00:00We got into the habit of turning our cameras off.
00:02Oh, God, help, please, don't do that.
00:06No, that's the worst.
00:08Being an entrepreneur, it's not easy.
00:11You might have people looking after your business,
00:13but who is looking after you?
00:15We are.
00:16Welcome to Entrepreneur Therapy.
00:19Presented by Amazon Business.
00:21In each episode, renowned health expert Dr. Drew Pinsky
00:24and serial investor Kim Perel
00:25will meet with small business owners
00:27looking for some advice.
00:29We're here to find out
00:30what issues still keep them up at night.
00:32My name's Katie Capps,
00:33and I'm co-founder, co-CEO of Higher Dose.
00:36And why are you on the show today?
00:38Like, what are you looking to get out of this experience?
00:41I'm having some challenges
00:42from a team, company culture, staffing point of view,
00:47where number one, we're all fully remote.
00:51So looking for some practical ways
00:53to still maintain that good culture,
00:57or even if we are fully remote.
00:59And then also, you know,
01:00I have tons of friends
01:01that I've hired throughout the years.
01:04So I'm hoping for some concrete ways
01:06to think about how I manage those complex relationships.
01:10Okay, Katie, so we're going to send you over
01:11to talk with Dr. Drew and Kim right now.
01:13Awesome.
01:14Today, we have from Higher Dose,
01:17Katie Capps, a wellness tech brand.
01:19We're excited to hear where your business is at.
01:22And how it got started, too.
01:23I need to hear that part.
01:24I started my career in investment banking,
01:26and about 10 years ago, I met my business partner.
01:29She introduced me to the infrared sauna,
01:32and I tried it once and was immediately addicted.
01:35So we launched our brand, Higher Dose,
01:37to bring infrared to the masses.
01:40So what are the challenges that you're currently facing?
01:43So we're a fully remote company.
01:45I think for us, it's particularly interesting
01:47because I split my time between Miami and Ohio.
01:52So I'm here in the States,
01:53but actually now my business partner
01:55is all the way in South Africa for half of the year.
01:58And our CFO spends about half of the year in Kazakhstan.
02:03And then, you know, our COO is often in China
02:06and South Korea and India meeting with suppliers, et cetera.
02:11So we really don't spend a lot of time
02:15in the same room together.
02:16And I think it creates a lot of communication issues.
02:19Is there a reason you're not meeting together on Zoom?
02:22We do, but we got into the habit
02:24of turning our cameras off.
02:26Oh, God help, please don't do that.
02:29No, that's the worst.
02:32From my experience, that is the ultimate.
02:37When you get on a Zoom meeting,
02:38everything's just dark and has their name.
02:41It's like someone's sitting in the bathtub,
02:43someone's walking their dog.
02:44I don't know what's going on.
02:45Exactly, yeah.
02:47And I guess it was kind of like nice at first
02:49because I felt like, oh, I can multitask.
02:52But you're right that it just really kind of kills the energy.
02:56Oh, my gosh.
02:57Yeah, but even you're thinking I can multitask,
02:59which is not what you should be thinking.
03:01You should be thinking I'm actually here
03:02to be present for this meeting and my team members.
03:05Even if in a time-limited way, for like 10 minutes,
03:07we're going to look at each other and what's on your mind,
03:09what's happening, and support each other for a second
03:11and answer questions.
03:12Well, here's what I do with all of my companies
03:15that I either advise or invest in or run.
03:18And I think it's we have one standing meeting.
03:20And I've worked out of Asia.
03:21I've worked out of Europe.
03:22I've worked all over the world in different time zones
03:24with different teams across many different countries.
03:27And it's having the consistency of at least one hour each week
03:32where you get on the call face-to-face
03:35and actually talk about the most important things
03:38that need to be done as a team.
03:40And I think also talk about the weekly win that you had
03:42so you can celebrate the successes.
03:44You can talk about the biggest challenge
03:45and the top priorities for the month.
03:47I mean, it's so important.
03:49And it at least creates a cohesiveness
03:51that's a red thread that runs through the company
03:54even when you're not together.
03:55Otherwise, it's not really a team.
03:57You're absolutely right.
03:58Just keeping the camera on so we have a sense of connection
04:01and maybe even shortening the meeting a little bit
04:04and just saying, like, when we're here,
04:06we're going to be present.
04:07We're going to have the camera on
04:09and we can, you know, make it 25% shorter.
04:12What, for you personally,
04:14what kind of challenges are you finding?
04:16I have many amazing friends in my life.
04:21And as I've been building my business,
04:23we'll have a need for a certain hire
04:26and then friends will come to mind,
04:28which is great at first because I trust them.
04:31Like, I know they'll get the job done.
04:33But in some situations,
04:35it's become awkward to navigate
04:38how I continue having a friendship with these people,
04:42but then also be a boss.
04:44That's right.
04:45Right. So it's one thing to be friendly,
04:48which has its own problems,
04:49just being a friendly boss.
04:50But being a friend and boss,
04:52that's what we call a dual relationship.
04:55Yeah.
04:55And those are very difficult to navigate.
04:58And some personalities,
05:00certain proclivities can't do it.
05:03I don't know if that's what you're dealing with,
05:05with some of your friends,
05:06but at some point,
05:09one of the relationships has to cease.
05:11And by the way,
05:12it's not impossible
05:14that you end the friendship
05:15insofar as I'm your boss
05:17and hope we can revisit the friendship again someday.
05:20It's great to hear that from you
05:22because I think that's somewhat of the conclusion
05:25that I've come to.
05:26And my strategy has been kind of distancing the friendships.
05:31So the problem, though,
05:32is if you just distance,
05:35they're going to feel abandoned
05:36and people have differing reactions to that feeling.
05:40And they might easily start to build resentments.
05:43And then you're going to see something called a splitting behavior
05:46where they start saying,
05:47oh, I can't stand the boss.
05:49So-and-so over here is great.
05:51I'm going to align with her against the boss.
05:52So you may, I'm not telling you what to do,
05:55but you may have to be a little more direct
05:58with whomever this person is
05:59and say, you know,
06:01I don't know how you'd exactly phrase it,
06:04but rather than just pulling away,
06:06you're going to have to say something more directive
06:08so they don't concoct things in their own mind
06:11about why you're pulling away.
06:14That's great feedback.
06:15Yeah, at the end of the day,
06:16business is personal.
06:18Katie, congratulations.
06:19This business sounds very exciting.
06:21And we look forward to seeing you again,
06:24future progress.
06:25I want to use all these products.
06:26I know, right?
06:27I'll send you bundles.
06:29I love it.
06:29What do you think?
06:30Excellent.
06:31Completely in.
06:32Yes, we wish you luck.
06:34We'll send you back to Brad.
06:35Katie, how are you feeling right now?
06:37That was, that went deep.
06:39I was surprised if like both of them
06:42were just so perceptive.
06:44I was like, oh my gosh,
06:45I totally want to pay for entrepreneur therapy next time.
06:49Like, this is incredible.
06:50I mean, you said you should be paying us.
