00:00Now, the UN Ocean Summit is continuing today in Nice, in the south of France.
00:04Today on the agenda, discussions on ocean, on climate, on biodiversity and links,
00:09promoting and supporting all forms of cooperation.
00:12A little earlier I spoke to a reporter who's at the summit for us in Nice, Antonia Kerrigan.
00:18They're absorbing more than a quarter of our CO2 emissions.
00:22So today what we'll be looking out for is ways that they're talking about preserving
00:27and protecting that key property of the seas.
00:30I've spoken to scientists this week whose focus is carbon storage,
00:34studying how the carbon is mapped across the globe in different parts of the ocean
00:38and whether that storage is static, dynamic, how it operates,
00:42with a view to when we create marine protected areas,
00:46well, should we take into account where there's the most carbon storage?
00:49Should we be focusing on that as well as biodiversity concerns?
00:53Another thing we'll maybe hear a little bit about today is marine carbon dioxide removal.
00:58Now, that's more controversial.
01:00It's the idea that by adjusting pH in the oceans,
01:03by making the oceans slightly more alkaline, you can make them absorb more CO2.
01:09Now, of course, it sounds like an extremely convenient solution.
01:12Let's boost our number one carbon sink.
01:15But the scientific community issue a note of caution.
01:18They say, hold up.
01:19We don't know what the impacts could be on marine life.
01:22So the message will be from them to beware of two convenient solutions.
01:27We'll be looking out for all of that today at the conference.
