Civic groups have taken to the streets in Taipei, marching through the city to commemorate the 6th anniversary of a pivotal day during Hong Kong's anti-extradition movement, hoping to raise awareness and remind the public not to forget what happened in Hong Kong.  Six years ago on June 12, police in Hong Kong fired rubber bullets and tear gas into crowds of protestors, changing the nature of the anti-extradition movement, which continued on for months.

00:00Civic groups have taken to the streets in Taipei on the sixth anniversary of a
00:04grim day in Hong Kong. In 2019 there were huge protests in Hong Kong against a
00:10bill that would allow people to be extradited to mainland China. Those began
00:14peacefully but that changed on June 12th of that year when confrontations with
00:18police grew tense and police began firing tear gas and rubber bullets into
00:22crowds, the first time they've been used in decades. Some reportedly beat
00:26protesters. It's become known as the 6-1-2 incident and unrest continued for
00:31months afterward. Since then freedoms in Hong Kong have been curved further by
00:36Beijing with the territory using a national security law passed in 2020 to
00:40imprison pro-democracy activists. Here in Taipei this anniversary event was
00:45organized in the hopes that the public will continue to pay attention to the
00:48situation in Hong Kong and learn from Hong Kong's experience to stand up to
00:52China. More than 40 people from Hong Kong, Taiwan as well as other countries
01:14turned out even as it started raining, waving Hong Kong independence flags and
01:18chanting slogans.

01:47Facing its own threats from China, many people here in Taiwan care deeply about
01:52what's happening in Hong Kong, raising awareness for a key moment in Hong Kong's
01:55history and the state of the territory as a whole.
