00:00good afternoon my name is phil hewitt group arts editor at sussex newspapers now by the magic of
00:07the internet lovely to speak to julie lloyd who is just outside washington dc but won't be for
00:12long julie you are just about to make your first ever tour to the uk playing some fabulous places
00:19on the way do you have a clear idea of what the uk is going to be like why now why the uk now
00:25yeah well it's been on my wish list for a really long time so i'm so excited about finally having
00:30the opportunity to come um i have only set foot before in heathrow airport i've never actually
00:36stepped out of the airport so my impressions uh of what it's going to be like are admittedly largely
00:44based on what people have told me about how amazing it's going to be i've i've had some musician friends
00:49who have toured and have just said how incredible people are over there and how warm and welcoming
00:55and what huge fans of music they are so that was a really a really big part of why i wanted to
01:01know for yourself but this comes in such an interesting time in your career and isn't it
01:05because you walked away from music for 10 years or so but oddly oddly but intriguingly you came back
01:12during the pandemic and does it feel different this time around it definitely does feel different i like
01:18to think that i have the the wisdom of experience i'm you know i'm 15 to 20 years older than my first
01:26go around and so i have perspective on you know what it means to really enjoy just being out there
01:34and enjoying the process and trying to let go a little bit of the things that are outside of your
01:38control which are the outcomes and whether or not you are successful i'm trying to you know work on
01:44being better about that every day and you're saying first time around you were trying to
01:48live up to what you thought a singer songwriter should be but now it's much more authentic isn't
01:54it it's much more you being you writing about your experiences that's a big difference isn't it
02:00it is yeah and i have more stories of my own to tell i think you know when i was 24 25 years old
02:05i hadn't really lived yet i i was writing you know this is what a breakup or a love song should sound
02:11like having not really experienced the kind of depth of emotions that come with that and so
02:16coming back and having actually lived experiences to base my songs off of everything now comes from
02:22you know at least a kernel of something that's happened to me and then of course you embellish it
02:27so is music something you just have to wait for until the time is right did you think that did you
02:33sort of think you would come back to at some point
02:35i think i think i always felt that it was was in there and i think it's actually really reassuring
02:43because during the time that i kind of stepped away and i wasn't performing and i wasn't writing
02:47it you kind of wonder if i sit down at the piano or the guitar to try to write again
02:53what will anything come out and two will anything come out that i actually would want to share with
02:58the world and so um there's a sense of like i feel like my story hasn't been fully told yet but i'm
03:04afraid that if i try to tell it it's not going to be good um so it's been very reassuring that you know
03:10when in fact when you do find the the space and the the kind of give yourself permission i guess to
03:17come back to it and and lose a little bit of the expectations of yourself that yes it's still there
03:23fantastic well good luck with everything i hope you love the uk hope you love winchester in particular
03:29thank you great sir good luck with everything and lovely to speak to you you too thank you so much
03:35for having me
