00:58That is our top focus on NewsTrack
01:01Hello and welcome to an India Today special broadcast that comes to you from Calgary in Canada
01:10I'm Gaurav Savan, several world leaders have started arriving here in Calgary
01:15For the G7 Summit that will take place in the Rocky Mountains in Kananakis area of Calgary
01:25Now those are the beautiful mountains and lakes
01:28It's at a higher altitude, much colder than what Calgary is
01:34Calgary is usually between 6 degrees to 8 degrees at night
01:39About 15 during day in summers, goes to minus 40
01:43But tensions are rising and tensions are rising
01:46And how? When it comes to the Israel-Iran conflict
01:51And in the Israel-Iran conflict, the escalations that's taken place very recently
01:57Over the course of the next one hour, we get you much more on this special broadcast
02:02But first, as always, the headlines on the NewsTrack at the end
02:13After Iran strikes on Tel Aviv and Haifa
02:16Israel asks Iranian citizens to evacuate Tehran threatens to leave the Nuclear Weapons Treaty
02:23Russian President Vladimir Putin tells US counterpart Donald Trump ready to resume peace talks

02:58First, Trump-Modi face-to-face meeting after Operation Sindhur
03:02Cease-fire credit war
03:10Cockpit voice recorder recovered from Air India crash site in Ahmedabad
03:13Radio transmissions and conversations between the pilot
03:17And of course, the engine noises to be examined by probe agencies
03:27Government sets the ball rolling on census caste survey in census 2027
03:32Politics escalates Congress asks his census another jumla
03:36BJP hits out of the Congress over hushing up of the 2011 caste census data
03:42Our top focus story on this special broadcast is a statement that's coming in from US President Donald Trump
04:04Here in Canada President Trump has made it very clear the United States stands with Israel
04:11He said and I quote, we have always supported Israel
04:15Now, this is President Trump's first summit remarks at G7
04:19He slammed not just Justin Trudeau the earlier Prime Minister of Canada
04:25But also Barack Obama, the earlier President of the United States for throwing out Russia from G7
04:32Remember G7 used to be G8 earlier between 2014
04:39When Russia of course was thrown out
04:42Donald Trump has said Iranians want to talk about de-escalation
04:47Iran is not winning this war
04:51They should talk before it's too late
04:54That's the big point US President Donald Trump is making
04:58Remember G7 is a very powerful body of the seven strongest economies in the world
05:06But Donald Trump says it should have been G8
05:09It was wrong on the part of the leaders like Justin Trudeau and Barack Obama to have thrown Russia out
05:15On the issue of the Ukraine war at that point of time
05:19The operations that were going on in Crimea
05:22I'll tell you more about it
05:23But before I get you more on the story
05:25Let's listen in to US President Donald Trump here in Canada at G7
05:31They'd like to talk but they should have done that before
05:35I had 60 days and they had 60 days
05:38On the 61st day I said we don't have a deal
05:40They have to make a deal and it's painful for both parties
05:45But I'd say Iran is not winning this war
05:49And they should talk and they should talk immediately before it's too late
05:53And I quickly want to cut across to India today's Pranay Upadhyay for more on this big story
05:57Pranay that's a big statement that's coming in from the US President
06:01So let's break it down in two parts
06:03One, very strongly stand with Israel and that's obvious
06:09Two, it should have been G8 and not G7 wrong on the part of Obama and Trudeau to have thrown Russia out
06:16Now that's a big statement at a time when he's already in touch with the Russian President on the Russia-Ukraine war
06:22Absolutely, Gaurav, but since you have also covered the previous tenure of President Donald Trump between 2016 to 2020
06:31You would recall, Gaurav, that this has been his consistent position
06:34Because Russia was thrown out of G8 post-Crimea incident in 2013-14
06:40And President Donald Trump at that time also, he said that it was a wrong decision to throw out Putin
06:46Because he thinks that, you know, without isolating Putin, isolating Russia, we're not going to solve the problem
06:54Even in this presidency, he has maintained this thing
06:57As far as the Iran-Israel conflict is concerned, on that count as well, President Donald Trump and the US President's position is quite clear
07:05As far as siding with Israel is concerned
07:07But there's a very significant statement which has just now come in
07:11That is from the Iranian Foreign Minister Syed Abbas Araqchi
07:14And he said he has accused Israel and the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
07:21But on the other side, Abbas Araqchi has clearly said that it needs only one phone call from Washington, D.C. to Benjamin Netanyahu
07:29And we can go back to the table of diplomacy
07:34So this is a very clear indication from Iranian side as well
07:38That Iran is willing to engage with the United States on diplomacy
07:42But provided the situation comes to that point by the cessation of missile strike
07:48With a cessation of airstrike by Israel
07:50So there is something which is going on in the back-to-end diplomacy
07:55Also, President Donald, President Putin
07:58Speaking to President Donald Trump, President Putin
08:01Speaking to Masood Pasajkayan
08:03Who is the President of Iran
08:06So there is clearly some diplomacy happening
08:08Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also reaching there in Canada
08:12Gaurav
08:12And you would be tracking more developments from there
08:15Okay, I'll come back to you for more
08:21Prime Minister Narendra Modi is en route Canada right now
08:25He had a very successful visit to Cyprus
08:27Not only is it very important from people to people
08:31And government to government
08:33And country to country relationship
08:34But it also has a wider geopolitical and strategic implication
08:38Remember, it was then Prime Minister, late Indira Gandhi
08:42Who had visited Cyprus in 1982
08:45And then Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002
08:48And then Narendra Modi in 2025
08:51A country that plays a very significant role
08:54You know, India's visits
08:56While the country, India and Cyprus have been very close
08:59But the Prime Minister's visit
09:02Is likely to add new impetus to these ties
09:05And especially at a time
09:06When Turkey has been openly hostile to India
09:09Openly supported Pakistan
09:11State-sponsored radical Islamist terror
09:14Not just in terms of selling military hardware
09:16But also Turkish operatives
09:18Drone operatives being on ground
09:20Targeting India
09:21Something that India hasn't taken very kindly to
09:24But India-Cyprus relations
09:26Prime Minister Narendra Modi being awarded
09:28The highest civilian award of Cyprus
09:31Which he said is on behalf of 140 crore Indians
09:35But what does this mean
09:37For the relationship between the two countries
09:39And that region where India has more partners now
09:45To take on hostile forces
09:47Prime Minister Modi is on his way to Canada
09:55To attend the G7 summit
09:57Where top global leaders will discuss
10:00The world's most pressing issues
10:02The Israel-Iran war
10:05Trade and more
10:06This marks Narendra Modi's first visit to Canada
10:12Since diplomatic relations between New Delhi
10:14And Ottawa turned frosty
10:16Over the killing of Khalistani separatist
10:20Hardeep Singh Nijjar
10:22In this particular G7
10:24India will be speaking about
10:27Energy security, innovation
10:29New technologies
10:31Like AI, quantum, etc
10:34Which are contemporary topics
10:36Which affect all of us
10:37And our views will definitely be noticed
10:39I'm sure
10:40The Indian diaspora in Canada
10:43Is awaiting the Prime Minister's arrival
10:46It indicates the power which India is emerging to be
10:51Being a developing country
10:53It has definitely left its mark
10:56On the entire world stage
10:58And Modi is a born leader
11:01And he's already proved his mettle
11:03Again and again
11:04Year after year
11:05Term after year term
11:06So yeah
11:07It would not be a complete G7 without Modi
11:09Modi
11:10Modi coming to Canada
11:11Is a big move
11:12And they can build a relationship
11:14With which Indian students can grow more
11:17And develop themselves
11:19And I believe that that can happen
11:21And that's what I hope for
11:23The G7 is an informal grouping
11:27Of the world's most industrialised economies
11:30France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom
11:35Japan, the United States and Canada
11:39Representatives from the European Union
11:44The IMF
11:45The World Bank
11:46And the United Nations
11:48Also participate
11:49While India is not a member of the G7
11:54New Delhi has been consistently invited
11:57To attend the grouping's meetings
11:59Since 2019
12:01If the new government in Canada
12:06Wants to extend
12:08A hand of friendship to India
12:11India will respond
12:12Because we have linkages with Canada
12:15Which are several
12:16People to people
12:17Economic
12:18Exactly
12:20You know
12:21Diaspora
12:21Education
12:22Economic
12:23Health
12:24Energy
12:25Natural resources
12:26The G7 invite reflects India's growing importance to the world
12:32Canadian Prime Minister
12:38Made it clear that the summit wouldn't be complete
12:41Without the participation of the fifth largest economy in the world
12:45India, the fifth largest economy in the world
12:50Effectively the most populous country in the world
12:53Central to a number of those supply chains
12:56At the heart of a number of those supply chains
12:58So it makes sense
12:58And in addition
13:00Bilaterally
13:02We have now agreed
13:04Importantly
13:05To continued law enforcement
13:08To law enforcement dialogue
13:11So there's been some progress on that
13:13Recognizes issues of accountability
13:15I extended the invitation to Prime Minister Modi
13:18In that context
13:21And he has accepted
13:22The other six members of the G7
13:25Are also interested in deepening their strategic partnerships with India
13:29The Prime Minister's G7 participation
13:34Comes at a time of great geopolitical flux
13:38And divisions within the G7 itself
13:41The Prime Minister's presence at the G7 summit
13:45Reflects India's pivotal role
13:48In shaping the global agenda
13:50With Gaurav Sawant in Calgary
13:53Bureau Report
13:54India Today
13:56And big story that's coming in
14:05The West is a divided block on G7
14:08You have America and several European countries
14:11Not on the same page
14:13Whether it's on the Israel-Iran conflict
14:16Whether you have the Russia-Ukraine conflict
14:18Or even the Indo-Pacific region
14:21With Donald Trump back at the White House
14:23Russia is a country which America wants back in G7 to be G8 once again
14:32But how does this war between Israel and Iran end?
14:37The US strongly stands with Israel
14:41You have European countries who want Israel to dial down on tensions and on escalation
14:47And use the road of dialogue
14:49Will that really happen?
14:50But that's not the only issue
14:51Again on cooperation and economy and investments
14:57Now look at America
14:59America wants America first
15:01G7 is all about economic cooperation
15:03Donald Trump insists on making America
15:06What then happens to the European countries?
15:09What happens to China?
15:10What happens to supply chains?
15:12All of those are issues which will be thrashed
15:15But again there is no joint communique that will come out
15:20There will just be a summary of the discussions that have taken place
15:24And this just shows how they are not on the same page
15:27That's very clear
15:29So whether it's on trade, technology, climate and security
15:33Rift over Russia-Ukraine war, West Asia conflict
15:36Trump's return shifts the focus once again
15:39US tariffs, defence, budget demands
15:42How much, what percent of GDP needs to be spent
15:46These are all issues where the country's G7 partners are not on the same page
15:52So Mark Carney, the Canadian Prime Minister has said
15:55There will be a summary note
15:57No joint communique
15:59Lots of reactions coming in
16:01Let's listen in
16:02Barack Obama and a person named Trudeau
16:07Didn't want to have Russia in
16:09And I would say that that was a mistake
16:12Because I think you wouldn't have a war right now if you had Russia in
16:14And you wouldn't have a war right now if Trump were president four years ago
16:19But it didn't work out that way
16:21But it used to be the G8
16:22And now it's, I guess, what's that, nine years ago?
16:26Eight years ago
16:26They threw Russia out, which I claimed was a very big mistake
16:32Even though I wasn't in politics and I was very loud about it
16:35It was a mistake in that
16:36Well, it's not a bad idea
16:37I don't mind that
16:38If somebody wants to suggest China coming in, I think we suggest
16:42But you want to have people that you can talk to
16:44You know, they don't talk
16:46Putin speaks to me
16:47He doesn't speak to anybody else
16:48He doesn't want to talk
16:49Because he was very insulted when he got thrown out of the G8
16:52As I would be, as you would be, as anybody would be
16:55He was very insulted
16:56And, I mean, he was thrown out
16:58By Trudeau
17:00Who convinced one or two people
17:02Along with Obama
17:04He was thrown out
17:05And he's not a happy person about it
17:08I can tell you
17:09And in G7
17:13Seven powerful economies
17:16But when you have President Donald Trump
17:19Who insists on America first
17:21When you have powerful European countries
17:24That want a different end to the Russia-Ukraine war
17:28The American president wants a different ending to the Russia-Ukraine war
17:31Clearly, is this now becoming a dialogue of the deaf?
17:36What's the way forward?
17:37What role do countries like India
17:40Seen as a very powerful rising economy
17:44Growing economy
17:45The fifth largest
17:46On our way to being the fourth
17:48Some argue we already are the fourth
17:50On our way in the next couple of years
17:51To be the third largest economy
17:53What role do countries like India play?
17:56Especially when it comes to supply chain management
17:58Very important aspect
18:00The use of technology
18:02From quantum computing
18:04To the use of technology
18:06To benefit masses
18:08India's digital benefit transfer
18:10Artificial intelligence
18:12How can all of that benefit the world?
18:15That's something that India
18:16Would be bringing to the table
18:18I get you more in this report
18:20As Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney makes his G7 debut
18:34The stakes are high
18:36The summit comes amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war
18:42Rising tensions in West Asia
18:44And growing global economic uncertainty
18:47All magnified by the unpredictable presence
18:51Of US President Donald Trump
18:53Trump's stance on major conflicts
18:55From Ukraine to Iran and Russia
18:58As America's long-standing allies worried
19:01His past conduct hasn't helped
19:04In 2018, he had stormed out of the G7 in Cuba
19:08And refused to sign the joint communique
19:11Over tariff disputes
19:12Moreover, he did not attend any further G7 summits
19:17After 2019
19:18And due to the COVID-19 pandemic
19:21He made no international trips
19:23Between February 2020
19:25And the end of his presidency
19:27Tensions between world leaders and Trump
19:31Has only intensified in recent months
19:34With steep US tariffs still in place
19:37Including 25% on Canadian autos
19:40And 50% on steel and aluminium
19:42With Canada's retaliatory measures in effect
19:46Economic friction is once again front and centre
19:49The summit will also mark
19:56Trump and Prime Minister Modi's first meeting
19:59Since the India-Pakistan ceasefire
20:01A truce, Trump has repeatedly claimed
20:04Credit for brokering
20:05To keep things on track
20:09Canada has scrapped the joint communique
20:11And opted for shorter, focused sessions
20:14And private talks
20:16The Sears G7 is more than a summit
20:19It's a test of whether traditional alliances
20:22Can withstand the unpredictability of Donald Trump
20:26Bureau Report, India Today
20:31Now, India will be playing a pivotal role
20:39In the G7 outreach programme
20:41Remember, India is not a part of the G7
20:44But there are several countries
20:46That have now been campaigning
20:47For a G10
20:49Or as many argue
20:51A D10
20:52Or the 10 most powerful
20:54Democracies in the world
20:57Which are powerful economies
20:59Now, democracy is shaping a multipolar world
21:02That is India's key focus area
21:05Key result area
21:07Instead of an individual
21:08It should be
21:09Or a country
21:09It should be a group of countries
21:11You know, that shape the course
21:14Supply chain management
21:15That's very important
21:16Now, there's new leadership
21:18Coming in several countries
21:19And this would be Prime Minister
21:21Narendra Modi's first interaction
21:23With several of those leaderships
21:24Remember, Narendra Modi is now
21:26Amongst the senior most world leaders
21:29Having won three elections back to back
21:332014 to 19
21:3519 to 24
21:37And 24 onwards
21:38Whereas, you have US President Donald Trump
21:41Who's coming
21:42But after a gap
21:43You have several other leaders
21:45Who've done either one tenure
21:47Or some in their second tenure
21:49But nobody in their third tenure
21:52In terms of powerful democracies
21:54Across the world
21:55That's the kind of heft and experience
21:58That India also brings to this table
22:00Prime Minister Narendra Modi
22:02Brings to the table
22:03Also, the fact that India is a very powerful
22:06Democracy
22:08And a rising economy
22:10The world's fastest growing large economy
22:13A country that yet
22:16You know, gives direct benefit transfer
22:18To 800 million people
22:21More than the population
22:22Of several countries in Europe
22:24And that's something
22:25That's discussed very extensively
22:27In these countries
22:29You know, how is India emerging
22:31As that growth engine
22:33And I want to bring in Pranay Upadhyay
22:35For more on this
22:36And Pranay, that's where India's role in G7
22:39Even though we are not a part of G7
22:41Becomes very critical
22:44And perhaps something new
22:47May just emerge
22:48Pranay, what do we expect?
22:51Gaurav, you rightly pointed out
22:53If you see the composition of G7 countries
22:55Which is considered as the developed economies
22:58Grouping
22:58Out of these developed economies
23:00India is a better economy
23:03India is a bigger economy
23:05As compared to four other member countries
23:08Of the G7 grouping
23:10Be it France
23:11Be it Italy
23:12Be it Canada
23:12Or like, you know
23:14Even Japan
23:15We are at par with Japan
23:17So this clearly shows
23:18That what India brings to the table
23:20On the G7 platform
23:23So this clearly shows
23:24The strength of India's outreach
23:26And that's why
23:27Since 2002
23:282003 onwards
23:29India has consistently received
23:31Outreach invitation
23:33By every country
23:34Which has hosted
23:35The G7 grouping
23:36This is the economic importance of India
23:38But India also comes
23:39With a unique depth
23:41Which is the diplomatic depth
23:43Here
23:44Because this summit
23:46Is happening at a time
23:47When the world is reeling
23:48Through intense escalation
23:50Of conflicts
23:51But be it Russia-Ukraine conflict
23:54India enjoys good relationship
23:55With both Russia and Ukraine
23:58India enjoys good relationship
23:59With Israel and Iran
24:01And India has also offered
24:03That if the need arises
24:04We are ready
24:05We stand by
24:06To help either parties
24:08To reach a diplomacy
24:09And, you know
24:10A peace solution
24:11A negotiation
24:11If they want to come to table
24:13We are there to help them out
24:15Which this clearly shows
24:16And in fact
24:17If
24:17You mentioned about
24:19President Donald Trump
24:20President Donald Trump
24:20Is considered
24:21As a great disruptor
24:23As far as the established orders
24:24Are concerned
24:24But in the 51st G7 summit
24:27There are already talks
24:29About the expansion plans
24:30To have more relevant partners
24:32People have already
24:33Propped up the idea
24:34Of inclusion of China
24:35But if China
24:36Need to be included
24:37Why not India?
24:38India comes with
24:39A very good credentials
24:40Being a democracy
24:41Being an emerging economic superpower
24:44And also
24:45The most populous country
24:46On the planet
24:47So therefore
24:48India comes with
24:49A unique experience
24:50And unique strength
24:52As far as the G7
24:53Is concerned
24:54Very important point
24:59You bring here Pranayv
25:00For joining me here
25:01On this India Today
25:02Special broadcast
25:02For the moment
25:03Pranayvapathiai
25:04Many thanks
25:05Now
25:05What's also very critical
25:07As part of Prime Minister
25:09Narendra Modi's visit
25:10He will be here
25:11In a couple of hours
25:12From now
25:13For that all-important summit
25:14Tomorrow
25:15Would be his series
25:17Of bilateral meetings
25:18And he has several
25:19Bilaterals
25:20That are lined up
25:21There's one
25:22That's anticipated
25:23With the Prime Minister
25:25Of Canada
25:26Mark Carney
25:27India-Canada relations
25:29They went downhill
25:30When Justin Trudeau
25:32Was at the helm
25:33Of affairs
25:33And it just
25:34Kept going
25:35Downhill
25:36Despite India's
25:37Best efforts
25:37To ensure
25:38That the relationship
25:40Does not
25:41Does not get impacted
25:43By Trudeau
25:44Getting the support
25:45Of the Khalistani elements
25:46But now
25:47There is cautious optimism
25:49Canada has invested
25:51More than 75 billion dollars
25:53Of their pension funds
25:55In the Indian markets
25:56Because India
25:56Is a very stable market
25:57But the potential
25:59Of this relationship
26:00Is much more
26:01Will
26:02This relationship
26:03Realize its true potential
26:05Under Mark Carney
26:06And Narendra Modi
26:07Will there be action
26:08Against the Khalistani elements
26:10There's already conversation
26:11About intelligence cooperation
26:13And police cooperation
26:14Between the two countries
26:15What does that mean
26:16I get you more
26:17In this report
26:18As I slip into a quick break
26:20Lots more coming up
26:21On the other side
26:22Of this report
26:23And a break

26:27The stage is set
26:31For the 2025 G7 summit
26:34One of the most
26:35Anticipated diplomatic gatherings
26:37Of the year
26:37But for India
26:41And Canada
26:41It signals
26:42The first high level
26:43Engagement
26:44Between the two nations
26:45Since ties soured
26:47In 2023
26:48And is also
26:49Prime Minister Modi's
26:51First visit to Canada
26:52Since 2015
26:53With Mark Carney
26:55Now at the helm
26:56Of affairs
26:57As Canada's new
26:58Prime Minister
26:58There is renewed hope
27:00For a diplomatic reset
27:01Mark Carney
27:04Has highlighted
27:04India's growing
27:05Global influence
27:06Stating that
27:08It is impossible
27:08To address major challenges
27:10Whether it be
27:11Energy security
27:12Climate change
27:14Or AI
27:14Without India
27:15At the table
27:16Despite strained
27:19Diplomatic ties
27:20Economic relations
27:22Between India
27:22And Canada
27:23Remains strong
27:24India is Ottawa's

27:28With bilateral goods
27:30Trade nearing
27:3110 billion dollars
27:32In 2024
27:32India exported
27:34Nearly 6 billion dollars
27:36Worth of goods
27:36To Canada
27:37While imports
27:38Totalled around
27:394 billion dollars
27:40In 2024
27:41Even as both nations
27:44Try to normalise
27:45Diplomatic relations
27:46India's key demand
27:50From Canada
27:50Remains
27:51Stronger action
27:52Against pro-Khalistan
27:53Extremists
27:54Operating on its soil
27:55It will also be looking
27:57To put to rest
27:58Allegations made
27:59By the Trudeau government
28:00Regarding the death
28:01Of Khalistani terrorist
28:02Chardeep Singh Nidjar
28:04New Delhi also seeks
28:07To resolve
28:08Persistent visa delays
28:10And ensure
28:11Smoother mobility
28:12For Indian students
28:13And professionals
28:14That have been
28:15Impacted since 2023
