00:00Next month marks, unbelievably, 30 incredible years of David Nielsen playing Roy,
00:06a character he loves and remains as passionate about and protective over as when he first pops
00:13up as Deirdre's potential stalker all those years ago. He's brought warmth, wisdom and real humanity
00:20to the cobbles and into the living rooms of millions of viewers. So, before we bring him
00:26on stage, let's take a moment to remember just why Roy Cropper is one of the all-time greats.
00:40You must be Roy. That's it. David Nielsen is a very intelligent, very thoughtful, kind man and I'm
00:48very fond of him. Good morning. Morning Roy. He's just a legend isn't he? He is fun, he's a mentor,
00:56he's an inspiration. Working with him is an actor's dream. You are truly learning from the best.
01:05What the flaming hell was you doing down there? Investigating for phenomena. He was a little
01:12strange at the beginning. You know, when he first came into Coronation Street, people weren't sure
01:17about him, me as a fan, I watched and thought, oh, who is this man? Are you going to put these salt
01:23sellers on the table or shall I? He's absolutely developed that character
01:27and made him one of the most loved characters in the history of soap.
01:31You know, the bag was very much his idea and was his mother's bag.
01:36Police, can you let me in? Certainly.
01:3930 years on the street, nearly 3,000 episodes and one tote bag.
01:44Do you mind? Apart from all the complexities, he's still lovable.
01:50What do you think? Have you not got a coat?
01:52Everybody knows Roy Cropper. Everybody. And I think that says a lot about the character,
01:59but also David and his commitment to the character and what he's managed to create
02:03over all these years. It's pretty special. Roy Cropper and Hayley are the most iconic
02:10partnership, I think, in soap. I will.
02:12We all were heartbroken when he lost his beloved Hayley.
02:20David has given a gift to Coronation Street that it needs, which is depth and strength
02:26and character. Is that a joke, Roy Cropper?
02:28Right, right nearly. It's down to him that he's still here because he's so perfect.
02:34It's a privilege and an honor to work with somebody like David. He's an absolute GM.
02:39Massive congratulations on this award, David.
02:43You're one of the finest actors I've ever had the privilege of working with.
02:47And more importantly to me, you are also one of the best human beings I know.
02:52I don't quite know what it is you do, David, or what you've done to Roy Cropper,
02:56but whatever it is, keep on doing it. It's brilliant.
03:00Roy Cropper, I love you. Oh boy, I do. But David Nielsen, I love you more.
03:07David, we all love you so much.
03:11Thank you for everything.
03:13The outstanding achievements award goes to David Nielsen.
03:25Mirly Johnson.
03:27Thank you. It was a beautiful place.
03:29Thank you. It's a beautiful place.
03:31Shalala.
03:33Thank you. It's your actual back.
03:35I'll take care of it.
03:37Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
03:41Shall I look after her and spew an actual bag?
03:46I'll take care of her.
03:53Thank you, thank you.
03:59Good job I showed up.
04:06I never really wanted to be an actor.
04:08I just didn't like going to work.
04:13And just over 30 years ago,
04:17I did confide in my friend Stephen Malatrack
04:20that I thought it might be time to do the sensible thing,
04:24settle down, get a proper job.
04:27A couple of months later, I got the call from Coronation Street
04:29to go up for the part of Roy Cropper, six episodes.
04:33And Stephen had written one of those episodes.
04:36But the breakdown for the character was something like a bit of a pest.
04:42Could be a stalker.
04:44Where's too many man-made fibres?
04:48Stands too close.
04:50Might be daft, could be dangerous.
04:52And he thought of me.
04:57Thank goodness.
05:01And there are so many people that I should be thanking.
05:04But one name, of course, that has to be mentioned.
05:09Julie Hesmond-Hulsh.
05:10And then there are people from B.C., the period B.C.,
05:20which is before Cropper, in our house.
05:25My gorgeous wife, Jane, who has supported me
05:29and put up with me for over half a century
05:37by son Daniel, who endured secondary school,
05:42being known as the kid of Roy Cropper.
05:45But he has forgiven us
05:47and rewarded us
05:49with two gorgeous grandchildren.
05:55Erin and Rosa,
05:58you make my heart burst.
06:01I am a very lucky man.
06:03Have a great evening.
06:06Huge congratulations to David.
