
05:49I think it was maybe.
05:51I think I was like, am I allowed to say that?
05:54And they're like, you know, I put this one, this one girl out.
