00:00:00June 7, 1996. Oscar De La Hoya reaffirmed his status as one of the best, beating boyhood idol and living legend Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:00:11But an early Chavez cut made De La Hoya's victory too easy. It would haunt both of them for two years.
00:00:19This is youth, talent and ambition against experience, will and pride.
00:00:24And Chavez is already starting to flow above the left thigh.
00:00:28It's very early in the fight for blood to be showing.
00:00:31And now Joe Cortez stops because he wants a doctor to take a look at the cut. Round one.
00:00:37And this blood started flowing less than a minute into the fight.
00:00:40That cut was open in training, you can believe that.
00:00:43Round one has been like Christmas for Oscar De La Hoya.
00:00:47It's no problem, no problem.
00:00:49Arlington by Thomas.
00:00:51That is the third good left hook that Chavez has landed.
00:00:54And the blood bothering Julio as De La Hoya lands a vicious left hook.
00:00:58Now his nose is bleeding too.
00:01:00Chavez's will seeming to be sapped now.
00:01:03As in the last minute of round four, it's been all Oscar De La Hoya.
00:01:07He's calling the fight. The fight is over.
00:01:12While De La Hoya was widely praised, there was one noteworthy detractor.
00:01:16Julio Cesar Chavez infuriated Oscar by refusing to give him credit for the victory.
00:01:22I will make sure I get that respect after this fight.
00:01:25September 18, the rematch.
00:01:28De La Hoya waged his personal war for respect as Chavez battled for revenge and a return to glory.
00:01:34Back live at ringside in Vegas before we go back to look at the fight.
00:01:41A couple of comments beforehand.
00:01:43Larry Merchant, a lot of people expected De La Hoya Chavez 2 to be a mismatch, a wipeout.
00:01:48In the end, it was not.
00:01:49It was a considerably more exciting fight than almost all of us expected.
00:01:53Why?
00:01:54Well, low expectations always helps you.
00:01:57As well as an aging champion who wanted to show what he once was.
00:02:03And as well as a young champion wanting to take vengeance for a victory.
00:02:10What a concept.
00:02:11He had beaten Chavez earlier, as you recall, in four rounds.
00:02:17Chavez put him down for it.
00:02:19De La Hoya took the opportunity to say he wanted to beat him worse, to stop him, make
00:02:25twelve million dollars while he was doing it.
00:02:28And he did it.
00:02:29And in the process, he even got more than he asked for.
00:02:33And so did we.
00:02:34It was an intensely competitive bout.
00:02:36As you're about to see, George Foreman, before we look at it.
00:02:39How much of the relatively close competition and the intensity throughout much of the fight
00:02:45was the product of Oscar De La Hoya fighting a style that benefited Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:02:49How much of it was a proud last stand for the old warrior?
00:02:53I think Oscar De La Hoya had to dig in deep to really get that performance that he gave
00:02:58out this time around.
00:02:59The champion, the ex-champion, Chavez was ready.
00:03:02He stepped out of range, stepped into range.
00:03:04He did everything that you would ask of a fellow to take a title.
00:03:07De La Hoya abandoned his left jab and it was a toe-to-toe knockdown drag out.
00:03:12As you're about to see.
00:03:13So if this is your first chance to watch Oscar De La Hoya and Julio Cesar Chavez the
00:03:18second time around, you're going to enjoy it.
00:03:20Let's go back to September 18, 15 days ago in this city.
00:03:27For the second time, Julio Cesar Chavez against Oscar De La Hoya.
00:03:33But this time, two years later, and at significantly different stages of their two careers,
00:03:39then was the case June 7, 1996.
00:03:43Ultimate revenge, they called it.
00:03:45But who was it who was looking for revenge?
00:03:48The man who lost the first fight in the fourth round technical knockout?
00:03:51Or the man who won the first fight, but didn't think he got the respect he deserved?
00:03:56In the Thomas and Mac center, but for a nearly full house, they got ready to answer those questions.
00:04:03Two years, three months, 11 days after their first meeting, the tale of the tape for Oscar
00:04:09De La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez the second time.
00:04:13De La Hoya, 11 years younger, three and a half inches taller.
00:04:18He weighed in much closer to the 147 pound limit.
00:04:21Chavez admitting to us yesterday, I just can't get all the way up to 147 pounds while I'm in training.
00:04:26And a five inch reach advantage for De La Hoya.
00:04:29Chavez wouldn't get on a scale tonight.
00:04:31Oscar weighed 162 pounds as he waited in the locker room to come out to the ring for the fight.
00:04:38Punch that numbers, Larry.
00:04:39These are the numbers from the first fight.
00:04:41Of course, it was over in the first minute of the fight.
00:04:45So these numbers may not reflect the actual differences between the fighters.
00:04:50But since that time, they've fought a good fighter in Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:04:55Here were the numbers in that fight.
00:04:57And as you can see, De La Hoya more active, far more accurate than Chavez.
00:05:04Showing his age.
00:05:06Rules of the bout for their unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Lederman.
00:05:10The Oscar de La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:05:15Using the standardized rules of boxing for old world championship fights.
00:05:19There is no standing eight count.
00:05:21No three knockdown rule.
00:05:22Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:05:24And he cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:05:27Including the 12th and final round.
00:05:31Supercesto!
00:05:33You saw the graphic showing you the six instances in which Chavez has won a world championship.
00:05:45Never beyond 140 pounds.
00:05:48One big difference between this fight and its predecessor.
00:05:52Tonight, the weight limit is 147.
00:05:54Back in 1996, they were fighting at 140.
00:05:58A weight much closer to an effective weight for Chavez.
00:06:02This cheering is a tribute to a prized fighter who won the hearts of his countrymen with his skill and his bravery.
00:06:11And his bravery.
00:06:18Julio Cesar Chavez believes this is his 106th fight.
00:06:24We have very carefully checked official records here and in Mexico.
00:06:28And we are convinced it is his 105th that he has fought 104 times.
00:06:33Winning 100.
00:06:35Losing to De La Hoya and to Frankie Randall.
00:06:38And draws with Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:06:43And of course the famous draw with Brunel Whitaker in San Antonio five years ago.
00:06:48De La Hoya will enter wearing the same robe and the same garb that he wore to enter the ring in 1996.
00:07:02The reason?
00:07:03He says this is unfinished business.
00:07:06He thinks the first round of this fight is the fifth round of the last fight.
00:07:11The first round of the last fight.
00:07:36another crowd love fest for de la oia there's the reason why
00:08:0528 wins no losses no draws 23 ko's for the welterweight champion and the man regarded

00:12:32and in you know the order of a golden boy
00:12:34Oscar
00:12:35Oscar
00:12:36Delo
00:12:38Ahoy!
00:13:03Okay, we've both been here many times before.
00:13:08The rules and regulations still remain the same.
00:13:11And I will enforce them.
00:13:13Shake hands and good luck.
00:13:19Chavez has not beaten a top fighter in the eight years
00:13:25since his dramatic victory over Mildred Taylor.
00:13:28His task tonight, to beat a top fighter who is bigger and younger.
00:13:38There's been a lot of speculation in recent days
00:13:41about whether Julio Cesar Chavez
00:13:43is legitimately conditioned for this fight.
00:13:46He knows what was written about him in the Los Angeles Times
00:13:48by Bill Klaski three days ago.
00:13:50Klaski said that he spent 24 hours in Breckenridge, Colorado,
00:13:53at Chavez's training camp,
00:13:55and Chavez never lifted a glove during the period of time he was there.
00:13:59So Julio pulled his shirt off for us yesterday
00:14:01and said,
00:14:02Look at my hard belly.
00:14:03Look at my muscles.
00:14:04I lifted weights.
00:14:05I'm ready.
00:14:06He'll need it.
00:14:08Chavez's job tonight is to stop the block
00:14:11and get out of the way of everything.
00:14:13Don't get touched by any of Oscar's shots.
00:14:16Oscar's got to keep his bounce.
00:14:18Don't move forward unless you've got a plan.
00:14:23Chavez staying at a distance to begin round one.
00:14:27Oscar just waiting and measuring
00:14:29and looking for a chance to throw his jab.
00:14:33Oscar, I said about the power of any of these big guns,
00:14:36they have their range.
00:14:38He cannot reach out beyond his feet.
00:14:40So stay out there.
00:14:41Make him stick out and reach out
00:14:45and eventually close in.
00:14:47That's what Chavez must do.
00:14:49He need only to look at that picture
00:14:52to see part of the problem facing Julio.
00:14:55Oscar is simply a bigger man.
00:14:58Julio is doing good.
00:14:59He's landed a shot.
00:15:00Now he moves away.
00:15:01Let Oscar come and pay him back.
00:15:06De La Hoya, in recent fights,
00:15:09has never minded being patient in round one,
00:15:12even against Patrick Charpentier in El Paso.
00:15:14When it was clear Charpentier couldn't hurt him at all,
00:15:16he waited until opportunities opened up.
00:15:19The Oscar danger zone is when he starts jumping
00:15:22and leaping around.
00:15:23So as long as he's not jumping,
00:15:25you can do anything you want.
00:15:26But once he gets the bounce in his legs,
00:15:28stay out of his way.
00:15:29Chavez is doing a good job of that.
00:15:31Once he starts bouncing, move.
00:15:33Because when De La Hoya gets the bounce in his legs,
00:15:35that means he's seen something.
00:15:37And his hands start to move more freely, right?
00:15:39There you are.
00:15:40You make him, you just block, stop,
00:15:42and get out of the way of everything
00:15:43for the first four or five rounds.
00:15:49Chavez, right?
00:15:51Garvin was moving away.
00:15:52Yep.
00:15:53A very tactical first round so far.
00:15:56Chavez trying to lure De La Hoya into something.
00:16:01Steps over to his left.
00:16:03A double-e-chavez left hooks early.
00:16:04There's a Chavez left jab.
00:16:05Right here, too.
00:16:06Chavez has got to be careful now
00:16:10because once he throws in,
00:16:11you've got to have your hands up.
00:16:12Hard left hook up top by De La Hoya.
00:16:13That's the bounce.
00:16:14Chavez tried to retaliate.
00:16:15There came the bounce.
00:16:16You're right.
00:16:17Yeah, that means he's seen something.
00:16:19Once he sees something,
00:16:20you jump away.
00:16:21retaliate, and there came the bounce. You're right.
00:16:23Yeah, that means he's seen something.
00:16:25Once he sees something, you jump away.
00:16:32That's a hard thing for a puncher to do,
00:16:34is to step back, move out of the way,
00:16:36and that's nothing wrong with it.
00:16:38Just like holding the horn of a
00:16:39Western saddle. There's nothing wrong.
00:16:42No cutting round one this time.
00:16:44As we go to Julio Cesar Chavez's corner,
00:16:46where they speak Spanish,
00:16:48our interpreter there will be Ray Torres.
00:16:51In De La Hoya's corner,
00:16:53Oscar is at first reluctant
00:16:55to sit down on the stool.
00:16:57And he won't.
00:17:01Keep frustrating.
00:17:06You got legs. Use your legs a little bit.
00:17:18You got to have your hands in position.
00:17:21And make sure that you move your head.
00:17:26Take it easy.
00:17:27Be tranquil and get some air.
00:17:29It was the jab that busted up Chavez
00:17:37in the first minute of the first fight.
00:17:40He's being asked to throw more jabs now.
00:17:43The length of this fight could be determined
00:17:45by whether or not Chavez cuts again.
00:17:50And as advisor Gil Clancy asks De La Hoya to throw the jab,
00:17:54Oscar steps out into round two
00:17:55and begins to try to establish it
00:17:57with three quick jabs.
00:18:02Now we start to see Chavez coming forward,
00:18:05the trademark style that has carried him
00:18:07to 100 official victories over the years.
00:18:10If there's ever a time not to move forward for Chavez,
00:18:15it's the first six rounds of this boxing match.
00:18:18You don't want any moving forward yet.
00:18:20Don't try to mix it up, but this boy can hit.
00:18:22And as Chavez goes in,
00:18:25De La Hoya starts to land left hooks.
00:18:27Two sizzling left hooks in that exchange.
00:18:33Now...
00:18:34Right hand, and it's for Chavez.
00:18:43The Chavez element of the crowd
00:18:45loving it when their man connects.
00:18:47There's a little blood coming from somewhere.
00:18:52Like I said, left eye already again.
00:18:55Of Julio.
00:18:56Julio Chavez is cut already.
00:18:57Well, you've got to bet on Julio to bleed
00:18:59given his record in recent fights.
00:19:02In four of the last eight fights for Chavez,
00:19:05he has been bloodied
00:19:06by the time the final bell sounded.
00:19:08He had a plastic surgeon
00:19:09to take all of the scar tissue out,
00:19:11but sometimes, you know,
00:19:13you don't have much in there
00:19:13once you take that out to protect the blows.
00:19:15Yeah, it doesn't look like a cut.
00:19:18It looks like an abrasion,
00:19:20but blood is starting to form
00:19:21on his left eyebrow again.
00:19:24Yeah, but he doesn't want to be caught
00:19:25by Oscar's jab.
00:19:26Now, you want to sit back,
00:19:28do the same thing you did in the first round.
00:19:30Don't allow this guy to start connecting
00:19:31with that left jab,
00:19:32because if you do,
00:19:33he's going to get you with 20 more.
00:19:36Yeah, hell of a bad fight
00:19:37if he doesn't do something short.
00:19:40Yeah, but it's about winning now.
00:19:42It's not about proving anything.
00:19:43Just go out there and win.
00:19:45They exchange punches.
00:19:49De Laoya landed a thunderous right hand.
00:19:52Chavez takes it.
00:19:53Keeps coming forward.
00:19:55But he's getting into a firefight with Chavez.
00:19:59I don't know that that's what he really wants to do.
00:20:02Oh, yeah, he doesn't mind.
00:20:03This boy's got the power, let me tell you.
00:20:06And he's got eyes.
00:20:07He sees exactly what he's doing.
00:20:09He didn't want to let Chavez get any confidence
00:20:11this early in the fight.
00:20:12That's what you don't want.
00:20:13The old guy starts to feel at home,
00:20:15and you're going to feel like
00:20:16you're going to have a horrible night.
00:20:19Chavez insisted to us
00:20:20that De Laoya isn't a particularly hard puncher.
00:20:23Certainly not as hard a puncher
00:20:25as Edwin Rosario or Roger Mayweather
00:20:27or some of the other guys
00:20:28that he, Chavez, has been in with.
00:20:30De Laoya would love to prove
00:20:32that observation wrong.
00:20:34De Laoya has got to start
00:20:35working on his left chair up now.
00:20:37This is not the kind of fight
00:20:38you want with an experienced fighter.
00:20:40Keep them out, both of you.
00:20:45And De Laoya staring daggers at Chavez
00:20:49as Richard Steele separates them
00:20:52to end the second.
00:20:53Let's go to work.
00:21:00You're all right.
00:21:05You've got to do your work
00:21:06nice and easy.
00:21:12How do you feel?
00:21:17I'm okay.
00:21:18When you get near him,
00:21:21move side to side,
00:21:23move your weights and get in.
00:21:26You've got to watch out
00:21:27because he's going to...
00:21:28Except...
00:21:29So they worked on Chavez
00:21:47with his left eye
00:21:48between rounds.
00:21:50You saw the pressure
00:21:50above the eyebrow.
00:21:52Now Oscar's starting
00:21:53to operate with his left jab.
00:21:54He turns on the left jab.
00:21:56There's no contest.
00:21:58He only threw nine jabs
00:21:59in round two.
00:22:00I'm sure Gil Clancy
00:22:01would like to see 30.
00:22:04De Laoya countering
00:22:05as Chavez comes in.
00:22:07And a low blow back.
00:22:08Time, time.
00:22:10Go to corner, go to corner.
00:22:12Just a warning.
00:22:13Keep them up, okay?
00:22:14One.
00:22:15You heard Richard Steele
00:22:17give a warning to Chavez.
00:22:19I'm not sure getting angry
00:22:21is good for Oscar.
00:22:22Oh, no.
00:22:23Oscar should be listening
00:22:24to his corner
00:22:24most importantly right now.
00:22:28Now, Chavez,
00:22:29this has turned into
00:22:30what he wanted to turn into.
00:22:31He gets that 12 inches
00:22:33and he starts doing
00:22:33a lot of things.
00:22:35He's out way away
00:22:36when he's not doing anything.
00:22:38When he's effective,
00:22:39he gets close.
00:22:40You get close
00:22:41or you stay far away.
00:22:42Chavez might gladly
00:22:43give up a penalty point
00:22:44to get Oscar
00:22:46to abandon his game plan
00:22:47and war with him.
00:22:48Yeah, but Oscar,
00:22:49once he gets that left jab going,
00:22:51he's got it.
00:22:52Chavez getting his jab going
00:23:05and starting the exchanges
00:23:07with his jab.
00:23:10De La Hoya landing counters
00:23:11but not really commanding
00:23:13for long range yet.
00:23:15Chavez.
00:23:15Yeah, Chavez much sharper,
00:23:17much better in this fight
00:23:18than he was the first time around.
00:23:20Oscar is going to have
00:23:22to fight tonight
00:23:23and that's nothing wrong
00:23:24with that.
00:23:24There's nothing wrong
00:23:25with fighting.
00:23:26J-Up and dig in.
00:23:27You can make this guy
00:23:28back up too.
00:23:32Once he was
00:23:32relentlessly aggressive,
00:23:34Chavez, he's showing
00:23:35that as he gets older,
00:23:37he had other virtues
00:23:38as a fighter
00:23:39that he knows how to fight.
00:23:42Posing as a guerrilla sniper
00:23:44here and with surprising
00:23:46effectiveness,
00:23:47particularly here
00:23:47in the third round.
00:23:49Abdel, Abdel,
00:23:49De La Hoya goes to the body
00:23:50with that left hand now.
00:23:52That will change everything.
00:23:55And De La Hoya's
00:23:55oft-overlooked right hand
00:23:57landing there
00:23:58on a solid right cross.
00:24:00You know this
00:24:01about the experienced fighter.
00:24:02You get hit hurt,
00:24:03you get hurt,
00:24:03you don't try to pay back.
00:24:05You just stop the fight.
00:24:08Oscar missing
00:24:09with the left hook upstairs.
00:24:10Still not establishing
00:24:11the jab.
00:24:12I think the greatest mistake,
00:24:15Oscar's got to understand
00:24:16that without his jab,
00:24:18he's just as ordinary
00:24:19as Chavez tonight.
00:24:20He's got to distinguish himself
00:24:22with his left jab.
00:24:24Left hook to the body
00:24:25by De La Hoya.
00:24:26Chavez bowls in
00:24:27and lands a right
00:24:28to the ribcage.
00:24:29Right cross again
00:24:45seems to be open
00:24:47for De La Hoya.
00:24:48Lead right hand
00:24:49and a left hook by Chavez.
00:24:51Hard left hook by Chavez
00:24:52to punctuate
00:24:53the best round he's fought
00:24:55against Oscar De La Hoya
00:24:57in two fights.
00:25:04There you see the flurry
00:25:05by De La Hoya
00:25:07and as Chavez comes in
00:25:08throwing that very low blow
00:25:11down around
00:25:13Tierra del Fuego.
00:25:15Right there.
00:25:18And here was the De La Hoya
00:25:19reaction.
00:25:27Alright, you get to literally
00:25:28there's nothing happening.
00:25:30Everything's alright.
00:25:33Very, very calm.
00:25:44You first with the jab
00:25:47in round three
00:25:48Oscar De La Hoya
00:25:50landed 26 of 51 punches.
00:25:52William Cesar Chavez
00:25:53only 230
00:25:54but he landed 17
00:25:55and a couple of them
00:25:56were highly effective
00:25:57left hooks
00:25:58including the one
00:25:59that finished the round.
00:26:01When it's thrown
00:26:02Oscar off a lot
00:26:03Chavez has not been aggressive.
00:26:06He stays his distance.
00:26:07Just recreated
00:26:08a whole nother fight,
00:26:09a whole nother training camp.
00:26:10He walks forward,
00:26:15gets a little distance
00:26:16and backs off.
00:26:23How stunning it would be
00:26:24to De La Hoya
00:26:25and his supporters
00:26:27if this became
00:26:28a tactical boxing match.
00:26:30Without a left jab,
00:26:32Oscar De La Hoya,
00:26:32you believe me,
00:26:33he'll be swimming
00:26:34and swimming in deep water.
00:26:36Good jab to the body
00:26:43by De La Hoya.
00:26:44Another good left jab.
00:26:45Now he's picking it up.
00:26:48And a little faking.
00:26:50You feint it,
00:26:51you do it.
00:26:51So he brings the left jab
00:26:53to the body twice
00:26:54and then comes back upstairs.
00:26:56Chavez extends the right hand
00:26:57and De La Hoya lands
00:26:58a left hook over it.
00:26:59De La Hoya lands
00:27:00a straight right.
00:27:01Chavez suddenly
00:27:02stops throwing punches.
00:27:04Chavez landed a good shot
00:27:06so he started to kind of
00:27:07assess what he's done.
00:27:08He's done.
00:27:10Oscar's gonna hit him back.
00:27:11He's young.
00:27:12You hit the young guys,
00:27:13they're gonna hit you back.
00:27:14Whether they can see you or not.
00:27:16Chavez!
00:27:19Chavez!
00:27:19Chavez!
00:27:20Chavez!
00:27:21Chavez!
00:27:22Chavez!
00:27:23Crowd chanting,
00:27:24Chavez, Chavez.
00:27:25De La Hoya landing
00:27:26another right cross
00:27:27and the left hook upstairs.
00:27:31This round has been
00:27:32a mystery for Chavez.
00:27:33He's only landed one or two
00:27:35and De La Hoya
00:27:35is countering effectively.
00:27:37But still,
00:27:38Oscar not establishing
00:27:39the left jab
00:27:40in the way you might have expected.
00:27:42Now it's gone.
00:27:43Now we got the left jab.
00:27:44Now it's multiplying.
00:27:46And you see the bounce
00:27:47and the feet.
00:27:48You don't want him
00:27:49to get that about
00:27:49Chavez.
00:27:51You get a little closer
00:27:51and make him stop bouncing.
00:27:53His confidence comes
00:27:54when he's bouncing.
00:28:00You notice Chavez
00:28:01once De La Hoya
00:28:03starts to bounce
00:28:03he backs away.
00:28:05You can only do that
00:28:06with 34, 30 years.
00:28:0734, 35 years.
00:28:09You just don't challenge
00:28:10those guys.
00:28:10This round
00:28:21a scoring round
00:28:23for De La Hoya
00:28:23who has piled up
00:28:25the punch count
00:28:25on Chavez.
00:28:26Chavez not busy here.
00:28:28There's a good left hook
00:28:29inside
00:28:29by Julio.
00:28:32Julio starts to pick up
00:28:33his confidence
00:28:34and that's when
00:28:35Oscar's more dangerous
00:28:36when you get confident.
00:28:38And De La Hoya
00:28:38meeting Chavez
00:28:39with an uppercut
00:28:40as Julio stepped inside
00:28:41to try to score
00:28:42with the left again.
00:28:45Now Julio is landing
00:28:46left jabs now.
00:28:47You don't want that
00:28:48to start happening.
00:28:51Julio's been surprisingly
00:28:52affected with his jab
00:28:53with the first four.
00:28:59Relaxado.
00:29:00Ponle más rimas.
00:29:00Más de lado a lado
00:29:01and use some más jabs.
00:29:04Sit down.
00:29:05Oscar.
00:29:06Come here, Oscar.
00:29:10First time De La Hoya
00:29:11has sat down
00:29:12in his corner.
00:29:14Oscar, I want you
00:29:15to move a little bit
00:29:16more side to side
00:29:16and use more the jab.
00:29:18You got the key now, Oscar.
00:29:19You got the key
00:29:20like this round.
00:29:20This round.
00:29:21Use this round
00:29:21as an example, okay?
00:29:22Last round.
00:29:24It was very good next round.
00:29:27Everything is under control.
00:29:28Andres is controlled.
00:29:29He's...
00:29:30He's...
00:29:31He is...
00:29:32Okay, you got to see
00:29:34what you want.
00:29:39Here you'll see
00:29:41some back at you.
00:29:43Chavez lands.
00:29:44De La Hoya responds.
00:29:48Watch Chavez
00:29:48as he sit on the ring
00:29:49from the edge of that ring.
00:29:50He's ready to jump up.
00:29:52You know,
00:29:53it figures
00:29:54in a fight like this
00:29:55that Chavez
00:29:57gets two years older,
00:29:59De La Hoya
00:29:59two years better.
00:30:01But Chavez,
00:30:02while being two years older,
00:30:04is also
00:30:04better,
00:30:06certainly,
00:30:07than he was
00:30:07in their first fight.
00:30:09Harold,
00:30:09how'd you score
00:30:09through the first four?
00:30:10Well, Jim,
00:30:11I've got a 3-1,
00:30:1239-37,
00:30:13Oscar De La Hoya.
00:30:14I get this hit to rent
00:30:15to Julio Cesar Chavez
00:30:16when he made Oscar
00:30:17know he was in a fight.
00:30:18But I'll tell you something,
00:30:19Oscar's getting me nervous
00:30:20by keeping those hands down
00:30:22at his waist.
00:30:22I don't know why he's doing that.
00:30:24He's leaving his jaw exposed.
00:30:25But be as it may,
00:30:26I still think Oscar's
00:30:27living in the dream,
00:30:28the harder punches,
00:30:28and certainly he's
00:30:29the busier fighter.
00:30:30He also has a little cut
00:30:32on the left side of his face.
00:30:33Yeah, he's got a little nick.
00:30:34Little nick by Oscar's left eye.
00:30:36I have the same score
00:30:39as Harold.
00:30:42Now this fight
00:30:42has turned into
00:30:43what Chavez wanted to do.
00:30:45You know, you bounce,
00:30:46you come a little closer
00:30:47to me every now and then,
00:30:48I'll pay you back.
00:30:50He's using his left jab
00:30:51more effectively now
00:30:52than Oscar's left jab.
00:30:55You don't want that.
00:30:56Oscar's doing right now.
00:30:57Bounce and jab.
00:30:59This is, to my eyes,
00:31:00the most effective
00:31:01Julio Cesar Chavez
00:31:02we've seen in quite a while.
00:31:03And even at that,
00:31:04by CompuBox numbers,
00:31:06he's been doubled
00:31:07in punch output
00:31:08and in landed punches.
00:31:11Oscar keeps his hands low
00:31:13because Chavez is shorter
00:31:16and he gets a little lower.
00:31:17Sometimes if your hand's up high,
00:31:18you just can't get any shots.
00:31:21It's like a gun slinger.
00:31:22You keep it to your waist
00:31:23to draw quick.
00:31:25You think it also suggests
00:31:26that Oscar doesn't think
00:31:27Chavez can hurt him?
00:31:28No, he wants to hit.
00:31:30He wants to land a shot
00:31:31and it can't be done
00:31:32when his hand's up high.
00:31:33Chavez reaches right in
00:31:36and stops everything.
00:31:37Good left hook
00:31:38by Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:31:39He tries to follow up,
00:31:41stepping up onto the ropes.
00:31:42Delaware goes away
00:31:43and lands a combination
00:31:44to the belly.
00:31:45And those body shots
00:31:46are going to be
00:31:47the winning edge for Oscar.
00:31:49He's going to have to
00:31:49put a lot in now.
00:31:50Go to the body
00:31:51and make this guy
00:31:52extend this,
00:31:53stay in the ring.
00:31:54But take his power
00:31:56away from him.
00:31:59West jab jolted.
00:32:01Good left jab.
00:32:04De La Hoya's face
00:32:05registering maximum intensity.
00:32:11Hard right hand
00:32:12over the top by Oscar.
00:32:14Now he's boxing.
00:32:16Bouncing from side to side,
00:32:18creating angles.
00:32:19This is short.
00:32:20Landing as he has
00:32:21throughout the bouton.
00:32:22Now he must not
00:32:24pay any attention
00:32:24to the referee
00:32:25saying watch your shoulder.
00:32:26You do everything you can.
00:32:28Two good body shots
00:32:29by Julio.
00:32:30Hearkening back
00:32:31to the Chavez of old.
00:32:34Keep him up, keep him up.
00:32:35Chavez continues
00:32:36to go to the ribcage.
00:32:38De La Hoya just misses
00:32:39with a potentially
00:32:40lethal uppercut.
00:32:41And I told you
00:32:42it has a 12-inch difference
00:32:43where Oscar's got no power.
00:32:45You've got to stay
00:32:45within that 12-inch.
00:32:48De La Hoya
00:32:49going body and upstairs.
00:32:51Chavez coming right back.
00:32:53Whoa!
00:32:57Richard Steele
00:32:58with two angry warriors
00:33:00on his hands tonight.
00:33:03I told you Slim
00:33:04was gaining weight tonight.
00:33:07Slim gained weight
00:33:08in the first five rounds.
00:33:09Stay with the punches
00:33:10inside.
00:33:11Don't go that wide.
00:33:12You have to use more
00:33:13of your legs.
00:33:13You have to use more.
00:33:15The jobs, all right?
00:33:17Are you listening?
00:33:18You have to prepare
00:33:19the right hand.
00:33:20You have to paint him.
00:33:21Julio, we're doing okay.
00:33:22We're doing okay.
00:33:23You're doing okay.
00:33:24You're doing real fine.
00:33:28Nothing happening.
00:33:30He's got nothing.
00:33:32He's got nothing.
00:33:48Don't lose your calm.
00:33:50Don't lose your cool.
00:33:51Don't lose your cool.
00:33:55Don't lose your cool.
00:33:56Between rounds here.
00:33:59De La Hoya Cutman
00:34:00Chuck Bodak
00:34:01with some rare work.
00:34:02Oscar's never been
00:34:03seriously cut in a fight.
00:34:05Bodak was working
00:34:06on the left side
00:34:07or the outside,
00:34:08I should say,
00:34:08of the left eye.
00:34:10Oscar's blowing
00:34:11his nose a lot
00:34:12these days.
00:34:12that won't help that little cut on the side
00:34:14and make him swell.
00:34:17Well, and unlike a fighter like Chávez,
00:34:19De La Hoya is not accustomed
00:34:20to the sight of his own blood.
00:34:21So if it starts to flow,
00:34:23it'll be an interesting test for him.
00:34:26Chávez threw 48 punches in round five.
00:34:28That's the most he's ever thrown
00:34:30in any of 12 rounds, or 9 rounds
00:34:32he's fought against Oscar De La Hoya.
00:34:35Oscar hasn't been beaten at the jab
00:34:37in a long time, and Chávez is doing that.
00:34:40Oscar's got to keep his jab up
00:34:42because he has the better in the reach.
00:34:44Use that reach.
00:34:45Don't get close to this man.
00:34:47Well, the hands held low,
00:34:49as Harold Letterman pointed out,
00:34:51and you emphasize, George,
00:34:52why Oscar's doing it,
00:34:53but the hands held low
00:34:54give Chávez a chance to land his jab.
00:34:57And once he gets closer,
00:34:58De La Hoya's got to move away.
00:35:00Bounce. Use your...
00:35:02You see, he pushes him
00:35:03because he doesn't want him that close.
00:35:05Back away.
00:35:07This is everything that Chávez wanted right now.
00:35:12Remember when Sugar Ray Leonard
00:35:15got lured into playing Roberto Duran's macho game?
00:35:19This is one of those nights.
00:35:21You've got to win a fight sometimes.
00:35:23This guy is all hyped up.
00:35:24You just can't outpunch him.
00:35:26You're going to have to box him
00:35:26and win on points.
00:35:29There's a little bit of Sugar Ray
00:35:30against Duran
00:35:31in De La Hoya against Chávez tonight.
00:35:33And remember, you close in at 12 inches
00:35:39and De La Hoya's got no power at all.
00:35:43Chávez is doing an excellent job
00:35:44of staying close.
00:35:45Great step-back step.
00:35:46Watch his shoulder.
00:35:53He's only an ordinary fighter
00:35:54when he's hit close to Chávez.
00:35:56Chávez following the George Foreman blueprint
00:36:00to perfection right now.
00:36:02You heard George tell you
00:36:03before the fight
00:36:04that Chávez must step up
00:36:05into De La Hoya's chest.
00:36:07Not only is De La Hoya
00:36:08hands starting to drop,
00:36:10his shoulders are starting to drop.
00:36:12A lot of conditioning
00:36:13is going out of the window now.
00:36:16But things are changing.
00:36:17That's when you want good legs.
00:36:19Good body shot by De La Hoya.
00:36:20Good left hook up top by Chávez.
00:36:24De La Hoya willing to trade
00:36:25at close range.
00:36:27Is it the right strategy?
00:36:29He's got no choice.
00:36:32It's a good left uppercut by De La Hoya.
00:36:35Chávez seemingly unhurt
00:36:36by the vicious uppercut
00:36:38that snapped his head back.
00:36:39But he was hurt by the left hook
00:36:41to the body by De La Hoya.
00:36:42Ooh, another left hook by Chávez.
00:36:45Hard left hook by De La Hoya.
00:36:47Right on the point of the chin.
00:36:50Oscar trying to explode Chávez
00:36:54as they reach the midpoint point
00:36:57of the back.
00:37:04Close your eyes.
00:37:07Just the rims under me, okay?
00:37:11Close your eyes.
00:37:12Respira, descansa.
00:37:13Close your eyes.
00:37:14Don't stay too long inside, Oscar.
00:37:17You have to use it.
00:37:17One round.
00:37:18Give yourself a breather.
00:37:19Boxer round, okay?
00:37:21Boxer round.
00:37:22You don't have to go out
00:37:23and knock him out.
00:37:24Boxer round.
00:37:25Look, my friend.
00:37:26Look, Chávez at the distance.
00:37:27Have confidence.
00:37:28Up in the rhythm, please.
00:37:29Up in the rhythm.
00:37:30Okay.
00:37:31Keep...
00:37:31Deep breath.
00:37:33Go up and down.
00:37:34And you need to shorten up the distance.
00:37:36Here's Chávez now pressing the attack, but here's the uppercut from De La Hoya landing flush.
00:37:48Story of this fight so far, Chávez has not been cut, and he has taken De La Hoya's best shots
00:37:59and keeps coming.
00:38:01Gil Clancy told De La Hoya, now box.
00:38:04You don't have to go for the knockout now.
00:38:05Box a little bit.
00:38:06Let's hope he takes that advice.
00:38:12De La Hoya starting to pump the jab.
00:38:15This is what makes him great when he does it.
00:38:18And then as an experienced fighter, Chávez, get on the outside, concede all of that, just
00:38:23don't start a fight.
00:38:26It's like the home run hitter who goes for home runs and goes into a slump.
00:38:30Gil Clancy knew deep in his heart he would increase De La Hoya's chances of scoring a
00:38:35knockout if he could convince his man not to go for a knockout.
00:38:39And Chávez is real smart.
00:38:41He turns his body left, turns his body right.
00:38:43That means De La Hoya's got to stand there and watch him until he straightens up again.
00:38:48Oscar just popping Chávez with the jab as Julio comes in.
00:38:52That's a strategy he has not been using in the earlier rounds.
00:38:57De La Hoya now is avoiding that close contact now.
00:39:00He backs away, which is what he should have been doing all night.
00:39:03Chávez landing a jab and a right hand over the top.
00:39:06Doubling up on his hooks.
00:39:13Now, he's allowed De La Hoya to find that range in there.
00:39:15That's what you don't want to do.
00:39:18Stay away from him.
00:39:19Make him guess by not being in that range.
00:39:22If Oscar's in contention or in condition to keep throwing the jab, he commands Chávez from
00:39:28long range.
00:39:28He was smart.
00:39:33He did his combinations and he backed away.
00:39:35That's what you want to do.
00:39:36Make this guy earn everything he gets.
00:39:39Chávez coming forward.
00:39:41Tracking his man around the ring.
00:39:43Looking very, very Chávez.
00:39:45Even as he fails, it seems, to win rounds because of the number of punches De La Hoya lands.
00:39:51Well, De La Hoya was smart.
00:39:52In the last round, he was able to get to that body.
00:39:54Hard right hand by Chávez.
00:39:57Chávez is still hurting from that early body punch in the last round.
00:40:00Ooh, a left hook.
00:40:05Good left hook inside by Julio.
00:40:07A little cut over the right eye of Chávez now.
00:40:13Just a little trickle of blood above the right eyebrow.
00:40:16At his best, nobody ever took a shot better than Chávez.
00:40:20And he's showing some of that iron jaw and true grit.
00:40:26A lot of that now, he's trying to avoid being cut these days.
00:40:30So that's why he's not really standing toe-to-toe.
00:40:34Now he's making the mistake of following a puncher around again.
00:40:39You don't want to follow a puncher.
00:40:40Why?
00:40:41Oh, sir.
00:40:41Because the puncher's got something in that bag.
00:40:44You back away from a puncher.
00:40:46You don't follow him around.
00:40:47This has been a big round for De La Hoya.
00:40:49Chávez has been a target.
00:40:52And for the first time in the fight, a relatively easy target.
00:40:56Man !
00:40:56Man !
00:40:57Don't try to hit him.
00:41:15Don't ever extend yourself to hit him with the right hand.
00:41:18You gotta use more intelligence
00:41:21Okay, you need to
00:41:28He's a little swollen there
00:41:38In and out by this round beautiful, okay?
00:41:41Once again, we see Delahoya landing his left hand right there
00:41:45He's Chavez coming back with the right hand
00:41:57Round eight of a scheduled 12. Delahoya said before the fight
00:42:01He hoped it would go seven or eight rounds so that he could punish Chavez for the impudence
00:42:05He displayed after the last fight harold letterman. How do you have it through seven? Jim 69 64 six rounds to one
00:42:12Oscar Delahoya Jim, it's effective aggressive this that counts Julio Cesar Chavez sometimes is the aggressive, but he doesn't score
00:42:20Oscar's just not punching him like he's doing right now
00:42:23Serious business
00:42:25Delahoya to the body with vicious shots in the first half minute of this round
00:42:30No doubt about it. He's got that confidence level up now and Chavez is making an awful mistake of following him around
00:42:36He's just like a punching bag at this point
00:42:39You always concede to the puncher. I'm not gonna follow you so you can get sent
00:42:46I have the same score as Harold
00:42:48The issue now seems to be at this point in the fight
00:42:52Whether Chavez can make it through 12 rounds and claim some kind of victory because delahoya
00:42:59Insisted that he would get a knockout
00:43:00Well one thing's for sure
00:43:06It's a more committed and more spirited effort from Chavez than his severest critics would have expected
00:43:11Yeah
00:43:12The rematch has to be the mismatch everybody presumed it might be
00:43:19Chavez is masked beginning to show the effects of delahoya punishment
00:43:24Oscar concentrating on the body here in round eight
00:43:27Almost as though he's consciously trying to set julio up for something big upstairs
00:43:34Oscar's very smart he gets in but he stands up and get that height advantage whenever things get too rough
00:43:39So did uh chavez misses
00:43:42Oscar landing left hooks and uppercuts
00:43:45Another one there as julio came in a little swelling under the left eye of delahoya
00:43:50We told you about the nick at the corner of the eye before
00:43:53So both fighters showing some effects
00:43:55Now this should not have happened with oscar he should not have gotten into this kind of fight
00:44:02His corner is going to have to ring him in now
00:44:05Blood now pouring from the lip or mouth of chavez
00:44:11But third he comes
00:44:12He steps over to Oscar's left and he steps over to his right whenever there's danger
00:44:18And he's hitting below the belt occasionally too
00:44:24Hitting below the belt three or four times there
00:44:27Richard Steele doing nothing
00:44:28Delahoya willing to trade shot for shot with Julio Cesar Chavez
00:44:33A lot of swelling under delahoya's left eye
00:44:35Looks like it might swell shot as the fight goes on
00:44:39Remember chavez has been beaten like this round after round before in his life
00:44:43But delahoya this is new territory
00:44:47Delahoya so conscious of offense with his left hand that he's some times susceptible on that side of it
00:44:54That's the meanest looking Oscar delahoya you've ever seen
00:45:01It's a small truck
00:45:21I'm going to stop the bleeding
00:45:23Let's go inside the mouth
00:45:28Needs on the inside the mouth so you can rinse
00:45:39It puts some water in the vent
00:45:41there you see that flurry at the end of the round
00:45:52chavez looking a little weary it must be a fight chavez it won't come out
00:46:00he has refused to come out the inside of his mouth bloody and i am shocked shocked
00:46:09that a warrior like chavez once again when he tastes his own blood sits on his stool
00:46:17won't come out and fight
00:46:20Julio Cesar Chavez slaughtered us yesterday he said if he beats me this time i will give
00:46:27him the respect he deserves let's see if he will we don't know if the doctor has said
00:46:33anything though well the doctor came in george and told the referee the fight could go on
00:46:38but apparently that was a no must from chavez
00:46:46he did his best and when this guy kept having some stinging to his power for a 36 year old
00:46:53guy who used to be a lightweight he gave everything he had thank you but still you expect him to
00:47:00go on i think it was larry right up until the moment right up until the moment it ended it was the best
00:47:07chavez effort of the last several years must have been a fight i've got blood splattered all over my
00:47:13scorecard i mean time being the white choir we told me once in a boxing match with me he said you know
00:47:21i saw death sometimes you can see a lot of things in that ring i mean the doctor won't stop it you
00:47:28got to come in and say look i gotta have mercy on myself and let's face it george what does julio
00:47:33cesar chavez have left to prove at this point he did best he could believe me the best but oscar kept
00:47:39giving more than his best well it sets up a hell of a match on november 21 oscar de la hoya is going to
00:47:46take on ike corte his toughest opponent yet
00:47:50oscar could have made that one of the toughest fights in his career because he just wanted to show
00:47:59off it needed to have been like that third loss of chavez's career second time he's been stopped in a
00:48:08fight with oscar de la hoya okay now that was the end of the preceding round here's what happened on
00:48:13chavez's stool a lot of that is breathing there try to get your tongue out and in to suck up
00:48:23yeah you can see the blood coming out of his mouth i think maybe his tongue was cut
00:48:27yeah a lot of things can happen to you in those kind of combinations being thrown
00:48:33final punch stat numbers oscar de la hoya's accuracy increased as the fight went on but he got hit
00:48:39and hit more often than most anybody would have expected in one round
00:48:43chavez actually threw 90 punches against de la hoya and i'm not sure anybody has ever accomplished that
00:48:48against oscar before jabs in the bout de la hoya cranked it up in the middle rounds and wound up
00:48:54landing 76 of 169 once he got the jab in gear it was clear that chavez had no easy chance of getting
00:49:02back into the fight and now let's go to michael buffer for the official particulars
00:49:06the challenger's corner advised referee richard steel that he was unable to continue
00:49:15the end comes at the end of round number eight the winner by knockout victory and still
00:49:22the defending and reigning undefeated wbc welterweight champion of the world
00:49:33the golden boy
00:49:46through the eight rounds they completed de la hoya led on two
00:50:00scorecards by a three-point margin 78 75 and on the third scorecard by a six-point margin 79 73 so he
00:50:09was effectively in control of the bout at the moment at which it was stopped
00:50:23it was a full house and they got their money's worth you know oscar was saved this time by his corner
00:50:30when clancy told him to move and box don't look for a knockout he's changed the whole story good
00:50:35advice from gil clancy and why not the man's a legend let's go to larry merchant in the ring with
00:50:40de la hoya thank you jim congratulations oscar is this the fight you wanted to fight in this rematch
00:50:49oh not at all i i did total opposite of what we worked on but um i felt stronger than him
00:50:57in terms of the result the results hey he quit that's all i want you may expected me after the
00:51:03fight what did he say to you he told me you know what you beat me is it a satisfaction and a
00:51:10surprise to you that you made the great warrior quit on his stool um well hey um a lot of people
00:51:17didn't believe me and whoever didn't believe me hey that's their fault not mine i'm gonna keep on
00:51:21going and trying to become the best fight in the world and i did i did a lot of mistakes today that
00:51:25i knew i picked up on we'll go back to the gym and work on them is that because this was such an
00:51:30emotional night for you well because it was all i was too tense i was uh the hype the the media
00:51:36everything i was too tense and too uh i wasn't relaxed and i wasn't doing my game but i i picked
00:51:41up on that and i'm gonna work on work on that in the gym were you surprised abe that he didn't cut
00:51:48up when you hit him so many times in the face i was uh not surprised at all because um i didn't stick
00:51:54that solid jab that i had the first time around so um when he didn't cut as soon as i was expecting it
00:52:00to um it it uh no it didn't surprise me at all did he give you more than you could have anticipated
00:52:07from him no he's a tough warrior i mean any guy against him will will do uh will do even worse
00:52:13because he's such a warrior he was in the best shape of his life i guarantee that looking ahead
00:52:19everybody wants to see you fight the top young challenges out there ike corte is first your thoughts
00:52:26now about that oh i just can't wait i corte is a respectable fighter he's uh one of the best out
00:52:31there and you're gonna see uh if you thought you saw a war tonight you're gonna see a real one on
00:52:35november thank you very much jacob my son i love you he's seven months today so wow this is for you
00:52:43as we speak oscar de la hoya is already in training for that november 21 bout with ike corte
00:52:49and about a half hour after the fight in company with our spanish interpreter ray tares
00:52:53our larry merchant caught up to julio cesar chavez in his dressing room julio you seem to be able to
00:53:02lure de la hoya into your kind of fight why was he able to do so well in your kind of fight
00:53:11uh he didn't answer the question but he says that in the corner didn't let him come up because he was
00:53:19had a big cut but he believes he gave a great fight you did give a very big effort and you and you
00:53:38didn't cut what did you find out about delahoya as a fighter in this fight
00:54:18i i learned that the lawyer is a great fighter in all my respect to him i take my head off to him
00:54:23but i showed him that i am not finished there's still a lot of chavis left
00:54:28very good were you were you you said after the first fight that he never was able to hurt you
00:54:37was he a good is he a good puncher or not they did to pay the part of the primera
00:54:41pelea que él nunca te golpeó nunca te hirió eh él es buen esto eh pega duro eh pega regular no tiene una
00:54:52pegada contundente porque no me tomó ustedes se dieron cuenta eh si pega regular pega fuerte pero no
00:55:00tiene una pegada para no quedarme he's a heart puncher but not not not a real knockout artist as
00:55:05you can see he never knocked me out we can he deserves my respect we can remember when you made
00:55:13outstanding fighter like mayweather quit the fight it seemed to us that in this fight
00:55:22de la joya made you quit in the corner are you disappointed in that
00:55:27or did your or did your handlers not allow you to come out
00:56:15what was he saying he says that he did not quit he's a he's a man he's a he's a whole heart like
00:56:22we always known that what what a brave and type of person he is and he didn't quit the corner stopped
00:56:26the fight because of the cut will he continue to fight el continuo de tu peleando claro que sí yo
00:56:32quiero seguir peleando el médico mío no me dejó salir no me dejó salir de pelear his doctor did not let
00:56:38him continue the fight thank you very much the cuts inside the lips are very very harmful thank
00:56:47you very much back now to tonight october 3 at the las vegas hilton where i'm joined on camera
00:56:54by our spanish interpreter ray torres and before we begin this conversation i should tell you that
00:56:58ray's not only a master of both spanish and english but also a former fighter himself ray you've had the
00:57:03benefit now of looking back at videotape both of the sequence that ended the fight in chavis's corner
00:57:09and then also the interview that you and larry conducted with chavis first the end of the fight
00:57:14what more can you tell us now about the decision in julio's corner to stop the proceedings i believe
00:57:20that the whole decision was based on him he decided he didn't want to continue he fought gallantly and
00:57:26like an old champion brave man that he is and but he figured he was defeated sort of like what
00:57:33happened tonight uh and the the old champion just got beaten when he was asked if he wanted to
00:57:39continue fighting did he refer to the blood coming out of his mouth no uh he uh was asked and there
00:57:45was a question from the corner that did he want to stop fighting and then he answered my ribs are hurting
00:57:52my ribs hurt and he didn't say anything about the blood coming out of his mouth and then later on after
00:57:57the fight we never heard anything about the ribs the ribs were healed instantaneously and no there was
00:58:03nothing said about about the ribs then they blamed it on the cut lip because that's more obvious but
00:58:08no question in your mind that julio quit his corner didn't do it for absolutely and then in the interview
00:58:13that you and larry conducted with him what was it that made him so angry the fact that uh we asked him
00:58:19had he quit and that it really hurt him because the macho man that he is and and a good thing to point
00:58:25out was that we also asked him that he made roger mayweather quit and he kind of agreed yes uh but
00:58:33when we asked him that he quit he got annoyed using the same spanish word absolutely rajarse is my
00:58:39translations for quit it might not be perfect spanish but everybody understands that he understood then
00:58:44which only shows the two defeats at the hands of oscar de la hoya isn't going to change julio cesar chavez
00:58:49thank you very much ray george foreman as we look ahead to de la hoya against the powerful ike corte
00:58:55on november 21 what did you see in this fight against chavez which tells us something about
00:58:59how oscar might perform in november yeah oscar de la hoya we found out without that excellent
00:59:04less left jab that he possessed he turns into an ordinary fighter a slug fist i mean he gets count with
00:59:10two he returns three he's powerful but he had he's gonna have to use that left jab without it he's an
00:59:16ordinary fighter but i do believe he's able to go back to the board keep the left hand out there
00:59:21and because of the speed of his hand he can pull it out interesting tactical challenge though for
00:59:25de la hoya because corte according to virtually all observers has one of the best jabs if not the best
00:59:31and most powerful left jab for his weight in boxing so you're saying that oscar must somehow
00:59:36establish his own jab against the great jabber corte yeah because i don't believe there's no one in
00:59:41that weight division uh that that has a better jab than oscar de la hoya he steps in with it
00:59:45and it's like a stiff right hand when he catches you correctly no one has a better one well that'll
00:59:50be one fascinating angle to watch on november 21 thank you very much george larry merchant rejoins
00:59:55us and larry first before we move to de la hoya corte your comment on chavez's retirement from this
01:00:02fight the defeat at the hands of de la hoya and what it all means to our continuing view of julio
01:00:07cesar chavez as a man and a fighter i think that the fans who love him will continue to love him
01:00:16they'll remember his great fight against edwin rosario to win a lightweight title and later
01:00:21his uh gallant and dramatic comeback over meldrick taylor but ernest hemingway once said that when you
01:00:30fall in love with a fighter you're setting yourself up because at the end of the day he's going to
01:00:35break your heart and i think for an old warrior like him to quit on his stool the way he did he
01:00:42certainly broke a few hearts well a lot of people are in love with oscar de la hoya and now he gets
01:00:47ready for what is by all accounts the toughest fight of his career i certainly think so what do you think
01:00:53i think he fought a terrific fight against chavez because a really good fighter senses what he can
01:01:01do and sometimes it may not be his game plan but that he knew he could take on the older fighter and
01:01:09beat him at his own game he said he would stop him he stopped him it's a perfect fight as far as i'm
01:01:16concerned when he does that he'll have to adapt once the only thing i'll say about that fight right now
01:01:22is this is the first time that he has fought a fighter in which most people will not know in
01:01:32their own hearts or heads or believe that oscar de la hoya will absolutely win the fight this is a
01:01:39very dangerous fight for him would not be a shock at all if he was defeated indeed well we'll turn our
01:01:46attention to that one on november 21 we'll have a final word on what happened here at the vegas hilton
01:01:50a little later let's look ahead to some upcoming later this month check out the entertaining prince
01:01:54nasim hamed the featherweight
