00:07The Hybrid Man
00:09When I was in Shenzhen, China, two weeks ago, I was amazed to see thousands of pedestrians
00:14focused on their phone screens as they walked.
00:16In a country where the most versatile technological tools are available to everyone,
00:21seeing humans immersed in them is nothing new.
00:24If it's not by staring at a phone, the connection to the virtual world
00:27is achieved through augmented reality glasses that, as you walk, show you news,
00:32maps of your route, directions, and even translations of texts that interest you.
00:37It's like having an invisible co-pilot whispering to you,
00:41Turn left, and hey, that store has 30% off green tea.
00:45And if you don't see someone walking with a phone in front of them,
00:47it's likely that their connection is through smart headphones,
00:50which allow you to listen to news, messages, e-books, or music.
00:54These smart headphones are any multitasker's wet dream.
00:58Half the world is listening to podcasts or translating conversations in real time,
01:03while the brain divides its attention between the pavement and the metaverse.
01:07In this common scenario for modern Chinese, seeing them equipped with these technologies
01:12makes us think we're dealing with a hybrid model of human and machine,
01:17moving to the beat of their physical instincts and digital sensors.
01:21This perception becomes more real when, in many establishments,
01:25people interact simultaneously with intelligent robots.
01:29Whether they're waiters serving at your table or machines preparing coffee to your liking,
01:34will they be efficient or are they spinning their trays around?
01:37But of course, that's the point.
01:39It's no longer, look at that cool robot, but oh, another helper.
01:44Normalization is proof that the revolution has arrived.
01:48Another thing that impressed me were simultaneous translators.
01:53These are devices that allow you to speak with people who speak another language,
01:58or, as in China, one of its many dialects.
02:01I bought one of those translators and was able to converse and understand the vendors perfectly.
02:07I had fun hearing my voice in Mandarin and the other person's in Spanish.
02:11That really breaks down barriers.
02:13Imagine, a farmer from Anhui chatting with a tourist from Seville without either of them breaking a sweat.
02:19That used to be science fiction.
02:21Now, it's the talk of the bizarre.
02:24This entire scaffolding of useful technologies, widely used but not exclusively,
02:29demonstrates the extraordinary human-machine symbiosis that sets the tone for a hybrid humanity.
02:35Artificial intelligence applied to tools of daily life, work, or home, is having a rapid impact on our routines.
02:43Machines are beginning to take over tasks we previously performed mentally or manually,
02:48creating a new paradigm for life.
02:51We now function with them like a mental prosthesis.
02:53We are redesigning what it means to be human.
02:58Where does our brain end and the algorithm begin?
03:01Will we be more creative if machines do the routine, or will we become cerebrally lazy?
03:06This isn't the future.
03:08It's the accelerated present.
03:09And Shenzhen is just the appetizer.
03:12What a time to be alive and semi-robotized.
