Trump says he hasn't decided on Russia sanctions bill

US President Donald Trump says on June 6, 2025 that he hasn't decided whether to deploy sanctions against Russia that are being considered by the US Senate. The Senate is weighing a bill that will impose stiff sanctions on Russia - and secondary sanctions on countries that trade with Russia - over its war in Ukraine. Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he would use it 'if necessary.' Asked about Russia's most recent attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in the early hours of June 6 that killed at least six people, Trump said Ukraine 'gave Putin a reason to go and bomb the hell out of them.' The attacks followed a warning from Russian President Vladimir Putin, conveyed via Trump, that the Kremlin would hit back after Ukrainian drones destroyed several strategic bomber aircraft in attacks deep inside Russia.

00:00Well, I know the bill. I've studied the bill. We're going to see. I mean, if we're, if I think there's, if I think Russia will not be making a deal or stopping the budget, five and six, even, I've been saying five and six, and now it's more, a thousand a week soldiers being killed and people being killed, not just soldiers, people being killed, but largely soldiers being killed.
00:26Yeah, use it if it's necessary. And they've really given me that option.
00:31Are you trying to get the Senate to water it down, though?
00:34No, no, I haven't, I haven't spoken to them about it. They have a bill that's going to be up to me. It's my option. They've made it that way. And it would save a lot of time if that happens. So I'm okay with it. I haven't decided to use it. It's a very, it's a very strong bill.
00:48Mr. President, you gave a lot of us. Did that change your view at all of what's the risk of the cards he has?
00:54Well, they gave, they gave Putin a reason to go in and bob the hell out of him last night. That's something I didn't like about it. When I saw it, I said, here we go. Now it's going to be a strike. You know, I didn't.
01:04Do you have a breakdown with Russia in Ukraine? Are you worried that that could have happened?
01:08I don't, I hope not. I hope not. I think it's a war that would have never happened. If I'm a president, that wouldn't have happened. I certainly hope not.
01:18There you go.
01:48You
