00:04Hi, I'm Richard Ingman, Vicar of Crofton Parish.
00:10Who's the most encouraging person in your life?
00:13Do you know anyone who is just ridiculously positive and affirming,
00:17who always makes you feel better and braver?
00:20Today, Christians remember Barnabas, whose name means son of encouragement.
00:25You can read Barnabas' story in the book of Acts.
00:27He believed in people and never wrote anyone off.
00:31Barnabas was the one who gave Paul the Apostle his start.
00:34Paul went on to write a quarter of the New Testament
00:36and started churches all around the Mediterranean.
00:40When Paul gave up on a young man called Mark,
00:43Barnabas supported Mark, looked after him,
00:46and Mark went on to write the Gospel of, well, Mark.
00:50I am a pathological encourager.
00:52I love seeing people try things, succeed and grow in their gifts and skills.
00:56I love that line by Walt Whitman.
00:59Be curious, not judgmental.
01:01You can't encourage someone if you've already written them off.
01:05You may not have had much encouragement in your life.
01:08Maybe you got written off at some stage.
01:10But some of the most encouraging people I know have had the most difficult lives.
01:15Whether you've ever had a Barnabas or not, you can be a Barnabas to someone else.
01:19How different would the world be if we chose today to encourage someone else
01:25to help us remember St. Barnabas, the son of encouragement.
