Transcript
00:00All right. You know, one of the bigger names in boxing these days is Eddie Hearn, who runs
00:11Matchroom Sports and promotes all over the world, especially a big event recently at
00:18Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Well, he's my new guest on Frank Walks, and of course,
00:25Frank Walks are hydrated, as always, by body armor. You know, body armor has nothing artificial,
00:31no dyes, don't have to worry about these new restrictions, because it's always been all
00:35natural. It's always been real. You see, that's why you should choose better. Choose body armor.
00:41Frank Walks, Frank Walks, it's time for Frank Walks.
00:51Whoa. I mean, I almost got taken out by Amazon.
01:02They're rude around here, Frank, aren't they? I almost got taken out by Amazon.
01:07That's good for the episode, though.
01:09Yeah, Amazon Prime. They'll be shipping me my wheelchair. And then I'll be calling Jeff
01:16Bezos and saying, how many shares are you going to give me, Jeff? Hopefully, I get enough
01:25shares that I can buy the Dolphins.
01:26Yeah.
01:29All right, Eddie.
01:31Yeah.
01:31Now, what's been going on in boxing? Now, you've been voting some big events lately.
01:36Yeah, boxing's going crazy, Frank, to be honest with you. Like, there's always been this kind
01:41of debate about boxing and MMA. Like, what's hot, what's not, you know? And I think with
01:49the Saudis coming in, this weekend, we're closing down Times Square for a big event. And last
01:55weekend, we had 65,000 people at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. You're one of your favourite
02:02stadiums, I think, Frank. You know? Won't go there, will we?
02:06Tottenham.
02:07Yeah. So, I think boxing's hot. Every sport is cyclical, right? You know, like...
02:11Yeah.
02:12Some sports come and go. But right now, boxing's hotter than it's ever been.
02:18I mean, you have one of the biggest names in the... Anthony Joshua.
02:24Correct, yeah. The big heavyweight. I mean, he's filled out Wembley Stadium a couple of times.
02:29Tottenham Stadium himself. But, you know, I think in every market, you've got the big
02:35names. And like I said, like, I feel like MMA had their time. UFC's still huge. But right
02:42now, boxing seems to be ruling the narrative, ruling the conversation, the digital airwaves.
02:48And we're seeing the best fight the best. And I think any sports fan wants to see that,
02:51you know?
02:53Now, boxing had its difficulties over the last few years, but it seems like it is making
02:57a comeback. Who are the big stars today?
03:01I mean, Canelo Alvarez over here in America, right? The big Mexican undisputed champion.
03:06He's right up there. Always does big numbers. Ryan Garcia coming through. Devin Haney, Javonta
03:13Davis, Jaron Boots Ennis, Shakur Stevenson. You've got some great fighters in America right
03:19now. In the UK, you've got the two big guys, Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. They're the big
03:26names. But what we're seeing is we're seeing the best fighting the best at the moment.
03:30So you saw Alexander Usyk fight Tyson Fury for the undisputed heavyweight world championship.
03:36Bivol for better beer for the undisputed light heavyweight championship. I think the fans just
03:40want to know who the best is, you know, in the divisions, because it is a little bit difficult
03:45to understand boxing. There's a lot of belts.
03:47Yeah, the problem is the alphabet soup. I think if there is unification, I think the
03:54sport will have a bigger... The champions have got to fight the champions.
03:57Yeah. And you see that doesn't happen enough.
04:00I agree.
04:01The alphabet soups have always been a major problem.
04:05Yeah.
04:09So, I saw that you had a big event one time. Matchroom against Queensbury.
04:16Yeah. Do we have to talk about this one, Frank?
04:20Because, you know, it didn't go that well for us.
04:24We lost 5-0.
04:25Oh, jeez.
04:25It was like, what it was, was there's a guy in England called Frank Warren, right?
04:30Yeah.
04:30He's another promoter. And my father, who is a Hall of Fame promoter, when he was young,
04:37him and Frank Warren were like this, right? All of a sudden, I come along. Frank Warren's still
04:43here. He's in his 70s. And I never spoke to Frank Warren for 15 years when I was promoting. And all
04:50of a sudden, Turkey had a shake from Saudi Arabia come in and he was like, right, you two. I want you
04:54two to start working together. But better than that, I want you to do a 5v5 where your five
05:01fight his five. And I was like, I'm all over that, you know? And then we did it and we lost 5-0.
05:09Oh, no.
05:10It was quite humiliating, Frank, to be honest with you.
05:11Sorry.
05:12Do you know what I mean?
05:13Sorry to bring up a painful memory.
05:14Yeah, thanks, mate. I really appreciate that.
05:15Now, what big boxing events do you have coming up besides the Times Square, which will be,
05:23uh, we're just going to, this is going to air in a couple of weeks.
05:26Yeah.
05:26So, um, that's going to be in the past by the time this airs.
05:30Yeah.
05:30So, what events do you have coming this summer?
05:32So, this summer, we've got, we're just coming off the back of Jerome Boots Ennis,
05:37unifying. We've got Jesse Bam Rodriguez, unifying the division. We've also got July 12th,
05:44back in New York. I'll give you a little bit of a, an exclusive, Frank. At the moment,
05:49we're doing some of these Ring Magazine events with Saudi Arabia.
05:52Yep.
05:53And you're right, this episode will be viewed, will be aired after the Times Square event.
05:57We're actually closing down Times Square for this fight. It's crazy, right? They've got this vision,
06:03they want to hold boxing events in quite obscure places.
06:07I like that.
06:08So, they want to do one on Alcatraz Island.
06:10Oh.
06:11Right? A fight.
06:12That sounds...
06:13And they want the fighters to come out, like, cuffed, you know, like in their,
06:16in their prison, prisoner outfit and stuff like that.
06:18Oh.
06:19So, the next one, July 12th, as an exclusive, will be in Central Park.
06:25Oh.
06:26Right? So, they're going to close down Central Park,
06:29and they're going to do the fights in Central Park.
06:31That, that sounds like a fantastic event to see.
06:32It's mad, like no fans. This is a crazy thing.
06:35So, it's just invite only. But I think for a TV spectacle, people can really,
06:39you know, are really enticed to tune in, you know?
06:43And actually, I'll tell you another thing they did at our show on Saturday.
06:47What do you think of this, Frank?
06:48Right?
06:49So, they had no ring card girls, right?
06:54You know the girls who put this all right?
06:57What they had instead was lookalikes.
07:01Right? So, all of a sudden, they come out for the first run.
07:04Ed Sheeran gets in the ring with a guitar and a sign saying round two and goes around you.
07:11And everyone's going, fuck me, it's Ed Sheeran.
07:13Ed Sheeran's the new ring card girl.
07:15They had Hannibal Lecter.
07:16They had Ed Sheeran. They had David Beckham.
07:20That's creative.
07:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:22I mean, at first, everyone was like, what is going on here?
07:25But then all of a sudden, everyone's talking about it.
07:27You know, it's going viral.
07:28Like, they're pretty, these guys are smart people.
07:30You gotta find, the next time you're in London, you gotta find a lookalike of the king.
07:34Yeah, I know. Charles.
07:36Get King Charles in there.
07:37Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:39Get Prince William in there.
07:42Exactly.
07:42Oh, that's, I like, you know, I like that.
07:46That's sudden inventive, creative.
07:49Now, I also see that you run darts.
07:52Yeah.
07:53And New York, America's not that big for darts, but when they have the events, they're electric.
08:01I was at the darts event a couple of years ago at the Hulu Theater at Masters Square Garden.
08:08And that's coming up again at the end of June.
08:10Yeah.
08:11So, I've got to tell you, darts is massive, right?
08:16In the UK right now, darts dwarfs boxing.
08:20Right?
08:20We are selling out every arena in the UK.
08:24The viewing figures are through the roof.
08:27And it's like, I mean, for you guys at Barstool, it's like the perfect event.
08:32So, that event in June, which is coming up at Madison Square Garden, which will be completely sold out for three days.
08:38It's like, we call it sports biggest party.
08:42It's like a giant pub, right?
08:45And you've got all these guys now that are superstars.
08:47You've got like Luke Littler, who's this young kid.
08:50He's just turned 18.
08:52He's winning everything.
08:53So, darts has become really fashionable with the younger generation.
08:57But it's like working class heroes who, you know, they've all come from like normal jobs.
09:03Do you know what I mean?
09:04So, they're playing darts in a pub.
09:07And it might be this guy, he was like a scaffolder.
09:10He was a carpenter.
09:12He worked in a metal factory.
09:14And all of a sudden, they're walking out in front of 20,000 people like this.
09:17And the public love them, because they're just normal people.
09:21But they're making millions of dollars.
09:23What's that?
09:23Darts there, darts.
09:25Oh, yeah.
09:25Well, I know bar school goes crazy for the darts.
09:28Yeah.
09:28Everyone gets to go there.
09:30It's almost like, let's cut this way.
09:35It's almost like an event.
09:36Yes, I know a couple of years ago, I went there.
09:39And it's like a party when you had the breaks.
09:42It's everyone's going nuts.
09:45I'd never seen anything like that.
09:47But you know what we need, Frank?
09:49And I think you could be the man to help us with this, right?
09:54We need to unearth the new darts superstar.
10:03The new darts superstar.
10:04The new US darts superstar, right?
10:07Because right now, all these people in America are watching darts.
10:11But they're watching Brits.
10:13Yeah.
10:13They're watching Germans.
10:14They're watching Australians.
10:15So how do we find the American superstar?
10:21Well, we've got to set up some dartboards.
10:23We've got to maybe have America's competition for Americans just to come open competition.
10:30Open season, right?
10:33Yeah.
10:33What we have to do, and I think we should do it with Barstool.
10:36And I think you should be a consultant to the event, Frank, because I think we need you.
10:39I mean, guys just shouting your name out like you're Kim Kardashian, to be honest with you,
10:44walking these streets, right?
10:45But what we need to do is we need to do a Barstool darts tournament to unearth the new darting superstar of New York and America.
10:58I mean, I think that's a great idea.
11:00I mean, if we get Big Cat and Dave involved, I mean, it looks like Rough and Rowdy is pretty much, it doesn't look like there's going to be another Rough and Rowdy.
11:14We need something else.
11:16So something new, it's created you.
11:18Let's speak to Big Cat, Big Cat, Frank the Tank, Eddie Hearn, the dream team to unearth the new darting superstar of America.
11:25And find America's dart champion to take on the world, to bring darts to America.
11:33Exactly.
11:34To take darts from the British pubs, and we should do it on the 4th of July so he can take darts, take over darts.
11:45More passion, Frank.
11:46Come on.
11:47Yes.
11:48Yes, indeed.
11:48Tell them.
11:49Like George Washington.
11:51Yes.
11:51We need someone to lead the dart revolution in America.
11:56Next year is going to be 250 years since the Declaration of Independence.
12:00We in America need to find a dart champion to take over the world.
12:06America, can you hear us?
12:09We're on this, Frank.
12:10By the way, that is going to go viral in darts.
12:16I can't tell you.
12:17The darts fans are going to go crazy for that.
12:19You know, I haven't told many darts a couple of months ago.
12:24I was at the Chicago office.
12:26I threw one dart and I went and hit another dart.
12:29Well, that's pretty good.
12:31I mean, that's one a million shy.
12:34I just wish it was on tape.
12:38But thanks, and thanks, Eddie.
12:42And I hope that you have a lot of success this year.
12:44And sadly, that one that didn't work out.
12:49But I know you have many great events coming up.
12:52The darts is going to be huge again.
12:55And hopefully, we can find that dart champion and make darts the next big sport.
13:02Going to get your hat and make darts great again.
13:05Yes.
13:05So what day is darts there?
13:07Dart day is at the end of June.
13:08So are we going?
13:11Probably.
13:12We'll try to get there.
13:12It's at Madison Square Garden.
13:13You're all invited.
13:15We call it the US Open.
13:17You guys call it, we call it the US Championship.
13:20You guys call it dart day.
13:22It's interesting, you know?
13:23Yeah, it's like that was last weekend in June.
13:27Madison Square Garden.
13:29Let's actually get the date of that.
13:30Because I just want to get it right.
13:31Because I should know it, but.
13:37Like June 27th, June 28th?
13:39I think it's earlier than that.
13:40Oh, it is?
13:45Here we go.
13:47Oh, you're right.
13:55Frank knows it better than me.
13:57June 27th, June 28th, Madison Square Garden.
14:01We call it the US Masters.
14:02You call it dart day.
14:04Dart day.
14:05Be there or be square.
14:06We're going to hit the target on dart day.
14:09Eddie Hearn's knocking him out in the ring.
14:11Thanks again for joining me.
14:21Woo!
14:22Woo!
