First down! Yes, that's right. I am here with Rashad White, you know, Tampa Bay
00:07
Buccaneers running back, who's got a knack for getting these first downs.
00:12
He's good at it, one of the best third down backs in the league and one of the best
00:15
blocking backs in the league. Let's go for a walk.
00:20
Frank Walsh, Frank Walsh, it's time for Frank Walsh.
00:30
Now, you have a reputation of being one of the best blocking running backs in the league.
00:41
Yeah. And this comes from that game in Germany,
00:45
when you just laid out that poor Seahawk defender.
00:50
Yeah. What? Seahawks.
00:55
Well, he's also done things against the Saints, too. He's caught touchdown passes,
01:00
but the one in Germany was the Seahawks. Yeah.
01:04
What does it feel like just to, like, this defender's about to make a play,
01:09
and then you just, like, knock him out of the way, and all of a sudden,
01:12
your team makes a big score, or a first down.
01:17
It was huge, man, especially for me being a rookie that year. It was amazing.
01:23
I will never forget that moment, just, you know, getting the play call and going through,
01:28
and the guy was just in the way. And he was a good safety at the time.
01:32
I remember we was talking about all week, and he's still good, though,
01:35
at the Quandary Digs, and, you know, just remember talking about him all week
01:39
and stuff like that, and, you know, I was trying to do anything I can to help the team win
01:44
and do my job, and he was just kind of in the way.
01:47
And it just took over me, like, kind of get out the way.
01:50
Now, you've worked hard to get to where you're at.
01:53
I see that you started in junior colleges and went to, before finally getting a shot at Arizona State.
02:00
Yeah.
02:01
So what was that journey like to get from small schools over here to Arizona State
02:08
to be drafted in the second round?
02:11
Man, it was long, you know.
02:14
It was some tough nights, great memories, great moments.
02:19
Going out in California, I'd never been there in my life,
02:21
and I remember I was going home just telling my mom that I was leaving.
02:25
I'm from Kansas City, Missouri, originally.
02:27
Never been to California in my life.
02:28
I'm a 17-, 18-year-old just telling my mom.
02:30
I had a scholarship division, too, at the time, and I was just going home telling her I'm leaving.
02:35
And, you know, sometimes your parents just the look on their face,
02:39
and she had this crazy look on her face like, you know, like, what are you talking about?
02:43
And I just told her, and I was big on taking risks.
02:46
So just going through that journey, man, it was tough.
02:49
It was hard.
02:50
It was sleepless nights.
02:52
But I had great memories.
02:53
I had great teammates, made great friends that, you know, we still talk to this day,
02:58
and they still come out and see me, and they get to see me at the highest level.
03:01
So that means a lot, man.
03:04
And this journey got you to the NFL where you're playing with the GOAT, Tom Brady.
03:12
Yeah.
03:13
I mean, you're catching passes from Tom Brady.
03:14
You're getting the ball from Tom Brady.
03:17
What was it like to play with Tom Brady?
03:19
He's this icon of icons.
03:22
Well, it was great, especially like how I grew up.
03:25
I've always been a natural, great pass catcher.
03:27
I got three older brothers, so we always just tossed the pigskin around a little bit
03:31
and get them out outside.
03:33
And I always just have a football with me, just throwing it up in the air.
03:36
So going into that situation, I knew Tom was great at, you know, giving his backs the ball
03:44
and, you know, going through his reads real fast and checking it down.
03:48
Yeah, he's always going back to Kevin Falk.
03:51
He's always found ways to make his running backs just excel.
03:56
Yeah.
03:57
Yeah, so, I mean, you knew that.
03:59
So you knew he was going to get the ball, and I knew I was going to get the ball in space.
04:02
I knew I was coming in, Chris Godwin.
04:04
I mean, we have Mike, and we got Mike, Chris Godwin, Julio.
04:07
I mean, we had a loaded roster of, like, receivers, like, talented-wise
04:11
and guys that put a lot of work in this league.
04:13
So I knew if they played, you know, everybody dropped back, I knew I would get the ball a lot.
04:18
It would be a lot of space.
04:19
So, you know, I was just trying to make plays.
04:21
And when my number was called, my name was called, and I came in the league.
04:24
Obviously, I had Leonard Frenette and stuff in my room and things like that.
04:27
And Giovanni Bernard.
04:29
Yes, yes.
04:30
Yeah, got to give Giovanni some credit, man.
04:32
I still talk to him to this day, man.
04:34
He guides me still to this day.
04:36
And, you know, you've had nothing but success so far.
04:39
You've been in the playoffs every season.
04:41
You've won the – in fact, the NFC South has gone through Tampa every year.
04:47
Yeah, and when I was coming in, it was crazy because I would always just, like,
04:52
kind of annoy Mike and pick their brain and Levante and stuff like that.
04:56
And, you know, he was always – Mike was always trying to tell me to cherish this,
04:59
things like that.
05:00
He said he played, like, what, I think his first, what, seven or so plus
05:04
or however many years.
05:06
It was probably more than that.
05:07
And he never been to the playoffs.
05:09
And, you know, it was some dark moments and things like that.
05:12
So, he always told me, like, cherish this and stuff like that.
05:15
So, I've been blessed, man.
05:16
I've been fortunate.
05:17
I came into a great situation.
05:19
And, yeah, I'm grateful.
05:21
Now, Tampa's got – basically your entire team is going to be coming back next year.
05:26
Right.
05:27
You're going to have a new offensive coordinator.
05:29
Right.
05:30
Cone got a chance in Jacksonville.
05:33
Yeah.
05:34
You got this guy Fritz.
05:35
Yeah.
05:36
Yeah.
05:37
We got Grizzard.
05:38
Grizzard.
05:39
Grizzard.
05:40
We got Grizz.
05:41
Grizz.
05:42
And we love Grizz.
05:43
Obviously, he was our passing game coordinator last year,
05:45
drew up a lot of good plays for us, helped us out, you know,
05:50
with a lot of different things that we did,
05:52
a lot of different looks that we threw at teams.
05:54
And we still got the whole staff coming back.
05:58
So, it should be good.
05:59
Like you said, we got the same team, so we're going to be really good.
06:01
And Baker Mayfield has found a nice groove in it.
06:03
Yeah.
06:04
In Tampa.
06:05
Yep.
06:06
Now, when you're playing, you're one of these running backs that is patient,
06:11
that waits to hit the hole.
06:12
Right.
06:13
What goes into your style of running?
06:16
Man, I really can't tell you.
06:18
I've just been running the ball like that my whole life, you know,
06:21
and it's a different type of style of running the ball.
06:24
And that's the thing sometimes.
06:26
You know, some people like it and some people don't.
06:29
Think about me, I just try to utilize my vision as much as I can.
06:34
Sometimes that requires patience.
06:36
Sometimes that doesn't.
06:38
And for me, just being a taller, being a bigger back,
06:41
I try to make sure I can be able to slither,
06:44
and sometimes you got to get skinny.
06:46
So, I'll say that's the biggest thing, man.
06:48
When it comes to me, of course, I love plays like power, stuff like that.
06:51
I like guys pulling in front of me.
06:53
That's the way I can utilize my patience more.
06:55
And then just understanding, like, some plays requires me to use my patience
06:59
and be me, and some plays require me as the league.
07:01
So, we got to go.
07:02
I mean, I think the key to success for any good offense is the offensive line.
07:08
Right.
07:09
I mean, those guys, and you think about the offensive linemen,
07:13
you only hear their name when they fuck up, when they don't make a play.
07:17
Don't make a play.
07:18
But you see the touchdowns.
07:20
You see the scores.
07:21
Yeah.
07:22
But they don't get the respect they deserve, the offensive line.
07:26
Right.
07:27
And that's a great part about it right now.
07:30
Like, you know, offensive linemen, they're getting paid well,
07:32
and that's some of the credit that goes to the work they put in.
07:36
And I would say, too, just, yeah, I was listening to Deion Dawkins
07:39
and stuff like that, his press conference,
07:41
and him talking about offensive linemen need an award
07:43
and, you know, just being a running back and just being –
07:46
there needs to be an award for the offensive line.
07:48
Yeah, for sure.
07:49
I felt that for a long time.
07:50
For sure.
07:51
For sure.
07:52
And it needs to be some recognition for them guys.
07:54
And besides, like, you know, just pay.
07:57
It needs to be some accolades for them guys.
07:59
And it needs to be some respect.
08:01
So, I'm with you on that.
08:02
And our offensive line has come a long way.
08:04
Guys have put in a lot of work.
08:06
And, you know, we have got better.
08:08
We have gotten better over the years.
08:10
And, yeah, like you said, we're looking real good, man.
08:12
We got a great running game.
08:13
We got a great running back room.
08:15
We're going to be straight.
08:16
Well, do you have any charities that you work on
08:19
or anything like that you want to talk about?
08:22
I don't really – I mean, I partner with a lot of different things
08:26
like Boys and Girls Club of Tampa Bay.
08:28
Of course, you're wearing the Psycho Bunny jacket.
08:30
Yeah, yeah.
08:31
So, you know, I mess with Psycho Bunny.
08:32
Me and Psycho Bunny do our thing.
08:33
And so shout-out to Psycho Bunny for, you know, showing me love
08:36
and hooking me up with the freshest and nice gear.
08:39
I like to stay fresh.
08:40
That's just who I am.
08:41
I'm a swaggy dude.
08:42
And I would say shout-out to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
08:44
I grew up a part of the program, and I like to do things with them.
08:47
One more thing.
08:48
I got a camp coming up.
08:49
I'm going to actually do it in – I got a camp in Tampa.
08:52
I'm going to have the details soon.
08:53
But I also got a football camp in Orlando too.
08:56
Oh, nice.
08:57
Because they don't got a football team.
08:58
So I want to go out there and show love.
08:59
That's good.
09:00
These camps are how you get the next generation.
09:01
Right.
09:02
And I want to go out there and show love.
09:03
And how you build your fan base too, I've always felt.
09:05
Yep.
09:06
You know, we got a big Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan that works with us.
09:09
Yeah.
09:10
Steven Shea.
09:11
And a lot of times we're sitting around watching the games.
09:13
And every time the Buccaneers get a first down, he just does this.
09:20
And it drives everyone nuts.
09:25
Yeah, Steven.
09:26
Oh, you want to do this one, Steven, just once?
09:28
When I get a first down?
09:29
Yeah.
09:30
Do one of these.
09:31
Yeah, I'll get it right.
09:33
That's how you do it right there?
09:35
Yes, like that.
09:36
Yeah, I'll get it right when I do a first down for sure.
09:39
You know, I actually live in a town called Belleville.
09:42
Okay.
09:43
And we just changed our logo.
09:44
But we were the Belleville Buccaneers in New Jersey.
09:47
Yep.
09:48
And they changed the logo so they got a new, more fierce looking pirate.
09:53
But we had the retro Buccaneers logo only blue and yellow.
09:56
Okay.
09:57
In the town I live in, Belleville, New Jersey.
09:59
Okay.
10:00
And of course, the retro uniform comes out a couple times a year.
10:02
Yep.
10:03
Everyone loves the creamsicles.
10:04
Right.
10:05
I mean, they're just classic.
10:06
For sure, for sure.
10:07
And we love them too.
10:08
We got to get a dub in them this year.
10:11
But we ain't got a dub in them the past two years we've won.
10:14
So we got to win in them this year for sure.
10:16
But, yeah, we love them.
10:18
I think they're swaggy.
10:20
We love what they have done.
10:21
Like, you know, obviously with Uncle Tom.
10:24
The old school.
10:25
Yes.
10:26
The old school.
10:27
I always love the old school.
10:28
Yeah.
10:29
You always got to pay homage for sure.
10:30
All right.
10:31
Well, thank you for joining us.
10:32
No problem, man.
10:33
It was a good time.
10:34
And good luck this season.
10:35
No problem.
10:37
And hey, hey, Tampa Bay.
10:38
Yeah.
10:39
You know what we do.
10:40
First down.
