00:00I can't remember all the bad things that have happened to me as a restaurateur, the things that have broke, the fights that have happened in our bar, accidents, the slip and falls, so many different things that happened.
00:10But, you know, insurance is one of those things that you never want to pay for.
00:15It's like, oh, shit, I don't want to pay for it.
00:16But then when you need it, you really want to lean on a partner that can actually get something done and get you back up and running.
00:30Welcome to Restaurant Influencers presented by Entrepreneur.
00:34I'm your host, Sean Walshup.
00:35This is a Cali BBQ Media production in life, in the restaurant business and in the new creator economy.
00:42We learn through lessons and stories.
00:43We're grateful to Toast, our primary technology partner at our barbecue restaurants, for believing in this show, for giving us the opportunity to partner with Entrepreneur Magazine to tell stories of restaurateurs, of creators, of storytellers in this space.
00:58Today, we have Nick Rodriguez.
01:00You can find him at famous underscore creations underscore catering.
01:05You can find him up in Vacaville and Fairfield.
01:08Nick, welcome to the show.
01:10Thanks for having me.
01:11I really appreciate it.
01:12I appreciate you.
01:13This is a very difficult business.
01:16I've been running our restaurants here in San Diego for 17 years, and I keep telling myself that it's going to get easier.
01:23It doesn't, but it is a beautiful business.
01:26It's a food service business, hospitality, taking care of people.
01:30Can you give us a high level of what your store is all about and what you guys have created?
01:36What's so famous about your creations?
01:39You know what?
01:40We have over 150 different flavors of cupcakes to start off with.
01:44There's quite a few different things that we do here at Famous Creations, but one of the things is we have really crazy types of cupcakes, and we're starting to launch different flavors of cookies that are kind of like things you don't really hear.
01:59We have a chicken and waffle cupcake.
02:01We have a heart attack cupcake, which is like bacon and French toast and waffles, I think.
02:08I don't remember exactly what it is, but we do really over-the-top flavors.
02:12One of our signature cupcakes that people really love is a Patron Margherita.
02:17It was one of my favorite drinks back in the day when I started doing this for myself, and so I would go and have Patron Margheritas, and then I'd say, you know what?
02:27Let me make this into an actual cupcake.
02:29It is an actual lime cupcake base with Patron soaked into it, and then it has a little shooter of tequila in it.
02:40So it's a real-life margarita cupcake.
02:43That's amazing.
02:44How long have you guys been in business?
02:45How many employees do you have?
02:46How many stores?
02:48I've been in business for 12 years.
02:50I started out of my house and then opened up my first shop about a year and three months after I opened up in my home.
02:57We have about 15 employees, and I have two locations at this time.
03:02Amazing.
03:03What do you think has been the secret to staying in business all this time?
03:08Honestly, it's the customer service, and it's the love that we all put into everything that we do here that makes people want to keep coming back.
03:17And obviously, we have a good product.
03:18The product tastes delicious.
03:20It's good.
03:22But honestly, I think people can go anywhere and get a cake, but people want to come here because it's an experience.
03:27We give great customer service, beautiful cakes, delicious cakes.
03:31Overall, it's a great experience when our guests come in here from the time they walk in to the time they're cutting their cake.
03:38Bring me back to the beginning when you decided to take the entrepreneurial leap off the cliff and go into business for yourself.
03:45So it's actually kind of funny because I worked at AT&T, and I did not like working at AT&T.
03:51And I decided that I was going to get myself fired.
03:56And so before I did that, I did a charity event for AT&T called the March of Dimes, and I sold cupcakes and cookies out of my house.
04:03And I raised like $1,200 or $1,300.
04:05And then I left on vacation, and I came back, and I'm like, you know what?
04:10I think I'm getting fired today.
04:12And sure enough, I got fired.
04:13And then I was driving around like, what am I going to do?
04:16What the heck am I going to do?
04:18And so I went home, and I baked some cupcakes, and I threw them on my Instagram and my Facebook.
04:24And 12 years later, here I am.
04:27Wow.
04:27Yeah, it shot out.
04:29Like, business just rolled out because I'm from Fairfield.
04:33And so I had a lot of friends on social media.
04:35And so they were just posting and sharing and doing all these things.
04:38And it just kind of exploded.
04:40And to where I was able to open up my first shop without taking out a loan or anything,
04:45I was able to save enough money to do it on my own because I was doing so much work out of my house.
04:50And then we also started launching full-service catering with like tri-tip chicken and all these things.
04:56So it's a lot.
04:59It's a lot.
05:01We believe deeply in storytelling.
05:03Obviously, I built a media company on top of my barbecue restaurant.
05:07It gives me the opportunity to do really cool shit like this and have conversations with amazing people all over the globe.
05:15Most of the guests that we have on don't have a story like yours.
05:18You had a video go viral, 10.8 million views, I think, the last time I checked.
05:24Can you tell us the story of that troubling day, that video that you posted, and what happened as a result?
05:33Yeah.
05:34It was crazy because I was on my way to work and I was in a good mood.
05:39I was having a staff meeting.
05:40I had all these things.
05:41We're going to implement it with a new shop and all these things.
05:44And I am inside my shop.
05:47The doors open.
05:48And I hear this guy yelling at one of my employees, which at that time I didn't know it was one of my employees.
05:55And then I see this glass bottle be thrown across the, being thrown.
05:59And it hits the sidewalk and it skids out.
06:01So I go over there and I see him like yelling at my employee.
06:04So I stand there and I tell her, I said, get inside.
06:08And we have, I had eight females in here and a five-month-old baby girl in my shop.
06:16And so as he's coming to me, I'm a big guy.
06:20I don't care if he comes from me.
06:23You know, but he was drunk and he was mentally unstable and he was homeless, you know.
06:27I'm not going to walk up to this guy and just sock him in his mouth.
06:30So my intention was to shut the door and keep the girl safe.
06:35I don't know what this guy is capable of doing.
06:36I have no idea what's going to happen.
06:38I have no clue.
06:39So then he comes up to the glass door and he hits it.
06:42He hits the window.
06:44And then he goes off to the other direction.
06:48And at that point, I believe that one of the girls have already called the cops.
06:52That's what we're supposed to do when there are homeless guys around here.
06:56Loitering is we have to call the non-emergency.
06:57So I believe one of them already was on the phone with them.
07:01So then what the video was that you guys seen is him coming back up and walking by and throwing the bottle through the window.
07:11Through the bottle through the front of your store window.
07:14Yes, this huge, huge glass.
07:17It's huge.
07:18It's gigantic.
07:21And mind you, I just moved in here.
07:22I don't think I was in here for a full two weeks yet.
07:24So he threw the bottle and I gave, you know, reading off the description of him and, you know, met with Fairfield PD and I had to verify that it was him and all these things.
07:37But, you know, I guess, I don't know.
07:43The internet didn't like the fact that I said that I didn't get mad because it did go extremely viral.
07:49And there were a lot of hate comments towards me because I didn't get mad.
07:54And I'm still not mad.
07:55Like, me getting mad was not going to fix the window.
08:00Yeah.
08:00You know, it wasn't going to fix.
08:02Yeah.
08:02Did it suck?
08:02Yeah, it sucked.
08:03Like, no one wants to deal with that.
08:04But we shut the door.
08:06We got on the phone with Solano Glass and we, I continued my meeting and went on with my day, you know.
08:13And then people were mad online that I didn't beat his ass.
08:18And, you know, let's be real here.
08:21Had I did go out there and beat his ass, me being six foot one, 270 pounds, hitting a homeless man who was intoxicated and mentally unstable.
08:31What, what's the, what is that going to do?
08:34First of all, nothing is to make me look like a fucking bully.
08:37And second, you know, the internet would then say, why did you hit someone like that?
08:42Why did you do that?
08:43He would have broke the window and try to come in here to attack the girls.
08:47That's a whole nother story.
08:49But yeah, that's what happened.
08:51And we just, you know, they, they board up the window and, and, you know, that video went viral.
08:56We got like 5,000 new followers and, and people were trying to set up GoFundMes and stuff like that.
09:01I was like, no, no, no, don't, don't do that.
09:03Just, just come to the shop.
09:04Just come by and buy some cupcakes.
09:06So that's all I could ask for is just come, come be supportive.
09:11And they did.
09:12People came in here and they bought cupcakes.
09:14They bought a lot of cupcakes.
09:15They bought desserts.
09:16Some people never seen us before, never heard of us before.
09:19So they came down and checked us out.
09:20And, you know, it all worked out where the insurance actually covered it.
09:25I didn't think they were going to, because we just moved.
09:28I didn't change my address yet, but I guess I had a window period of when I moved.
09:34And so they, they took care of it and it all worked out.
09:39What would you do if a bottle smashed through your front window of your business today?
09:45How would you respond?
09:46This is exactly what happened to Nick Rodriguez from Famous Creations.
09:51And thanks to Next Insurance, he recovered from this horrible incident fast.
09:57Nick filed a claim on Friday, got paid on Monday, and had a brand new window installed
10:02by Thursday.
10:03That's the kind of speed and protection you want when your business is on the line.
10:07Running a restaurant isn't glamorous.
10:09It's long hours.
10:10It's hard work.
10:11And it's putting out fires every day.
10:13The last thing you need is a busted window, broken pipe, or some other disaster that prevents
10:19you from running your business.
10:20And then on top of the disaster, the last thing you want is getting buried in paperwork
10:25just to fix it.
10:26Next, understand small business owners.
10:28Plans start at just $25 and you can get a quote in less than 10 minutes.
10:32And you can actually buy a policy online without having to talk to someone if you want to move
10:38fast.
10:38You can also manage everything from their app and file claims 24-7.
10:43So whether you're in pizza, pasta, or poke bowls, make sure that your business is backed
10:48by coverage that gets it.
10:50Visit nextinsurance.com slash Calibbq, C-A-L-I-B-B-Q, and search Next Insurance on Google
10:58to get your quote today.
11:00And just a quick note, all claims are unique and handled according to relevant facts and
11:04policy documents.
11:05So this is, this is Next Insurance?
11:09Yeah.
11:09Next Insurance is the one that took care of us.
11:11And then we had them, one of the ladies that got us connected, she came out and did an
11:16interview and she did photos and stuff like that of the actual window being installed.
11:22How long, how long did it take?
11:24I mean, what kind of disruption did this glass breakage?
11:28It took six days.
11:30Six days?
11:31Six days for them to order the glass and have it installed.
11:36Really, the only, I mean, yes, having a broken glass is fun, but the only disruption really
11:42was just the ambiance.
11:43Like, if you've seen my shop, it's a beautiful shop.
11:46It's white, you've got white couches and these beautiful chandeliers, and there's this
11:51huge piece of wood.
11:53You know, it was, that's the really only disruption I feel like it had was, it was an eyesore.
12:00Yeah.
12:01I mean, I think, you know, shout out to Next for, you know, giving me the opportunity to
12:05meet people like you.
12:06I think one of the goals that I have with this show is to connect with companies and
12:11brands that help small business owners.
12:13As we know, like, I can't, I literally, I can't remember all the bad things that have
12:21happened to me as a restaurateur, the things that have broke the, you know, the fights that
12:26have happened in our bar, the, you know, accidents, the slip and falls, so many
12:29different things that happen.
12:31But, you know, for business owners, we're just trying to find the best partners that
12:35will step up when we need it.
12:36And I think, you know, insurance is one of those things that you never want to pay for.
12:41It's like, oh shit, I don't want to pay for it.
12:43But then when you need it, you really want to lean on a partner that can actually get
12:47something done and get you back up and running.
12:49Exactly.
12:50And, you know, I've never had to use my insurance before.
12:54I've had insurance for 12 years.
12:55I think I've had them for a year or two.
12:58Luke's, our other insurance dropped us because they're no longer providing insurance in
13:03California.
13:04Oh, wow.
13:05Yeah.
13:05So they dropped us.
13:06And then, so fortunately they picked us up real quick and it wasn't an issue, but I've
13:09never had to file a claim to do insurance before.
13:12I never had anything like that happen.
13:13Um, so it was really nice to be able to file the claim, talk to the guy.
13:20And then I had the money within like a day to, yeah, it was super quick, which was, which
13:25was great.
13:26That's great.
13:27When you think about building, creating, you said 150 different types.
13:33We have about 150 different flavors of cupcakes.
13:35Uh, how do you come up with a new flavor?
13:39You know, some of them are inspired.
13:41Um, I see things on social media.
13:44I'll see things on, you know, now it's like TikTok and, but a lot of them in the beginning
13:48was just my taste palette.
13:49I would think of certain things or look at things and kind of see how I would think about
13:54how it would taste if it was infused.
13:56And I just kind of, I created it.
13:59It was, I have a taste palette of like, I can think about it, I can taste it.
14:03So then I create it and then there it is.
14:06Um, it's kind of, it's kind of a gift and a curse, you know, you, you, you were sharing
14:12when you first started posting on Instagram and Facebook, um, you kind of had this, oh
14:17shit moment where people were coming and buying from your house, eventually started coming
14:20and buying from your shop.
14:22Can you share a little bit about how you've learned how to like think of it as a skill?
14:26You know, posting on social media, posting pictures, now posting videos.
14:31Yeah.
14:32Um, something that I do is I, I keep it authentic.
14:37I keep it me.
14:39Like when I, the first day I posted, I took four photos.
14:42It was four different cupcakes.
14:44I think it was, it was four flavors.
14:45And I posted those flavors and it was like, Hey guys, come on down.
14:49I have, you know, cupcakes.
14:51I'm here from this time or this time, whatever.
14:53Here's my address.
14:54It's my followers like to hear my voice in my text and not hear something scripted.
15:02So for me, I make sure that when I'm writing something, that it's something that I would
15:07say to someone.
15:08So when they're reading it, they hear my voice, they hear the authenticity and they're like,
15:12Oh, he's talking to me.
15:14He's going to come in and over.
15:15Let's go.
15:16Let's go see him.
15:17So that's what, what, what has worked for me.
15:19And, um, it's crazy what the power of social media does now is it is absolutely insane.
15:26How one wrong thing you're, you're blasted.
15:31One great thing you're blasted.
15:33Like you can, it can go so many different ways of social media.
15:36And I've seen both parts now, um, where that video, I turned the comments off finally,
15:43because, you know, I was reading them and I was liking them.
15:45I didn't really care because it's social media and I get it, but I was liking them to keep
15:49the algorithm going, but it got, it got a little overwhelming because it was on my, my phone
15:54was blowing up.
15:55And just the comments of talking about who I voted for and this is what I deserve and
16:00blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
16:01All of this crazy, crazy narrative.
16:05And then people were fighting with each other.
16:07Like someone would post something or comment and then someone would say something underneath
16:11and they were just, they were fighting and how they came to all these conclusions about
16:16me personally, who I voted for.
16:18And I should this and I'm this and blah, blah, blah over a man walking by and throwing a glass,
16:22a bottle through a window is crazy.
16:25Like there's nothing political on any of my social media.
16:29There's nothing that would, you would ever think who I did or didn't vote for.
16:34I just don't discuss it.
16:35Um, but yeah, I, I, that was probably like the worst experience that I had with social
16:41media, with the backlash and whatnot.
16:42But at the same time, I wasn't affected.
16:45I mentally knew like it's just words, whatever.
16:48But then I started seeing my followers go up, the supporters coming like, okay, well, this
16:52is, this is what matters.
16:53This is, this is the good that's coming from the bad.
16:56So, and there are people still are like, talk about it.
17:00Like, oh, sorry, your window broke.
17:02I'm like, come buy a cupcake, man.
17:03It's cool.
17:04Like that was like a month ago.
17:06We don't even, it's not even an issue no more.
17:07Uh, can you share for the business owner that's listening to this about just the power of,
17:13I mean, I, I, I speak a lot throughout the country to restaurant owners, encourage them
17:18to do what we call smartphone storytelling, take their phone out of their pocket, you know,
17:22use video.
17:23All of these tools are free.
17:24I mean, it's, you know, I opened in 2008 and there was just, I mean, I think Facebook
17:28started right around that time.
17:29So like what we have now with YouTube and Tik TOK and Instagram reels and podcasts, like
17:34there's so many tools available to us, but I think to your story, a lot of people are
17:40scared to post because it's not the perfect video or they think they look stupid or they
17:46think they sound stupid.
17:47Um, I, I have no, I, no, no problem.
17:51We made plenty of bad podcasts, plenty of bad videos.
17:53I have no problem putting it out there because I know the power of it.
17:56Otherwise I wouldn't be here, you know, having this conversation with you.
17:59Can you share some advice with the restaurant owner or business owner that's listening to
18:03this?
18:03That's thinking like, well, yeah, I don't, but I don't want the negativity.
18:07Like I'm worried about the negativity.
18:10Here's my, here's my best advice.
18:12Um, embrace the negativity because you're going to get it rather if it's someone coming in,
18:18that's going to give you a bad yelp review.
18:20Somebody that is going to come in and say that, oh, my food tastes like shit.
18:24I'm sending it back.
18:25Like embrace the negative because the positive will always outshine the negative.
18:29And it's okay.
18:31Um, like for me, Yelp, I stopped looking at my Yelp reviews.
18:35I get a lot of good ones.
18:36I get some bad ones.
18:37And in the beginning I would get so upset.
18:39I'm like, how can someone give me a bad Yelp review?
18:41You know, like I'm, I'm so good at what I do, but it's okay.
18:44Cause not everybody is going to like you.
18:48Not everyone's going to like your cupcakes.
18:49Not everyone's going to like your food.
18:50Like it's okay to not be liked.
18:53Um, but it's not okay to sit in that space of like, oh my God, they don't like me.
18:57Let me shut my business down.
18:58No.
18:59And you know, I, I think I paid for advertising once through a radio station.
19:07Everything else has been word of mouth and social media.
19:10I've never paid for advertising.
19:12Um, I used to do like the boost, the boosted posts with, with, uh, Facebook.
19:18Um, but now I don't really do them very often, but it's, it's okay.
19:22If you post a video that you may not like, or if one video gets, you know, 5,000 views
19:27and the other one gets two views, don't delete it.
19:30It's okay.
19:31You know, just, just embrace it, embrace the good, embrace the bad.
19:36Not every video is going to go viral and that everybody doesn't make money for you, but
19:39the ones that do capitalize on it and just, yeah, like just don't give up.
19:45Don't give up.
19:45Do not skip this ad.
19:48This is important information.
19:49I unboxed toast, our point of sale at our barbecue restaurants.
19:54And now here I am interviewing Shaquille O'Neal on the biggest stages.
19:59We want to hear your toast story.
20:02If you use toast in your restaurant, send me a message at Sean P.
20:07Walchef on Instagram, S H A W N P W A L C H E F.
20:13We want to hear your toast story.
20:15If you're thinking about switching to toast, we would love to help you.
20:18Please send us a message so that we can share your toast story today.
20:26What, uh, what did you learn going from one store to two stores?
20:32It's a lot of work.
20:33Um, how far away are your stores?
20:38How many driving distance?
20:40It's like 12 miles different.
20:42It's not, it's not that far, but my other location doesn't have a kitchen.
20:46So we do everything here in the fight in Fairfield.
20:49And then we take everything over to the back of the location.
20:51Um, it's, it's fun and it's great.
20:54And I loved when I have conversations with other business owners and I tell them, yeah,
20:58I have two locations.
20:59Like it's, it's nice to have that under your resume, you know, when you're a business owner.
21:06Um, it's just, it's, it's, it's a lot of work and then, you know, finding the right employee
21:12to run it and then find the right employee that you can trust.
21:15Um, making sure that this person loves your company, maybe like half as much as you do.
21:22So they do an amazing job because no one's ever going to love your company life like you
21:26do.
21:26Nobody ever will.
21:27Yeah.
21:27Um, you know, it's, it's just be ready for it.
21:31You know, my goal maybe next year is to have a third location.
21:38Amazing.
21:38A third.
21:39I wanted to have like four or five, but I think with having two for the last three years,
21:44I'm, I'm, I'm pretty sure I think three would be max.
21:47Yeah.
