00:00In the whole month of June, we are exploring all different forms of contraception.
00:05And what is the common contraception?
00:08It is not condoms, it actually is coitus interruptus.
00:18What does coitus interruptus mean?
00:20In the colloquial terms, it actually just means withdrawal or pull-out technique.
00:25Meaning, no real form of contraception and then just prior to ejaculation pull-out of ejaculating inside the vagina.
00:33In fact, this sort of technique has been well described more than 2500 years
00:40when the Romans and the Greeks realised that ejaculation inside the actual vagina
00:46will result in pregnancy at some point, so therefore withdrawal of it actually will prevent the pregnancy.
00:53So, for somebody who are actually counting the time of ovulation
00:58and specifically pull-out and not ejaculating inside, how effective this is.
01:04Actually, in the United States, it is estimated that 38 million people
01:10which constitute about 10% of overall form of contraception
01:14according to the National Family Agency, actually show that this is the method of contraception.
01:21So, there must be some degree of effectiveness.
01:26According to the literature, it can be as good as 4% prevention of contraception
01:32and then as compared to something like 1% preventing pregnancy using condoms.
01:39So, is it really that high?
01:42In fact, it's 4% if it's used properly.
01:45But, typical use, it can be as high as 8% of failure rate.
01:51But, if you actually look at a woman who actually have 2 previous pregnancies,
01:58the chances of getting pregnant can be as high as 28% and therefore it's not really that good.
02:06Because what it means is 1 in 3 times you might end up having pregnancy.
02:11So, how is that the case?
02:13The case is like this.
02:14Because, in the pre-ejaculatory secretion of a man, constantly contains a bit of sperms.
02:22And that itself, even prior to ejaculation, has already induced probability of ejaculation-induced,
02:30or pre-ejaculation-induced pregnancy.
02:33So, therefore, some people believe that urination beforehand and urination in between sex might actually help.
02:41The reality is that that puts a lot of uncertainty into contraception, which is something that you don't want.
02:48So, for the following week, in the spirit of Father's Day as well,
02:53how do you make sure that you have absolute certainty?
02:58So, is there a way to make sure that you have sterilisation?
03:04We need to discuss about vasectomy and how effective is vasectomy.
03:08So, stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
