00:00Burnout is essentially workaholism.
00:02He's selling alcohol. I mean, you're out there, Joey. You've got to be out all night.
00:06Sometimes you've got to pour the drink into the plant or toss one behind your neck.
00:09Being an entrepreneur is not easy.
00:12You might have people looking after your business, but who is looking after you?
00:16We are. Welcome to Entrepreneur Therapy.
00:20Presented by Amazon Business.
00:21In each episode, renowned health expert Dr. Drew Pinsky and serial investor Kim Perel
00:26will meet with small business owners looking for some advice.
00:30We're here to find out what issues still keep them up at night.
00:33My name is Joey Antelow. I am the founder of Sip Margs.
00:39It's an incredible canned cocktail.
00:41I'm also the founder, it's actually right there.
00:43I'm also the founder of Tsukasa Mezcal and that beautiful blue bottle.
00:47Tell me about the show today.
00:49Like, why are you here to be on Entrepreneur Therapy?
00:53I just want to hang out with you, Brad. Next question, please.
00:56It's a little bit of both.
00:57I'm a huge fan of Kim and, you know, she's in the same space.
01:00So I'd love to kind of dig in and ask her some particular questions on the business side.
01:05And then in terms of Dr. Drew, being an entrepreneur, it's a tough thing.
01:09You don't have a lot of support.
01:11You're kind of, you're out there by yourself.
01:13And I kind of want to make sure I'm doing everything right here.
01:16All right, Joey, it's time for you to go talk to Dr. Drew and Kim.
01:20I can't wait. I'm really excited. Let's do it.
01:23Joey, welcome. What's going on?
01:25I understand you had a specific question for me. What is that?
01:28Burnout, Dr. Drew, is what I wanted to kind of talk to you about.
01:31You know, this business in particular, you know, Kim knows, it's brutal.
01:35You know, a lot of late nights, a lot of early mornings, and especially with this stuff.
01:41But, you know, I'm a big fitness guy. That's super important.
01:43That's the first thing I do every morning, non-negotiable.
01:46But I don't suffer from burnout, but I fear burnout.
01:51Are there any entrepreneurs that don't experience some degree of burnout?
01:53I mean, it's sort of like...
01:54It's really hard to balance.
01:56Yeah, I mean, you're going to take it to a point where there is at least a burnout approaching, right?
02:00Yeah, for sure.
02:01Under burnout is, you know, sort of what creates burnout if you actually get there is essentially workaholism, right?
02:07As you said, Joey, you're making sure you work out every day. Crucial.
02:11And sometimes you have to keep it really basic. Hungry, angry, lonely, tired, right?
02:15So I guess you're eating properly, right? If you're a fitness guy, you're eating properly.
02:20Lonely. What's going on with your relationships?
02:22Personal relationships are good.
02:23I guess if there was, to answer your question, I think maintaining those relationships.
02:29And that probably leads into the burnout piece.
02:33Am I making time for everybody equally? I guess it's never equal.
02:38When we, and I'm including myself in this, develop workaholism, nobody suffers more than our spouse and our children.
02:44They're the ones that really suffer the consequences.
02:47I think of being an entrepreneur, and then you think of being an athlete.
02:51Athletes have on-season and off-season.
02:54Entrepreneurs are hustling all the time.
02:57100%.
02:57Great word, hustling, yeah.
02:59Right? They're hustling all the time.
03:01And by the way, I was a physician working for me, 5 in the morning to 10 at night.
03:05It never ends.
03:06There are certain careers that lend themselves, if you're doing them, frankly, if you're doing them properly, you almost have to do it this way.
03:14From my experience, what I found is setting great boundaries and making sure that I stick to them.
03:20So really knowing what time I'm on and actually what time I'm off and I'm prioritizing my family.
03:27And I block that just as I would a meeting or I would, that's something that's non-negotiable.
03:33He's selling alcohol.
03:34I mean, you're out there, Joey.
03:35You got to be out all night.
03:37You got to learn a little trick.
03:38Sometimes you got to pour the drink into the plant or toss one behind your neck.
03:41But how do you set yourself up for that sustainable long-term success, which you have two alcohol brands, it looks like.
03:49How much are you spending time on one versus the other?
03:53And how do you prioritize that time against family, against your relationships?
03:57You have so many competing interests.
03:59I guess, you know, if I have one word, discipline.
04:02I'm a very, very disciplined person.
04:05So I make the time.
04:07And I prioritize the time.
04:09But often, to answer your question, Kim, a lot of the brands kind of come together.
04:13Often it's, you know, unless it's like super fine dining where maybe the cans are unapplicable.
04:18But often it's the same buyer and there are a lot of synergies.
04:21You know, I think being very, very disciplined and I think planning.
04:25I plan my weeks, minimum two weeks in advance.
04:29Like there's never a situation where I wake up and like, oh, what do I do today?
04:32I mean, that will never happen in a million years.
04:34But at 3 a.m., and I've been there, you wake up sometimes at 3 a.m.
04:38What is keeping you up?
04:40What's waking you up at 3 a.m.?
04:41Because entrepreneurs wake up and things are racing.
04:44What is that that's waking you up?
04:45Oh, that's a straight Kim question.
04:48You ready?
04:49I'm ready.
04:49What keeps me up at night?
04:51I need a megaphone.
04:52Like, you know, I just told you how well the brands are doing.
04:55And how do I get that out there?
04:57You know, with limited budgets and, you know, not a ton of social or marketing or PR.
05:01And those luxuries for a startup.
05:03How do I use the microphone better?
05:05Or the megaphone, rather.
05:06And get the word out how well we are doing.
05:08Yeah, it's your customers.
05:10They love the product.
05:11So continuing to drive home the authenticity of your customers in creating that community will drive the virality that you're seeking.
05:18I think everyone thinks, oh, I've got to get a great big influencer.
05:21But at the end of the day, it's the customers that really count.
05:24And them telling, oh, my gosh, have you tasted this amazing mezcal?
05:28Yeah.
05:29Well, part of our job here is assessment.
05:31And sometimes our assessments can be that things are pretty good.
05:35We have a lot of little, we both have a lot of little suggestions for them.
05:37But we're not, I'm not like what I'd call worried about you, Joey.
05:40I think just finding what is the balance that you can create in your life, with your spouse, with yourself.
05:47And continuing to set the boundaries to ensure that you don't get the burnout.
05:51Yep.
05:51It's been amazing, Joey.
05:53And we wish you all the best.
05:55Thank you for the time.
05:56Really appreciate it, guys.
05:57Tell me, how are you feeling right now?
05:59They said they're not worried about you.
06:01That seems good.
06:03Maybe we should do it over.
06:04They should be.
06:05I have this feeling that I'm doing everything right.
06:09And they just confirmed it.
06:10Joey, thank you so much for participating in Entrepreneur Therapy, presented by Amazon Business.
06:15To say thank you, we're giving you $1,000 in cash.
06:20I'm not going to say no to that, Brad.
06:21I really appreciate that.
06:22Thank you very much.
