00:00This past weekend, federal agents conducted large-scale workplace raids in and around
00:04Los Angeles.
00:06Those raids continue as I speak.
00:09California is no stranger to immigration enforcement, but instead of focusing on undocumented immigrants
00:14with serious criminal records and people with final deportation orders, a strategy both
00:19parties have long supported, this administration is pushing mass deportations, indiscriminately
00:26targeting hard-working immigrant families, regardless of their roots or risk.
00:32In response, Everyday Angelenos came out to exercise their constitutional right to free
00:38speech and assembly, to protest their government's actions.
00:43In turn, the state of California and the city and county of Los Angeles sent our police officers
00:49to help keep the peace, and with some exceptions, they were successful.
00:54If you incite violence or destroy our communities, you're going to be held to account.
00:59That kind of criminal behavior will not be tolerated, full stop.
01:03Already more than 220 people have been arrested, and we're reviewing tapes to build additional
01:08cases and people will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
01:13Again, thanks to our law enforcement officers and the majority of Angelenos who protested peacefully,
01:20the situation was winding down and was concentrated in just a few square blocks downtown.
01:27But that, that's not what Donald Trump wanted.
01:30He again chose escalation.
01:32He chose more force.
01:34He chose theatrics over public safety.
01:37Donald Trump, without consulting California law enforcement leaders, commandeered 2,000 of
01:44our state's National Guard members to deploy on our streets, illegally and for no reason.
01:51This brazen abuse of power by a sitting president inflamed a combustible situation, putting our
01:56people, our officers, and even our National Guard at risk.
02:02These are the men and women trained for foreign combat, not domestic law enforcement.
02:07We honor their service.
02:08We honor their bravery.
02:10But we do not want our streets militarized by our own armed forces.
02:15Not in LA, not in California, not anywhere.
02:19Trump is pulling a military dragnet all across Los Angeles, well beyond his stated intent to
02:26just go after violent and serious criminals.
02:29His agents are arresting dishwashers, gardeners, day laborers, and seamstresses.
02:35That's just weakness, weakness masquerading as strength.
02:40Donald Trump's government isn't protecting our communities, they're traumatizing our communities.
02:45And that seems to be the entire point.
02:48Just yesterday, we filed a legal challenge to Donald Trump's reckless deployment of American
02:54troops to a major American city.
02:56Today we sought an emergency court order to stop the use of the American military to engage
03:02in law enforcement activities across Los Angeles.
03:06If some of us could be snatched off the streets without a warrant, based only on suspicion
03:11or skin color, then none of us are safe.
03:15And we all know this Saturday, he's ordering our American heroes, the United States military,
03:20and forcing them to put on a vulgar display to celebrate his birthday.
03:26Just as other failed dictators have done in the past.
03:30California may be first, but it clearly will not end here.
03:33Other states are next.
03:35Democracy is next.
03:38Democracy is under assault before our eyes.
03:40This moment we have feared has arrived.
