French Senate backs law to regulate ultra fast fashion giants Shein and Temu

The new legislation would impose eco-taxes, advertising bans, and influencer restrictions, but critics believe the bill falls short of its initial environmental ambitions.

00:00Cheap to buy and quick to toss, fast fashion has flooded the French market.
00:06In the country alone, 35 clothing items are thrown away every second.
00:11And now, French lawmakers are trying to rein it in.
00:15On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate gave sweeping support to a new bill aimed at regulating the industry.
00:22The target, Chinese giants like Xi'in and Timu accused of pushing low-cost clothes at a high environmental cost.
00:31The proposed law introduces eco-taxes of up to 10 euros per item by 2030,
00:38bans advertising and restricts influencers from promoting such brands.
00:43But critics argue the law has been watered down under pressure from the fast fashion lobbies.
00:49European brands like Zara and H&M are spared from the harshest sanctions.
