Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has praised GB News journalist Charlie Peters as a "voice for the voiceless" following the government's decision to launch a national inquiry into grooming gangs.Speaking in the Commons, Badenoch welcomed the Prime Minister's acceptance of Conservative calls for a full statutory inquiry after what she described as "months of pressure"."We have finally reached this point and we must remember that this is not a victory for politicians, especially the ones like the Home Secretary who had to be dragged to this position or the Prime Minister," Badenoch said."This is a victory for the survivors who have been calling for this for years."Badenoch recognised former detective Maggie Oliver "whose courage in speaking truth to power has been instrumental in bringing us to this point" and the late journalist Andrew Norfolk for his "fearless journalism" that exposed these crimes."And Charlie Peters, who has consistently been a voice for the voiceless," Badenoch added, highlighting the GB News journalist's reporting on the scandal.WATCH THE CLIP ABOVE FOR MORE
00:00Mr Speaker, I'd like to thank the Right Honourable Lady for advanced sight of this statement.
00:05Although I must say, I couldn't believe my ears listening to the Home Secretary's statement as if this was their plan all along, when we all know it is another U-turn.
00:16After months of pressure, the Prime Minister has finally accepted our calls for a full statutory national inquiry into the grooming gangs.
00:24And I welcome that we have finally reached this point.
00:28And we must remember that this is not a victory for politicians, especially the ones like the Home Secretary who had to be dragged to this position or the Prime Minister.
00:37This is a victory for the survivors who have been calling for this for years.
00:43I have been speaking to many who do not have confidence that a government that ignored their concerns will deliver.
00:50But before I turn to the detail of the Home Secretary's statement, I want to recognise the tireless work of those who refuse to let this issue be buried.
01:00Survivors like Fiona Goddard, who bravely waived her anonymity.
01:04And the parents of survivors like Marlon West, who I spoke to this morning.
01:09Maggie Oliver, whose courage in speaking truth to power has been instrumental in bringing us to this point.
01:15The late Andrew Norfolk, whose fearless journalism brought peace of crimes to light.
01:21Baroness Casey for her review.
01:23And Charlie Peters, who has consistently been a voice for the voiceless.
