00:00Mmm, he's amazing.
00:02I was so delighted that he made an approach.
00:05It really struck me when I watched the film last week, actually,
00:08because I was like, oh, my gosh.
00:09Hello. Hello.
00:10Two of my favourite actors working today.
00:12Or any other day.
00:14I know you can't take this face very seriously, but I mean that.
00:17Rafe, last time I spoke to you,
00:19I didn't mention something that I regretted,
00:21which is your reading of the line,
00:23what did a tour so simple in Hail Caesar,
00:26is one of my all-time favourite moments in the film.
00:28It lives in my head, rent-free, trippingly.
00:33It makes me wonder,
00:34are any lines of your own or other people in film
00:37that kind of just stay in there and won't leave?
00:41God, not that I can think of.
00:43If it was there, it would be there, believe me.
00:44I know, that's what I mean.
00:45If somebody asked me this, I'd be like,
00:46what did a tour so simple, like, immediately?
00:48Don't worry about it.
00:4928 years later, let's go on to this, shall we?
00:51This film is a bit batshit, really, isn't it?
00:56In a good way.
00:57It feels like a film that's been made with, like,
00:59a really bold autonomy,
01:01which makes it kind of alive and unpredictable
01:04and interesting at every turn.
01:06Quintessential sort of like Danny Boyle, really.
01:09So what's your experience of Mr. Boyle?
01:12How's this been for you guys working with him?
01:14Mmm, he's amazing.
01:16I think we all had a really beautiful experience on this movie.
01:21You know, he's a, he's a man who, he's incredibly personable
01:27and innovative and excitable and engaging.
01:33So to kind of just work with that level of enthusiasm and intellect is,
01:38you know, to be kind of led by a director as an actor in that way is a real dream.
01:43Right, it's been, you've been in this industry for a long time
01:47and Danny's been making a name for himself for 25, 30 years almost.
01:52Have you ever come close to you guys coming together in the past?
01:56No, no, I somehow, yes, I was so delighted that he made an approach.
02:02I love meeting him.
02:03I think he's a fantastic human being, great man, very warm, smart,
02:09perceptive, kind, supportive, carries all those qualities onto the set.
02:17Very, just, you feel supported, you feel nurtured.
02:21There's also the way he puts across a suggestion, an idea, a directorial,
02:26you know, something he's inclined to want you to do or try.
02:32He does it in a way that feels, you know, very constructive and in enthusiasm.
02:38It's interesting you say that because one thing that does stand out in this film,
02:42and I wouldn't usually bring it up because it sounds crass,
02:44but there's a lot of nudity, zombie nudity,
02:48but I feel it's used so much, it's kind of an obvious choice to unnerve and unsettle,
02:54and there's part of you which is, like, kind of uncomfortable seeing it in a kind of giggly way,
03:00and then there's a terror and a fear and whatnot.
03:02What was that experience like, that idea, was that put forward to you guys?
03:06Were you aware it was going to be that in your face when you signed up?
03:10It's funny, I never really questioned it.
03:12It was, for me, it was just, like, kind of them going back to the way in which we come into the world,
03:18which is bare and it's primal and it's animalistic, do you know what I mean?
03:22So I really never questioned it.
03:26Of course, kind of terrifying when you're being chased by an alpha like that,
03:32but, yeah, it was something I just didn't, I guess I was in. I was invested.
03:38It helped shift kind of tonally, because the moments I'd be terrified,
03:42sometimes I'd be, like, kind of uncomfortable, and that led to me, cards on the table,
03:47it's the first time I've had a little weep in a press screening in all the many years I've done this job,
03:53and it's the scene in the third act with you guys, and I don't want to talk about it too much
03:56because I'll get slaughtered online for giving away what happens, but it's very, very poignant.
04:01What was it like, especially with young Alfie, who's brilliant in this, kind of filming that?
04:08It could be a film in itself, really, that whole section with you guys.
04:12Yeah, it was, the way the film closes in that last act with the three of us, with Jodie and Alfie,
04:20and I think we all felt, as written on the page, it's a very tender and painful thing that's been,
04:30that these characters are having to accept, which I think it's a conversation you'll find people are having everywhere all the time.
04:41So, that suddenly, this very real, tragic confrontation with mortality, and the way it's written.
04:51I think Alex's writing around that was so sensitive and fine and beautiful.
04:56And I think, I know, I felt completely bowled over by seeing, watching Jodie in that sequence.
05:04That was very wonderful to see with Alfie, it was brilliant.
05:07It was, I think Danny nurtures that sensitivity.
05:11It's something about, you know, the director, it's the spirit of the director,
05:15which allows those energies to flow and actors to feel they've got the arena to go to a place.
05:22And I feel like Danny's emotions are so readily available.
05:25You know, like he's, in those kind of moments, he's, he feels really present within that.
05:31And it really struck me when I watched the film last week, actually, because I was like,
05:35oh my gosh, you feel like Kelsen, Kelsen's energy is like, you feel so held by him.
05:41Like what he's kind of providing the characters and helping facilitate as an audience.
05:46You feel so comforted by him, which you're so ready.
05:51You're kind of really needing at that time.
05:53And it's so surprising as well to come from where it comes from.
05:55I can't give too much of the plot away.
05:57I was just very glad there was at least another 10 or 15 minutes left to pull myself together
06:01before I had to leave into the daylight.
06:03Anyway, guys, love your work as always.
06:05Looking forward to the next one.
06:07And I will catch you down the road, I guess.
06:10Nice to see you again.
06:11Cheers, guys.
06:12Well, we haven't taken care of.
06:13You know, tame life.
06:15It's cool rather than with a moment.
06:17I'm beginning to be talking about doing things to do locates.
06:20But eventually, if we been on a scene, right?
