Analysts weigh in on Apple's latest software developments at WWDC 25

Apple announced on Monday, June, a host of new features at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California.

Among them, the company said it will open up the company's language model to developers, which will allow its Apple Intelligence feature to interact with third-party apps.

"This is the most significant tool that they're able to deliver to developers so that they can take advantage of Apple Intelligence on-device," said Carolina Milanesi, a technology analyst.

Bob O'Donnell, another analyst, was impressed by the latest update to iPad OS, which will now allow users to have multiple app windows open at once.

00:00I think the most significant development that we saw today at the keynote was
00:05Apple opening up their language model to developers. This is, we need to remember,
00:10that FDC is their developer conference and this is the most significant tool that
00:15they're able to deliver to developers so that they can take advantage of
00:19Apple Intelligent on device in a secure and private way, but also for
00:24especially smaller developers being able to do so without the added cost of using
00:28the model in the cloud. This year we're doing something new and
00:32we think it's going to be pretty big. We're opening up access for any app
00:37to tap directly into the on-device large language model at the core of
00:42Apple Intelligence with a new foundation models framework. This gives
00:47developers direct access to intelligence that's powerful, fast, built with
00:52privacy and available even when you're offline. We think this will ignite a whole
00:57new wave of intelligent experiences in the apps you use every day. For example,
01:03if you're getting ready for an exam, an app like Kahoot can create a
01:06personalized quiz from your notes to make studying more engaging. And because it
01:11uses on-device models, this happens without cloud API costs. Or perhaps you're
01:17camping off-grid, poring over the hikes you downloaded to AllTrails. Just describe what you're in the mood for, and AllTrails can use our on-device models to save the
01:25best option.
01:31So by far the most exciting thing today I think was iPadOS, because what we finally saw in iPadOS was a true computer
01:40multi-tasking kind of an operating system. We've got multiple overlapping windows, we have a file system, we have folders and ways to interact with the device that felt very much like a touch-based computer. You know, and so the big question then is, well, why? Well, people have been asking for this for a long time. But I think there are some
01:49factors driving this. Number one, I think Apple's more confident in how the Mac is going to continue to do in its current shape. And frankly, number two, the iPad has been, you know, facing some challenges. It doesn't have the same level of robust growth that we've seen in the past. So I think Apple needed to build
02:06up the excitement around the iPad. This is what you've all been waiting for, a new windowing system on iPad. It's designed for the unique qualities of iPad and delivers on what users are asking for with a collection of powerful features that help you control,
02:21arrange and switch between your windows. Liquid glass was a big part of the presentation here at Apple today. And I, for me, what was really interesting is, first of all, the influence that you see from vision OS and, and the
02:39new UI really brings the content and the interaction between me as a user and that content really front and center and almost makes the, um, hardware disappear.
03:03With the optical qualities of glass and a fluidity that only Apple can achieve, it transforms depending on your content or even your context and brings more clarity to navigation and controls. It beautifully refracts light and dynamically reacts to your movement with specular highlights.
03:23This material brings a new level of vitality to every aspect of your experience from the smallest elements you interact with to larger ones. It responds in real time to your content and your input, creating a more lively experience that we think you'll find truly delightful.
