00:00When Ryosuke Nishida graduated from college,
00:22he dabbled with life in the regular workforce,
00:26taking a job at a bread factory in Osaka.
00:30He hoped that his father wouldn't hire him for his company
00:34and take him away from his dreams of becoming a pro boxer,
00:37so he gave himself an ultimatum.
00:40If I lose, I'll quit.
00:42Well, Nishida hasn't lost, and in fact,
00:46became world champion in just his ninth pro fight,
00:49defeating the excellent Manny Rodriguez
00:51to capture the IBF title last year.
00:54He's already spoiled his father's plans of a new employee,
00:58and tonight looks to spoil the plans of an Inoue Nakatani showdown
01:04and become unified world champion in just 11 fights.
01:08And now, making his way to the ring, here is the undefeated three-division world champion
01:28from Saga Mihara, Japan.
01:31Please welcome the WBC Bantamweight champion of the world,

02:08Well, as you just heard from Jimmy Lennon Jr.,
02:22Junto Nakatani has started going by a new nickname,
02:25the Big Bang, an ode to his scintillating power,
02:29but perhaps a subtle nod to his greater ambitions of a new world
02:34in which he is considered pound-for-pound king
02:37and not his countryman, Naoya Inoue.
02:40Nakatani has had a destructive rise up the scale,
02:44capturing titles in three divisions
02:46with a set of dimensions uncommon for each weight class
02:51and a unique set of skills developed in California and Japan
02:55that have made him a cult favorite and now a mainstream star.
03:01Tonight, he's in search of a historic victory
03:05that could set up a generational clash.
03:19Ladies and gentlemen, at this time,
03:21we ask you to please rise for the playing of the national anthem of Japan.

05:51And introducing our referee in charge of the bout,
05:54please welcome from Japan, Yuji Fukuchi.
06:01All right, fans, here we go with the main event
06:04of the evening, an all-Japan undefeated
06:08Southpaw champion versus champion showdown,
06:11scheduled 12 rounds of boxing for the unified WBC
06:15and IBF bantamweight championship of the world.
06:20And now, ladies and gentlemen in attendance
06:23and boxing fans joining us around the world,
06:27live from Tokyo, Japan, it's PRIMETIME!
06:40Introducing you first on my right,
06:43fighting out of the red corner,
06:45entering the ring wearing brown trunks
06:47with white and pink trim, hailing from
06:50Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan.
06:53He weighed in at 53.3 kilograms, 117.5 pounds.
06:59He is undefeated in his career with an outstanding record of 30 wins,
07:04no losses, 23 wins coming by way of knockout.
07:09Tonight making the fourth defense of his current world title.
07:12Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the hard-heating and acclaimed
07:16three-division world champion, the current undefeated reigning and defending
07:21WBC bantamweight champion of the world, introducing Junzo,
07:26Big Bang Makakami!
07:31And his opponent across the ring, ready to go, fighting out of the blue corner,
07:35wearing white trunks with black trim, hailing from Osaka, Japan.
07:41He weighed in at 53.4 kilograms or 117.75 pounds.
07:56He is also undefeated in his campaign to the ring with a record of 10 wins,
08:02no losses, with two wins coming by way of knockout.
08:07Tonight in his third world title appearance, ladies and gentlemen,
08:12please welcome the acclaimed Southpaw world champion,
08:16the undefeated reigning and defending IBF bantamweight champion of the world,
08:22introducing Nisuke Nishina!
08:28Once again, a referee in charge, now to give instructions, Yuji Fukuchi.
08:53And we take a look at the tail of the tape for our main event.
08:57Juko Nakatani not enjoying the type of size advantage that we're used to seeing him with here tonight.
09:04He certainly will have a height and reach advantage, but it's not as extreme as it has been throughout his career
09:10as he rips a couple uppercuts here in the early going.
09:13They are not wasting any time, Nakatani and Nishida.
09:17Yeah, Corey, heading into this fight, I wondered how each of these guys would react to,
09:21for the first time in a long time, not having a marked height and length advantage over their opponent at the bantamweight level.
09:30And it turns out, Nakatani is going to address that by just walking straight forward and doing what he does.
09:36I mean, really everything about this fight is uncommon. It's a little unusual.
09:42Two Japanese fighters facing one another in a unification bout.
09:45We mentioned that's only happened four times.
09:47Two southpaws going at it.
09:50As Nakatani rips another uppercut on the inside and that right hook scored and scored well.
09:55Two tall southpaws who can each fight from a distance but are also comfortable closing the gap and moving forward.
10:04The big difference between them, Corey, is the punching power.
10:07And that is more than an equalizer.
10:14Double uppercut there from Nakatani.
10:20Nishida quite possibly one of the more underrated world champions in boxing today.
10:24Perhaps because of the short career, but nice body shot there from Nishida.
10:28That's what I was about to say, Corey.
10:30That's the same shot that ended his last fight.
10:32That sort of half bolo left uppercut to the body.
10:35And it got Nakatani's attention immediately.
10:38Absolute firefight here in the early going.
10:41The whole tenor of this first round changed after that body shot.
10:47From a guy in Nishida who is not really known as a power puncher.
10:54The greatness of Nishida's offense is in its simplicity.
11:01Yes.
11:02In really how fast to the target it is.
11:03He is tight.
11:04He is compact.
11:07And that was one of the questions in this fight.
11:09Can he get to the body of Nakatani?
11:11And can he do work on the inside without paying a tax that's too hefty?
11:15You see he went back to that punch because there's an opening for it.
11:18There's a lane for it.
11:24And until Nakatani makes the adjustment, he's going to keep throwing it.
11:29And that punch naturally opens up the lane too for his right hook.
11:33For Nishida's right hook.
11:34On the inside there from Nishida.
11:37Lands a chopping left hand.
11:38And they trade shots on the inside.
11:44Nishida doing what no one else has seemed to want to do.
11:47And that's just stand toe to toe with Junto Nakatani.
11:51This is what you want.
11:58A world of 4,600 overnight.
12:00But a hundred of those since we've been on the air.
12:03We referenced him as maybe the most underrated world champion in the sport today.
12:10And part of that of course is all the talent.
12:12The shadow of the talent in the country surrounding him.
12:15Also in the division that he's within.
12:17And then the shadow that looms over this fight.
12:20But you look at that first round Morgan.
12:22And don't print those tickets for Nakatani in a way quite yet.
12:26And we have seen this happen so many times in boxing.
12:30We just saw it happen last week with Caleb Plant losing to Armando Resendiz.
12:34You think you're setting up some semifinals.
12:36And you think you're building up to a final 6 or 9 or 12 months away.
12:40And one of these other fighters has other plans.
12:43As short as Nishida's career has been.
12:45You look at the wins that he's piled up.
12:47Of course the title defense last time out.
12:51The title winning effort against Manny Rodriguez.
12:54Good shot there from Nakatani.
12:56That early career win against Diego Higa.
12:59He's done a lot in 10 fights.
13:01He deserves to be here.
13:02And it looks like he belongs right now.
13:04Diego Higa.
13:05That was 12 rounds in his third pro fight.
13:07If you're looking for an illustration of how quickly this guy has moved.
13:11How quickly he has developed.
13:13And how thoroughly.
13:17This is what Nishida could do.
13:18He could just wedge his way to the inside.
13:21With that tight defense.
13:22The short shots.
13:23And the good body work.
13:25Nakatani trying to pierce through that with those uppercuts.
13:28He's had some success in doing so.
13:30But Nishida could do that very well.
13:34He could catch shots on the elbows and counter right off of them.
13:37A good clubbing shot there from Nakatani.
13:42And I'd expected a lot more of a boxing match.
13:46At least in the early going.
13:47Partly because I believed what Nishida told our man Anson Wainwright from The Ring Magazine.
13:53I think that taking a measured and tactical approach against Nakatani is the way to result in a victory for me.
13:59Big left hand over the top.
14:01That has been a fight ending shot throughout his career for Nakatani.
14:05I was going to say in this.
14:07Aggression is a tactic.
14:09But I would not describe it as measured.
14:16He has decided the best way to be.
14:19The best way to Nakatani is through Nakatani.
14:21Again, which is a tactic most people will not employ for very good reason.
14:25Because he's such a thunderous puncher with that left hand.
14:30Big left hand over the top.
14:32Excellent timing there from Nakatani as he triples up on these uppercuts twice.
14:38You notice what happened when Nakatani landed that overhand left.
14:41Was that Nishida was trying to throw that left uppercut to the body again.
14:46And Nakatani just timed it.
14:48He knew he'd get him leaning.
14:51Nakatani countering Nishida's best shot with his best shot.
14:57There it is again.
14:58Yes, even in the midst of this brawl there's a fascinating tactical back and forth happening.
15:03That's a fun six minutes of boxing as we head back.
15:11As we head back.
15:12As we head back.
15:13As we head back.
15:17We head back.
15:18As we head back.
15:19We right back.
15:20We head back.
15:21Since you head back.
15:23Should we head back?
15:24We head back.
15:25We head back.
15:26We head back.
15:27This is the one who is flying around.
15:31I don't want to get into that one.
15:34I'm going to get into it.
15:38I'm going to get into it.
15:42I'm going to get into it.
15:49I'm going to get into it.
15:52I'm going to get into it.
15:55Second. Now round three.
16:07Round three underway. Warm ovation from the audience.
16:13He is loving this one so far.
16:16That was a big round for Junto Nakatani.
16:19After a fairly even opening round, Nakatani clearly landing the eye-catching shots
16:25at round two, but back comes Nishida with one of his own.
16:28Yeah, and I think one of the things that has opened up for Nishida
16:31because of those left uppercuts to the bye is that he can throw that left hand over the top
16:36as Nakatani's thinking about defending that right side of his ribcage.
16:42Speaking of uppercuts, you might have heard in Nakatani's corner
16:45is Coach Rudy Hernandez telling him, switch it up,
16:48telling him that Nishida is expecting the uppercuts now.
16:51And at a high level like this, Morgan, that's really what you fear the most
16:56is falling into a familiar pattern, especially against a puncher the caliber
17:01on either side of this fight.
17:03Absolutely. That's what we saw in the last fight with Santillan falling into that pattern
17:07of throwing the left hooks, and Nassikawa just letting that left hand go.
17:11So here we have these two.
17:13Each guy sort of expecting the uppercut, each guy trying to figure out
17:16what to do to counter or neutralize it.
17:26There's an intensity, an attention about this fight
17:31that the crowd is really latching onto already.
17:34You can hear the screams when these exchanges start.
17:37Yes.
17:43Nakatani looking for that counter left hand over the top again.
17:46Nishida gets there with one of his own right down the middle.
17:50And another one.
17:55Yeah, and now we're not in the ring, obviously,
17:57but Nakatani is acting and reacting like a guy
18:01who understands that Nishida's punching power
18:04is a lot more effective than his record suggests.
18:10Nakatani just exploding forward with that leaping right hook.
18:14Took a couple of shots prior to that, though.
18:25Counter to the body there from Nakatani.
18:28It's a hard shot to land on Nishida with that super tight guard.
18:32Those elbows go all the way down to the waistband.
18:34Left hand came raining over the top there from Nakatani,
18:43and oh, Nishida.
18:43Big left hand of the body.
18:44Yeah, he felt that body shot.
18:46You could see Nishida wincing,
18:48and now Nakatani climbing the ladder with a couple shots up top
18:53before going back downstairs.
18:56Nishida with a reply right away.
18:58And that left hand of the body was the sort of shot
19:03Nakatani's been looking for.
19:05Maybe not that specific shot,
19:07but the shot that's going to make Nishida think twice
19:11about what he's doing.
19:14Turns out...
19:14...
19:32...
19:36A very interested observer there in Naoya Inouye.
20:01Round four.
20:03Nakatani first off the stools as round four begins of what has been a fantastic title fight so far.
20:12Right, and the other subplot that's developing as we begin the fourth round is
20:17which of these fighters deviates from this furious early pace either by choice or by necessity.
20:25But it's hard to imagine people, two guys fighting this fast,
20:30punching with this frequency and this much power for 12 rounds
20:34without somebody deciding they need a break or without somebody breaking.
20:37I mean we thought that the last time there was a Japanese unification fight
20:41between Kenshiro and Saigo Yuri Akui.
20:44It did not slow down and thus far this one hasn't either.
20:48Well what happened there was Akui went from a furious pace to an even more furious pace
20:56and then Taraji matched it.
20:59So there was a deviation from the pace, it's not the one we expected.
21:02Good inside work here from Nishida as he lands a nice chopping right hook up top.
21:08A big left hand over the top there too.
21:29This is the kind of forehead to forehead shoulder to shoulder fight we weren't sure we were going to see.
21:35You're never certain how two southpaws will match stylistically.
21:40The answer tonight is beautifully and violently.
21:44And speaking of which there is a hematoma developing above the eye of Ryosuke Nishida
21:50that we're going to be wary of as we move forward here.
21:55You hear the chant.
21:59Yeah they're on Nishida's side.
22:00They are on Nishida's side at the moment.
22:03I would have gotten the memo about.
22:08Big left hand there from Nakatani.
22:10That one forces Nishida to take a brief step backwards.
22:14Yeah and that's for the second time tonight Corey.
22:17There's been a big left hand that has caused Nishida to think twice about what he's doing.
22:22Nishida's had a lot of success himself offensively but he's the only one who has shown effects.
22:32Yes.
22:33Of feeling the power so far.
22:34Yeah there's a damage that's starting to accrue.
22:37He also appears between the two of them to be breathing a little bit more heavily.
22:41This is the question that we posed.
22:46How heavy attacks can Nishida afford in these types of exchanges?
22:52Look at the eye of Ryosuke Nishida.
23:06That is a big problem and that left hand right on top of it is not helping matters.
23:11We don't do anything in thisaraus.
23:21Good luck.
23:34That was a great challenge.
23:36Honestly, it was very hard.
23:39It was important to keep this constant and keep it going.
23:42Make it even more important.
23:45In this case, you can do it with the last one.
23:47You can't do it without it.
23:49You can't do it without it.
23:51It goes onkyo.
23:54I can't do it.
23:58You have to fight the boss, because he won't do it.
24:01Round 5 underway as you see the swelling increasing on the eye of Ryosuke Nishida as Junto Nakatani comes right back to the inside with a chopping left hand.
24:31Good shot there from Nishida but back comes Nakatani with a quick combination.
24:38And there's Nishida again starting that sequence that left uppercut to the body again opens up some more of his offense.
24:55Two uppercuts there from Nakatani. This is just an all out slugfest.
25:01Beautiful counter left there from Nakatani.
25:04Nakatani creating a little more distance now.
25:10You see Nishida advancing at a full run when Nakatani tries to create distance.
25:20The distance clearly is not what Nishida wants.
25:25At least not in this phase of the fight.
25:35Looks like Nishida being warned for the use of the head. A little bit overeager perhaps.
25:39Right.
25:40And running towards the inside. Big swing and a miss there from Nakatani.
25:44And clearly Nishida came into this fight thinking that the left hand to the body was what was going to make his offense work.
26:00You've seen him throw it straight as well.
26:05Nakatani tries to turn the corner with a right hook but he got caught with a better one there from Nishida.
26:10Yes.
26:11Good left hands and now just unloading with uppercuts it's Junto Nakatani.
26:30I see Nishida blocking some of those but that eye is nearly closed Morgan.
26:34And again that difference in punching power.
26:39Nishida can try to will these punches away but they're taking an effect.
26:51And we may be taking a look at that eye right.
26:53I mean that's going to look like a Carmen Basilio eye in about five minutes.
26:57But he will pass.
27:10Diagnostic test.
27:12And we are back to action.
27:17Another left hand right on that eye.
27:19Yeah.
27:20Nakatani is not shy about throwing that roundhouse left because it's going to come to Nishida from out of that blind spot.
27:30Just continuing to punish the injury of Riosuke Nishida.
27:34Another one.
27:36A devilish left hand from Nakatani as he strikes a pose at the end of the round.
27:41There it is.
27:53There it is.
27:55Yeah.
27:59The joy of the,
28:00I don't know.
28:30A couple interesting things in the corner there, Morgan, in the Nakatani corner.
28:33Number one, they believe that the ruling was that the eye closure for Nishita is as a result of a headbutt.
28:40That's number one.
28:42But number two, they're telling Nakatani, stop running.
28:45I don't know what their standards are for activity per round,
28:50but apparently it wasn't enough for Rudy Hernandez's liking.
28:55I wouldn't call it running.
28:56As I said, I've seen one guy running that's Nishita.
28:59He's running forward.
29:00But Nakatani has not retreated except when he got hit in the belly with that uppercut.
29:05Look at him now.
29:06He's coming forward.
29:09Nishita takes a knee there.
29:11That obviously an entanglement.
29:13But the body language of Nishita looking a little more haggard here in the sixth round,
29:19and understandably so.
29:24The other thing you saw in between rounds,
29:27the smile on the face of Nakatani,
29:30the difference in body language here.
29:33There's a really frightening level of joy that Nakatani seems to be taking in what's happening right now.
29:39From this combat, exactly.
29:40And look at Nishita right now.
29:42To your point, Corey.
29:45Looking haggard.
29:46Not quite exhausted.
29:49But looking like somebody who understands that he might be running out of answers.
29:53The trade hooks on the inside.
29:59Nakatani just cranking them up, and he cranks the head of Nishita another direction there with that one.
30:05And Nishita still standing in the trenches with one eye trying to trade with one of the most dangerous punchers in the game.
30:14Also, at what point do we credit Nishita's chin?
30:16Because a couple of these right hooks by all rights should have put him down if not out.
30:21And here he is.
30:23Maybe not winning the fight, but still returning fire.
30:25Some of that joy we talked about on the face of Junto Nakatani is probably a little bit of surprise.
30:33Like, hey, someone's willing to stand to do this with me?
30:37Well, as I said in my notes about Nishita, can he take the initiative from Nakatani?
30:44Can he take Nakatani's next punch, best punch?
30:46Can he avoid that punch, and can he do it for 12 rounds?
30:49He's been taking it for five and a half, going on six.
30:55Beautiful right hook there from Nakatani as he dances out.
31:07This corner's not going to like that dancing corner.
31:20See, even in moments like that there, Morgan, Nakatani just establishing that physical dominance.
31:25Just kind of twirling Nishita around a little bit.
31:29His eye is completely closed.
31:31Yes.
31:37Another round in the bank.
31:39Another smile from Nakatani.
31:41Another round in the bank.
31:56Beautiful right.
31:58Flynn's moment.
32:00Another round in the bank.
32:02Another round in the bank.
32:04So, step you up close, punch, punch, step, punch, step.
32:19No need to use strength, no need to punch, okay?
32:23Let's go to the ribs, to the arms.
32:26Huh?
32:27Come down, okay?
32:29Oh, this is going to be waved off, and justifiably so.
32:44The one-eyed Ryosuke Nishida, as brave as they come, but that would have been irresponsible
32:53to continue taking that punishment.
32:56Junto Nakatani, now the unified Bantamweight champion.
33:03The big bang has happened.
33:06And, Corey, we were getting our answer in terms of which fighter would be the first to wilt
33:12under that very aggressive early pace, and it appeared to be Nishida, but to your point,
33:18you cannot look at his eye, you can't see out of that right eye at all, and it's irresponsible
33:23to send him back out into the ring against a puncher as precise and powerful as Junto Nakatani
33:29is with one eye.
33:30He's with one eye.
33:37He was the other guy.
33:39He's the other guy.
33:42He was the other guy.
33:44You can't see.
33:45I believe Hamilton is going to be the king.
33:47As you look at the grotesque swelling on the face,
34:00on the eye of Ryosuke Nishida,
34:02the disappointment there with it.
34:06A credit to Nishida, again,
34:08went into the places with Nakatani
34:11that no one dared to go before.
34:12We're ready to make this one official.
34:14Upon suggestion of the corner,
34:18a referee in charge stops the contest
34:20due to an injury to the fighter.
34:23At the end of round number six,
34:25he is the winner by way of protecting Nishida.
34:29He is now the unbeaten unified WCMI
34:34and the family champion of the world,
34:37Judo Big Bang Nakai!
34:44So, yet another destructive performance
34:53from Junto Nakatani here tonight.
34:57It wasn't without resistance, Morgan,
35:00but you see the face of Ryosuke Nishida.
35:03Those are the hazards with waging that kind of fight
35:07against this kind of fighter.
35:09Yeah, and we all got the memo early on
35:12that Nishida was not content to sit back and play chess,
35:17regardless of what he told the press earlier this week.
35:21He decided that the best way to get to Nakatani
35:23was to try to go through Nakatani,
35:25but you run a different type of risk.
35:29And he not paid for it tonight,
35:31but he paid for it tonight.
35:39Looks like Nishida may be nursing
35:41a shoulder injury at the same time.
