Severance's production designer, Jeremy Hindle, says the show explores the issues with America's work-life balance.

00:00It was interesting because I wanted the show to be timeless.
00:04I didn't want anyone to really know where it was and when it was.
00:08Especially underground, you know, in MDR, the main set,
00:12we wanted the technology to really be quite confusing.
00:16It's all functional, but if any was to escape to the outside world
00:20and could describe it, it would make no sense.
00:22Like, my son doesn't know what a trackball is.
00:24My daughter, they don't know what this tech is.
00:26But now it's kind of funny, now they're all fascinated,
00:28and now they all want these damn keyboards.
00:30And it's kind of fun.
00:32It was also to make it really playful.
00:36There was a movie Playtime that I loved from the 60s
00:38and I kind of threw that at Ben.
00:40Like, what if we just make the show playful
00:42along with this really interesting story that Dan wrote,
00:46which is really about the work-life balance,
00:48which is a huge problem right now.
00:50Like, how do you go to work and go home?
00:52And because of this damn iPhone we all have, or technology,
00:56it's 24 hours a day.
00:57It was like, how do we make this fun
00:59to also talk about something that's really important?
